In comparison to German, English syntax is much stricter which results in different syntactic treatments of verbs in both languages. Besides, nowadays the only productive class among these consists of the regular weak verbs. All new loans are incorporated into this class and must therefore rigorously follow its inflectional paradigms. In that, the integration of verbal anglicisms into German is different from the integration of nouns which provides a fruitful area of linguistic research. Sometimes, however, we diverge from the maximally effective way of communication and, naturally-enough, the question arises, why we do so. The divergence, however, which seems to be highly irrational as far as efficiency is concerned will turn out to be highly rationally motivated - with politeness being the main reason for this process. In the following, I will (1) sketch out the maxims according to which effective communication takes place and (2) analyse the reasons why it is sometimes advisable to intentionally counteract to the requisite maxims. For this purpose, I will refer to different works of well known linguists, especially to the model of politeness suggested by Brown and Levinson ( 1987). Manipulationsvorwürfe wurden gerade in jüngster Zeit publik, wie z. B. in dem in dieser Arbeit betrachteten Fall der Firma Comroad AG. Rückblickend gesehen weiß man, dass Wirtschaftskriminalität existiert, seitdem es Handel und Warenverkehr gibt. Dies ist ein ernsthaftes Problem in unserer Gesellschaft, da es vor dem Hintergrund wachsender Globalisierung und durch die zunehmende Komplexität der Geschäftsabläufe kaum möglich ist, diese Kriminalität zu kontrollieren. Daraus resultiert dann eine Zunahme der Wirtschaftsstraftaten, wie z. B. Bilanzmanipulationen. Diese Arbeit befasst sich inhaltlich vorrangig mit einer Materie, die sowohl von wissenschaftlicher als auch von praktischer Relevanz ist. Denn durch die zahlreichen Bilanzmanipulationen führen diese für die betroffenen Akteure, also diejenigen, die dadurch ihr Geld an der Börse verlieren, zu erheblichen Vermögensschäden, was ein ernsthaftes Problem darstellt. Weiterhin beeinträchtigen Bilanzmanipulationen das Funktionieren der Kapitalmärkte. Zum Teil können die Abschlussprüfer durch ihre Kontrolltätigkeiten einen Ansatzpunkt zur Vermeidung bzw. zur Aufdeckung betrügerischer Manipulationen aufzeigen. Jedoch ist das Vertrauen in die Wirtschaftsprüfer bedingt durch die zahlreichen Bilanzmanipulationen in jüngster Zeit verlorengegangen, somit wurde der Berufsstand der Wirtschaftsprüfer in der Öffentlichkeit negativ beeinträchtigt. Ziel der Arbeit wird es sein, die Ursachen der Bilanzmanipulationen zu analysieren und deren Hintergründe näher darzustellen. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird zunächst einmal der Begriff Bilanzdelikte definiert und die dazugehörigen Eigenschaften näher erläutert. Im darauf folgenden Kapitel werden die Ursachen von Bilanzfälschungen analysiert. Hauptaugenmerk dieser Arbeit ist der Bilanzskandal der Firma Comroad AG. Hier wird dargelegt, wie die Firma vorgegangen ist und wie ihre Bilanzmanipulation schließlich aufgedeckt wurde. Anschließend folgt die Darstellung des Urteils des Landgerichtes München I im November 2002. Die Ergebnisse der Arbeit und deren kritische Betrachtung sind Gegenstand des Schlusskapitels.
