The mode of life of this isopod is peculiar and interesting. The second species of the genus, Ichthyoxenus montanus, was described by Schioedte and Meinert in 1884. Up to the present time these two were the only species known.".

Later in the laboratory the true worth of the catch was disclosed when the specimen was identified as the very rare Helocordulia selysii.".
