Corners and head of spine are lightly worn; tips of corners also bent. Speckly stains on cloth, plus a light, semicircular stain on the front cover. Hinges have been reinforced with transparent, acid-free archival tape, so the binding is tight. The pages are tanned and slightly brittle. Early owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Light foxing and occasional small blemishes in the margins, but otherwise, text itself unmarked. Captivity narrative of Matthew Brayton of Ohio, who was kidnapped as a child by Native Americans and grew up among several tribes, being traded further and further west as time went on. He lived among the Potawatomi, Chippewa, Sioux, and Snake peoples before finally rejoining white civilization and serving in the Civil War. This account is largely regarded by scholars as authentic; it was first published in 1860 (offered here is the scarcer second edition). See Howes B736. Measures approx. 6" x 4.5". …

28 1/4 x 19 1/4 inches. This is a well composed map It covers Northcentral Pennsylvania.Couties covered in part or whole are; Clinton, Centre, Clearfield Cameron Lycoming , Tioga, Potter and Elk. The rising theme is carried on throughout with fish illustrated on the map. The exterior areas resemble the style of old dutch maps with vinettes on the left, right, and bottom. Their is a cartouche in the upper left with the title. Of note is a circle shaded in red title Quehanna. It was a private compound run by Curtis Wright company where research was conducted on reactor power and nuclear jet engines. Very good with some folds separating, see pics.…

According to Ernest J. Wessen, this reprint is rarer than the first edition of 1860 published in Cleveland. Brayton was stolen near his home in Ohio in 1825 and sold to the Pottawatomi, who took him to Michigan, where he lived among the Winnebago, Chippewa, and Sioux. The latter took him west, where he was again sold, this time to the Snake, who adopted him into their tribe. Brayton apparently lived among the Snake on the upper Missouri River, following them to California, where he remained some five years. He describes fighting the Blackfeet in Oregon as well as his extraordinary thirty-four years of wandering all over the West. He finally reconciled himself to civilization, enlisted in the army in 1861, and was killed at Pittsburgh Landing in 1862. "Extraordinary as the incidents appear, there is abundant proof of its entire truth" - Thomson. "It is quite true that it would not have been possible for Brayton to have made some of the movements described among the tribes named. On the other hand the critics have overlooked the fact that Brayton was taken at the age of seven and lived among the Indians for thirty-four years. He could not read or write, and spoke English with some difficulty.There remains not the slightest doubt that Matthew was a Brayton, and his narrative is, in general, correct" - Wessen.
