Paperback. Condizione: Good. Explores the forgotten remnants of California's abandoned towns and landmarks, revealing the stories of dreams once built in the unforgiving desert. The California desert stands as a testament to the ever-changing interplay between human ambition and the forces of nature. In the early pioneer days, towns would quickly spring up like mirages in the sand as people moved west in search of a more fortunate life. Yet, as quickly as these towns emerged, they faded into obscurity, leaving behind echoes of their former glory. The unforgiving heat and unreliable water sources of the California desert took a toll that many were unprepared for. The very essence of desert life that had attracted people to this challenging terrain became the force that pushed them away. This book takes a journey through the remnants of this exodus, uncovering the abandoned places of the California desert. You will learn the stories of forgotten dreams as we explore decayed motels, abandoned waterparks, the impossible railroad, and a mining town with over 400 abandoned structures, which has been closed to the public for the last forty years. This is the story of Deserted Dreams, a look into California's Abandoned Oasis.…

Paperback. Condizione: Fair. Prince Alfred, who was created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866 and became Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in 1893, was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A patron of the arts, pioneer philatelist and amateur violinist, he joined the Royal Navy as a boy and rose to become Admiral of the Fleet. At the age of 18 he was elected King of Greece by overwhelming popular vote in a plebiscite, although political agreements between the Great Powers of Europe prevented him from accepting the vacant crown. The most widely travelled member of his family, he had visited all five continents by the age of 27, and while on a tour of Australia in 1868 he narrowly escaped assassination at the hands of a Fenian sympathiser. Married to Grand Duchess Marie of Russia, the only surviving daughter of Tsar Alexander II, at one stage he had to face the possibility that he might be required to fight on behalf of the British empire against that of his father-in-law. His last years were overshadowed by marital difficulties, alcoholism and ill-health, and the suicide of his only son and heir.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This book contains almost 200 photos taken from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s by the General Electric Company. Over these decades GE scientists continually experimented to invent and modify street lights that could transform urban downtowns, rural roads, and parks into daylight use. The images in this book show more than half of America lighting up for the first time liberating the country from common darkness and allowing entertainment, work, and pleasure to become a 24 hour pursuit. …

Paperback. Condizione: Good. This family saga of westward migration is told through the voices of people who lived 100 years ago by means of letters, diaries, oral history and photographs. It includes a memoir of the author's improbable discoveries as he found the stories of the grandfather he never knew. The Lawtons' first ancestor arrived in Massachusetts in 1635. Its succeeding generations followed forest cutting to the west, across the northern states, until one branch of the family arrived in frontier Spokane in 1890. Will and Irene Lawton followed a string of settlers from Wisconsin, where the pine forests were playing out after a quarter century of logging. They established homes and businesses in Spokane, then left in 1906 and settled a few miles west in the scablands of the Columbia Plateau, where they bought land, took up a homestead, and commenced farming and storekeeping. The dream worked until misfortune and flawed assumptions eventually led to the loss of all they had built. The family had been multi-generational and closely knit. But by 1920 the family had scattered because of untimely deaths and the collapse of homesteading. As a fatherless boy, Walter Lawton, Will's son, spent years in Idaho's mountains herding sheep to get by.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. Weak maritime nations have always sought to augment the strength of their coastal defenses and navies by the use of "diabolical" contrivances for destroying an invader's ships. The history of the adoption of the torpedo as a recognized implement of warfare is not unlike that of gunpowder or of exploding shells. Each in its turn was met by the cry, "Inhuman, barbarous, unchivalrous." During the American Civil War, the Confederate Navy employed submerged mines, called torpedoes, and explosive charges mounted on a long pole referred to as the "spar torpedo" which was bumped into the hull of an enemy vessel exploding on contact. These weapons enjoyed great success during the conflict. In July 1869, the Secretary of the Navy announced the establishment of the Naval Torpedo Station on Goat Island in the harbor of Newport, Rhode Island, for development of a more sophisticated and deadlier self-propelled torpedo. From its founding until the end of the Second World War, the Naval Torpedo Station has been the Navy's principal center for the design of torpedoes. Newport continues as the home of the U.S. Navy's most important laboratory for research and development of modern weapons' systems.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The Christmas Tree Shops, founded in 1970, became a beloved New England icon for unique bargains. The Christmas Tree Shops was an icon of New England, with stores that offered a diverse assortment of merchandise from seasonal decorations, home decor, housewares, food and giftware, and just about everything else. Founded in 1970 by Chuck and Doreen Bilezikian, they opened their first shop on Route 6A at Willow Street in Yarmouth Port in a former grocery store. Over the next three decades, twenty-three stores were opened that not only had distinctive architecture but also became a destination for the public and offered items you never thought you needed before stepping through the door.Despite the seasonal name, the Bilezikians sold unique, one-of-a-kind quality merchandise at bargain prices from closeouts and overruns, as well as small batches of baskets made in Eastern Europe, glass Christmas ornaments from Poland, and a plethora of intriguing merchandise. One customer described the stores as "like walking into a closet full of surprise treasures" and combined with great prices, they would coin their familiar catch phrase "Don't You Just Love a Bargain?" Employees radiated a warm, positive attitude and were valued for their part in making the Christmas Tree Shops not just a special place to shop but a great success. As Chuck and Doreen Bilezikian once said, "Together we grew a successful company and created many memories." Indeed, there are many who fondly recall the thrill of finding a bargain at these iconic stores.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. Kaiser Friedrich III and his consort Victoria, Princess Royal of Great Britain, had six children who lived to maturity, the eldest being Kaiser Wilhelm II. The three younger sisters, Victoria, Sophie and Margaret, were particularly supportive of their mother during her widowhood and remained close throughout their lives. Like their parents, they would know much sorrow as adults. Victoria's romance with Alexander of Battenberg, Prince of Bulgaria, was thwarted by Bismarck for political reasons and she married twice, firstly to a minor German prince and secondly to a young Russian adventurer who left her to die in poverty. Sophie married the future King Constantine of Greece, whose ill-starred reign saw them forced to leave their throne not once but twice, both dying in exile. Margaret married a prince of Hesse-Cassel, both became members of the Nazi party, and she lived to see her family and house become victims of theft on a major scale at the hands of occupying forces at the end of the Second World War. Using previously unpublished sources, this is the first biography to tell the lives of all three princesses.…
