India's capacity to succeed in emerging and sustaining herself as a significant global player is, however, crucially dependent on the evolving dynamics within the spheres of its neighbourhood and India's capacity to make this rise acceptable and enthusiastic. In this connection, it is important to note that the concept of 'region' or 'neighbourhood' has been enhanced to bypass geographical divisions and now includes not only South Asia but also India's extended neighbourhood consisting of West Asia, Central Asia along with Southeast and East Asia. India's neighbourhood policy, launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014, not only undertook a fresh initiative towards India's immediate neighbourhood in South Asia but also recalibrated itself and extended into other Asian regions. This was perhaps necessitated by the failure of the SAARC to ensure regionalism in any substantial manner but more importantly, this is an acceptance of the pre-colonial and colonial linkages that had evolved and thrived till the emergence of the post 1945 global order signified by the Cold War dynamics. Given the importance of India's neighbourhood policymaking within the context of India's global diplomacy, the recently established Kolkata based think tank Bandhan-HP Ghosh Centre deemed it fit to initiate a research project trying to cover key areas of India's neighbourhood policymaking. The present volume, titled India and the Neighbourhood: Case Studies and edited by Suranjan Das and Shantanu Chakrabarti, is an outcome of the first phase of research under this project and covers India's evolving relations with her South Asian neighbours; with Central Asian Republics (CARs); Afghanistan and Bhutan.

Pranab Bardhan has been arguing for a long time that a Universal Basic Income policy can be effective in a country like India to relieve economic insecurity to a large extent. Bardhan has also constructed a thorough critique of the political direction India has been taking over the last few years leading to considerable social stress. For him, the health of a country's political economy depends on its people's capacity to exercise their democratic rights as well as their capacity to earn and spend. Thus, empowerment of the people is linked organically with income for the people. Bardhan's argument has emerged stronger in the wake of the COVID-19 onslaught. Many people, especially in the vast informal sector and in the salaried sector too, have suffered loss of income during the long spells of lockdown. Ensuring a basic income for them is crucial for social insurance as well as the rejuvenation of the economy as a whole. Indian Polity and Economy: A Mirror to Difficult Times, brings together some of Bardhan's articles written over the past five years on Universal Basic Income, the current political situation, and political-economy and policy, culminating in the recent pandemic period. Three interviews which he has given to media persons on these issues are also included. These will help understand Bardhan's standpoint more clearly. In one of the articles, he engages in a discourse with a prominent friend of his, Thomas Piketty, on how applicable the latter's arguments against the basic income are to India. Articles comparing the Indian situation with other countries, particularly Indonesia and China, put the picture in perspective.

Constitutional and human rights of people, most notablythe fundamental right to equality, the right to live with dignity, to question the state and dissenthave been trampled with impunity. Institutions of oversight have been systematically emaciated, with the functioning of the Parliament gravely compromised. Rise of fascism and crony capitalism, and the concomitant increase in violence in society have had a devastating impact on the lives of people, especially those belonging to the Dalit, Adivasi, Muslim and other marginalised communities. The COVID-19 crisis too has exposed manifold the apathetic and anti-poor nature of the state. Amidst the oppression and intimidation, however, the country has witnessed strong peoples' movements against injustice and tyranny. In December 2019, people all over India rose to protect the Constitution when the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was brought in along with National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR). Exactly one year after the CAA protests shook the country, millions of farmers took to the streets to protest against the anti-people farm laws passed by the Parliament. Reclaiming India: Views of Public Intellectuals is the culmination of a public lecture series organised by ANHAD in 2021-22; it hopes to start a conversation to explore the contours of a society that is more just, equal and aligned to the Constitutional values of liberty and fraternity. The lectures, on relevant themes by leading public intellectuals, as under, will provide an alternate vision for the country.

Among the Indian luminaries of the first half of the 20th Century, well-known in the East as well as the West, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1913), was arguably the most 'gifted' personality. An 'ambassador' of Indian culture to the West, Tagore also wrote voluminous essays and letters on socio-political issuesengaged himself in various protests against the raj; as a pacifist in international arena; and also as a polemical writer. It is not an easy task to carve out Tagore's Political Philosophy from an ocean-like and multifaceted works of the poet. It is more difficult to draw a coherent and cohesive position/perspective of the poet on various related issues like justice, gender, ecology, community development and so on. Even when his ideas on a particular phenomenon were very fluid, Tagore always tried to evaluate them in order to justify his standpoint. And the axes that helped him to judge/evaluate an event/issue/phenomenon were twofold: Satya/Truth and Sundara/Beauty, which can also be understood as Ethics and Aesthetics. These axes formed Tagore's axiology of weighing and evaluating all the social phenomena around him, including politics. The present book attempts to revisit Tagore's opinion and standpoints on these constituent elements of politics from the stance of this markeraxiology, so that many well-known aspects of his thought may be seen in a different light.

Their life is defined by caste-discrimination, exploitation, abuse, and denial of basic right to life with resources for survival food, shelter, clothing, livelihood, and education. Sufferings and pains associated with vicious cycle of poverty continue for generations together. Margins to Centre Stage: Empowering Dalits in India chronicles the process of empowerment of many powerless and marginalised Dalits, located in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It portrays the triumph of hope, courage and social action over despair, poverty, oppression and vulnerability narrating the struggle of Dalits who paved their way to a life of dignity, rightful share in the resources and decision making. The critique records how the innocent victims of custodial-torture become active human rights defenders or freedom of bonded-labourers is snatched from the confinement of feudal and capitalist oppressors, and the change of weavers' nightmares transformed into dreams, optimism and motivation. The discourse would be beneficial for the educators, students and practitioners of social work, and administrators in welfare and development sector, NGO workers, policy planners and all those who wish to build an egalitarian society that is free from all forms of exploitation and abuse. The postcolonial compendium aims at a compilation and brief explication of key terms used in the multidisciplinary field of forced migration and refugee studies. There have been significant debates, contributions, and interpretations in recent years which have reshaped the way academia analyses and maps refugee and migration studies, at the same time, expanding its scope. Research on refugees and forced migrants has had a long history cutting across disciplines, exploring multiple dynamics such as forced and voluntary movements, displacement and dispossession, heterogeneity and agency of forced migrants, human rights, humanitarianism, protection, practice and policy. In addition, academics, policy makers and practitioners are still contending with the diverse challenges that remain in the aftermath of a global pandemic and continue to permeate the refugee and migrant space exacerbating the precarious state of public health, particularly in the global south with far reaching consequences. At this critical juncture/crossroads, migrant and refugee studies as a field of enquiry is rapidly expanding and diversifying, concomitantly, its terminology is constantly evolving to keep pace with the burgeoning discipline, which found its moorings as a separate entity in the early 1980s. With the development of refugee and forced migration studies, academic research as well as advocacy in terms of the rights of migrants and refugees have acquired a global reach which in turn has induced the emergence of a rapidly growing literature focused on the same, including handbooks devoted to the study of refugees and forced migrants from an interdisciplinary perspective. In comparison, the vocabulary or terminology of refugee and forced migration studies, which has amplified by leaps and bounds in scope and importance, has not yet found a separate, focused and comprehensive compendium dedicated to itself. The Postcolonial Compendium: Keywords in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies intends to fill this lacuna/void.

"China's Economic Reform: Ideological Legitimacy and Deng Xiaoping Theory examines the discussions and debates among Chinese theoreticians and economists regarding the economic reform measure adopted by the leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the late 1970s. Based on an extensive survey of Chinese material, the study focuses on the internal discourse on the nature and rationale for economic reform, the decision to implement the "open-door" policy; as well as the attempts to legitimise the transition from a planned to a market economy. It also outlines the evolution of Deng Xiaoping Theory and the concerns of Chinese theoreticians and economists about the problems and prospects of the economic reform. More importantly, it endeavours to bring to light the Chinese attempts to explain and legitimise the economic reform in relationship to the ideals of Marxism and Mao Zedong Thought." Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: As New. Alipore Bomb Trial or Maniktala Conspiracy Case, as it is popularly known, occupies a significant place in the history of India's freedom struggle. Having failed to kill Lieutenant-Governor Andrew Fraser after two attempts, on 30 April 1908, two teenagers named Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki blasted a carriage at Muzaffarpur, Bihar mistaking it in darkness as the carrier of D H Kingsford, former Chief Presidency Magistrate, Calcutta. The Government acted with speed and success, and eventually 36 persons, including Sri Aurobindo, Barindra Kumar Ghose (younger brother of Sri Aurobindo), Upendra Nath Banerjee, Ullaskar Datta, Hemchandra Das were arrested and committed to trial in Alipore Sessions Court for "waging war against the King-Emperor". Alipore Bomb Trial, 1908-1910: A Compilation of Unpublished Documents, Volume 1, which includes hitherto unpublished documents related to the trial vis-a-vis the statements of all 206 witnesses along with 1,575 documents and materials placed before the court, is an invaluable companion for the students, researchers, academia and the general readership as well. With a researcher's acumen coupled with his long experience in dealing with criminal intelligence, the author critically examines the issues like Aurobindo's ideas on violent struggle and much 'published' influence of religion on early revolutionary terrorism, circumstances that led to the expansion of the secret societies, 'daring actions' like the murder of Naren Gossain, the approver, inside the jail, killing of Police Officer Nandalal Banerji for trying to arrest Prafulla Chaki at Mokama Ghat Station, elimination of Ashutosh Biswas for acting as the prosecutor in the case, assassination of Rai Bahadur Moulavi Shamsul Alam for fabricating evidence against the accused and murder of Intelligence Officer Madhusudan Bhattacharya who traced the Garden as the centre of 'conspiracy'.
