It comprises five chapters along with an introduction and an epilogue. The historical focus is on the Jesuits' institutional developments placed in front of a background of American religious, cultural, and social change. A thread of investigation running through the entire book is into the relationship of Jesuit activities in America to those in Europe, and then by the twentieth century (as US Jesuits are increasingly assigned to 'foreign missions') to those around the globe, especially Latin America. The five chapters are organized chronologically and are divided as follows: the colonial period (mid-sixteenth to mid-eighteenth century), the suppression and restoration (late eighteenth/early nineteenth century), the nineteenth century, the early twentieth century, the late twentieth century. An epilogue offers reflections on the present and future in light of the past'.

Neuware - 'Before the Gilded Age is the first modern and thorough biography of William Wilson Corcoran (1798-1888), one of the nation's earliest and most successful political insiders, financiers, philanthropists, and shapers of the emerging cultural elite during the era before the Gilded Age. He was a college dropout (Georgetown College) who became one of the richest men in Washington. A controversial figure in his own time and ours, Corcoran was a masterful political 'shapeshifter' whose chameleonlike ability to work both sides of the Mason-Dixon line during and after the Civil War enabled him to thrive seamlessly between sitting out the war in Europe while rumors of treason swirled around him and then returning to the capital after the Union victory. He was friendly with Robert E. Lee and William Tecumseh Sherman; Jefferson Davis and Daniel Webster. He owned at least two individuals and worked to end Home Rule, disenfranchising the voters of Washington, DC, and ending Reconstruction in the District. He was one of the earliest consistent practitioners of the much-reviled activity of lobbying. And he devised the strategy to leverage public debt to finance the US prosecution of the Mexican-American War. Yet he also played a key role in stabilizing and merchandizing US financial securities at home and abroad, created a bank that remained independent for 175 years (Riggs Bank), and founded the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Corcoran's failings are examined along with his contributions to some of the major developments in finance and philanthropy of his era'.

Neuware - 'Perhaps no other single day in US history was as threatening to the survival of the nation as August 24, 1814, when British forces captured Washington, DC. It is a unique moment in American history that might have significantly altered the nation's path forward, but the event and the reasons why it happened are little remembered by most Americans. The British conquest of Washington, DC during the War of 1812 happened because of inept American leadership, a poorly trained and equipped military, and a lack of foresight. The burning of federal building, including the White House and Capitol, reversed a decade and a half of work to build the capital city. The humiliation of a foreign army eating dinner at the president's table and the flight of the federal government reopened old questions about the survival of the United States, what kind of government it would have, and where its capital should be located. Yet the British invasion was repulsed over the coming weeks and months, and from the ashes of the capital city, the United States ultimately emerged stronger. Robert P. Watson tells this almost forgotten history and probes questions about the American calamity, British motives, and what it all meant for the United States'.

The two countries are now competitors locked in a long-term rivalry, but how volatile the rivalry will become is still to be determined. The book explores not only the historical roots and contemporary foreign policy aspects of this era, but the volume also looks at the economic, military, and technological arenas of US-China strategic competition. In doing so, this volume highlights important differences in US and Chinese perspectives. A final section of the volume explores future scenarios for the relationship from different perspectives but with all of them coming to the sobering conclusion about a future marked by expanding differences, growing tensions, economic disengagement, and pressures for a global competition. This policy-relevant book provides a comprehensive overview of US-China strategic competition and reinvigorates thinking about how to avoid reaching a crisis point'.
