Two outstanding figures in the field of psychoanalysis join hands to explore in depth all of Freud's important relationships with women~mother, sisters, nurse, wife, sister~in~law, daughters, professional associates, and patients. What transpired between Freud and his mother that shaped his feelings toward women? What role did his nurse play in his early life? What was the effect on him of growing up with five younger sisters? Was Freud's relationship with his wife, Martha, unambivalent, as Ernest Jones, Freud's biographer, claims? Is it true that Freud was not a very concerned parent? What did Freud really feel towards female patients, and how did he behave with them? What were his relationships with the women psychoanalysts and psychiatrists he trained? Questions such as these are answered for the first time in this fascinating book. We see here how Freud both idealized women and feared them, loved them and hated them. Freud's own sexual inhibitions become clear, including his fear of "the woman" in his own psyche. Freud contributed much to the emotional and sexual emancipation of women, but in many areas his inner conflicts prevented him at times from setting them completely free. This book shows to what degree he was able to help his female colleagues and his women patients. Finally, it offers a dispassionate appraisal of what his discoveries contribute to an understanding of women in our own time. The book includes a selection of photographs. …
