Following his Abitur (A-levels) in 1940, Rehfeldt volunteered for the Panzer Arm but was trained on the heavy mortar and heavy MG with Grossdeutschland Division. He was on the Fr…ont from 1941 fighting for the city of Tula, south of Moscow. Battling in freezing conditions, at its lowest -52?, the descriptions of the privations are vivid and terrifying. With no winter clothes they resorted to using those taken from Soviet corpses. In 1942, fighting near Oriel, however, his batallion suffered heavy losses and was disbanded. Ill with frostbitten legs, Rehfeldt was treated in hospital and once recovered was dispatched to the Front. Following various battles (Werch, Bolchov) his batallion again suffered heavy losses and it merged. In agony from severe frostbite to his legs, Rehfeldt defied the odds and astonished his surgeon when he walked again. He was promoted from Gunner to Trained Private Soldier in 1942, and to Corporal for bravery in the field in 1943. He was awarded numerous honours including the Wound Badge and the Infantry Assault Badge. On 3 May 1945 he was captured by US Forces and held as PoW for one month in a camp at Waschow before internment in Holstein from where he was released in July 1945 after agreeing to work on the land. In December 1945 he began studying veterinary medicine: his future career. This astonishing account of a man who kept bouncing back from near death is a testament to the author's determination and sheer strength of spirit. For the first time, The Lusitania Sinking tells the story in the emotive framework of a family looking for information on their son's death. On 1 May 1915, the 29-year-old student Preston Prichard embarked as a Second Class passenger on the Lusitania, bound from New York for Liverpool. By 2pm on the afternoon of 7 May, the liner was approaching the coast of Ireland when she was sighted by the German submarine U-20 . A single torpedo caused a massive explosion in the Lusitania's hold, and the ship began sank rapidly. Within 20 minutes she disappeared and 1,198 men, women and children, including Preston, died. Uncertain of Preston's fate, his family leaped into action. His brother Mostyn, who lived in Ramsgate, travelled to Queenstown to search morgues but could find nothing. Preston's mother wrote hundreds of letters to survivors to find out more about what might have happened in his last moments. The Lusitania Sinking compiles the responses received. Perhaps sensing his fate, Prichard had put his papers in order before embarking and told a fellow student where to find his will if anything happened to him. During the voyage, he was often seen in the company of Grace French, quoted above. Alice Middleton, who had a crush on him but was too shy to speak to him throughout the entire voyage, remembered that he helped her in reaching the upper decks during the last moments of the sinking: "[The Lusitania] exploded and down came her funnels, so over I jumped. I had a terrible time in the water, 41/2 hours bashing about among the wreckage and dead bodies. It was 10.30 before they landed me at the hospital in an unconscious condition. In fact, they piled me with a boat full of dead and it was only when they were carrying the dead bodies to the Mortuary that they discovered there was still life in me.". Between the entry of the US and the end of the Second World War in Europe, the three huge Cunard liners Aquitania, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth carried a million GIs and British Empire troops across the North Atlantic at up to 16,000 men per voyage - without either naval or air escort. What be…came known as the 'Shuttle Service' was a great gamble, but it was considered a risk worth taking since it was the only way so many men could be transported to the theatre of war so quickly: indeed, Churchill reckoned they shortened the war by a whole year. The ships themselves were very fast, and were armed for self-defence, but to avoid potential U-boat traps they relied heavily on intelligence, now known to be the product of 'Ultra' (decoded Enigma traffic). The author, as a young Australian naval reservist, served as a cipher officer on these ships, so was at the centre of this work. Although he was not supposed to, he kept a private journal, and his attendance at sailing conferences allowed him to record details that would otherwise have been lost. His book combines a personal account of these years, with a knowledgeable analysis of how this feat was organised, both ashore and aboard the ships themselves. Conditions were so tight that soldiers slept in shifts (the original 'hot bunking'), while so much water was consumed that the ships became dangerously unstable as the double-bottom tanks were emptied during the voyage. By way of contrast with the testing environment afloat, the author also provides some entertaining observations of life in wartime London and New York.
