Paperback. Condizione: New. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, tensions were high, but not everyone felt the same effects of British oppression. Connecticut newspapers took up the mantle to not just report the injustices, but actively convince and insight their readers to stand up and rebel. Charles Cutter lays bare the influence of the press to start the war that gave birth to our nation as we know it.As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared] yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on the field of battle.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Black soldiers of the American Revolution? Not a credible statement in light of what most Americans have read about the Revolutionary War. We have heard of Casimir Pulaski the Pole, Marquis de Lafayette the Frenchman, and Baron von Steuben the German, but not black participants. Yet, close to 5,000 blacks did ?ght in the war against the British, and others served as laborers, spies, and guides. The absence in our general histories of their activities in this struggle lies with the misconception that the Afro-American has contributed little or nothing towards the creation of the United States and its subsequent development, for in most studies made of the Revolutionary era, there has been little impulse to search for evidences of service by blacks, except perhaps to note the existence of slavery. Histories of Connecticut have generally treated the Revolution in a similar manner. Few of them have acknowledged the contributions of the black soldier. This is partially true because the story of Connecticut's black participant is one about the regular foot soldier in the Revolution and not about the men who led him into battle or the political leaders who guided the nation. And it is these men who most often fill the pages of our history books. As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared] yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on the field of battle.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. America won the Revolutionary War against all odds. They were outnumbered and outmaneuvered for the majority of the war, but a few strategic wins turned the tables. One such strategic encounter occurred after the war was won-in Danbury, the British planned a massive raid on Danbury's magazine of stores in April 1777. Robert McDevitt outlines the leading causes and comprehensive history of this tumultuous time from a British viewpoint. As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. Paperback. Condizione: New. One year after her successful trip across Glacier National Park with Howard Eaton, chronicled in Through Glacier Park, mystery novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart was back in the saddle, heading into the rugged Western portion of the park with her family and ready for more adventure. She wrote, looking at the daunting road ahead, "But all this was before us then. We only knew it was summer, that the days were warm and the nights cool, that the streams were full of trout, that such things as telegraphs and telephones were falling far in our rear, and that before us was the Big Adventure." Rinehart's humor and enthusiasm about her summer-long camping adventure through the Rocky Mountains and Cascades is full of the newness of the experience, the wonders of the relatively unexplored park, and the same wonders that inspire visitors today are still fresh for a modern audience. With a foreword by her grandson, Rick Rinehart, this edition is a classic to be enjoyed by a new generation.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. From the Preface: In the 1700s, American colleges like Yale were hotbeds of intellectual activity that lead the country to revolution. According to author Louis Tucker, this volume is a study that "seeks to assess the role of Yale College in the American Revolution. It especially focuses on the part played by Yale in the development of the spirit of rebellion in Connecticut.A number of Yale trained Whigs carried the torch of rebellion into other colonies and assumed roles of leadership when the political crisis deepened." As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared] yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on the field of battle.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Hiking and backpacking are unique "sports" which require a unique blend of strength, conditioning, and athleticism unlike most recreational physical endeavors. People need strength to climb steep ascents, conditioning to endure long mile days, and athleticism to handle their own body on rugged terrain. Now add on the harsh, rugged conditions of the mountains and it can be a recipe for struggle - but it doesn't have to be. Hike Strong: The Complete Guide to Building Trail Strength, Endurance, and Confidence for Hiking and Backpacking will help alleviate the "fitness anxiety" that some can experience when thinking about tackling the mountain they've always wanted to climb. Written by a licensed hiking guide and professional strength and conditioning coach, this book will be a transformative fitness guide designed for outdoor enthusiasts who want to confidently enjoy the trail. This guide will offer a practical, step-by-step approach to preparing readers both physically and mentally so they can arrive at any trailhead fully confident in their abilities. The tools and programming they'll learn will help them feel strong and perform well from trailhead to summit and back again. In Hike Strong, readers will find training programs that combine strength-building, conditioning, balance, and mobility tailored specifically to the demands of hiking and backpacking. They'll also learn the "why" and "how" behind these programs. Conventional wisdom has told people to "just go running" to get in shape for hiking. This guide takes a vastly different approach and instead teaches that strength training is the way to properly prepare oneself for the demands of the backcountry. The author's training modalities have been proven over and over by the successful results his clients have experienced in the mountains following his training program. This book will inspire readers to be excited to embark on new adventures, knowing they have the tools to make every step of the adventure a rewarding one.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Death of a Texas Ranger is the thrilling, action-packed story of the murder of Texas Ranger John Green by Cesario Menchaca, one of three Rangers of Mexican descent under Green's command. Immediately word spread that the killing may have been the botched outcome of a contract taken out on Menchaca's life by the notorious Gabriel Marnoch, a local naturalist who had run up against the law himself. But was it? Much more than just a story about a tragic frontier killing, it is the story of an era. The events leading up to the murder and Green's son's decades' long quest for justice for his father's killer exemplify the chaotic frontier society in Texas after the Civil War, a time fraught with political turmoil and cultural clashes. Amidst that chaos, the virgin landscape of Texas was a magnet to those interested in the natural sciences in the nineteenth century, an era often referred to as the Age of Darwin. The clash between the seemingly pastoral landscape with its offerings for science and the brutal history of the region ties this very readable regional history into the larger American story.…
