Condizione: Near fine. Signed limited first edition thus, an out of sequence copy not signed or numbered on the limitation page, but instead signed by Gorey on the title page. This poem was first composed in 1872 as "Le Hareng saur," an unusual example of French nonsense verse a genre much more popular in England than in France. As Scott Bates notes, "if there is any one French poem that appears to fit the criteria of childishness, gratuitousness, and unconscious revolt characteristic of true nonsense, it is Charles Cros's 'Le Hareng saur." 5.25'' x 6''. Original green pictorial wrappers. Illustrated by Gorey in black and white. Translated from the French by Alphonse Allais. [44] pages. Signed by Gorey on the title page, crossing out his name. Touch of the sunning that often affects this title, tiny bump to corner.
