Yeditepe University Istanbul, course: Terrorism in Context, language: English, abstract: Terrorism is an extremely complex phenomenon which can involve a multitude of motives, strategies and actors. Even if terrorism is not an invention of the modern age but it has its roots in the ancient times, the contemporary forms of terrorism display special features. One of them is the ¿media-oriented terrorism¿ (Martin 2003: 281). It is linked to the emergence of mass media that allow a global and life coverage of terrorist acts. This paper will examinate which role the media play for terrorism. How do the media treat the phenomenom of terrorism (chapter 2) After a brief summary of guidelines of news media the major focus will lie on the coverage of terrorist incidents in reality. As another feature of the mediäs perspective the governmental attempts to restrict the freedom of reporting will be described. The second part of this paper will deal with the mediäs role for terrorist strategies (chapter 3). What does media-oriented terrorism mean concretely Chapter 5 draws a conclusion from the precedent analysis, after chapter 4 has dealt with the delicate: What are the effects of the mediäs involvement in terrorism Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

They got nearly 39 %. In the first two parliamentary elections after the independence in 1991 the part of the non-voters was about 32 % (1992) and 31 % (1995). The peak was in 1999: 43 % of people didn¿t go the election. Reetz is speaking about a gap between the political problems and the interests of the people. Because of the perception of the elites is different from the ordinary people¿s perception. It is very surprising, that nearly every party, which is in the Riigikogu is centre, centre-right or liberalistic. Maybe this is a result of the Soviet occupation and the experiences of this time. However in the future there could be a general movement to the left, because the competition on the democratic right could become to strong. After all parties are not static ¿ they have to change themselves if they want to participate because they are a part of the society and the society changes too. On the other hand the result of a free competition is parties will fill political gaps by changing their attitudes to achieve new voters.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: 13, Saarland University, language: English, abstract: It is now widely accepted that the law of the European member states should be harmonized to make Europe¿s economy more competitive. Business needs to operate across borders efficiently to stimulate a more competitive supply of goods and services. A plurality of separate solutions for the same issue is a risk that the uncertainty and complexity of the legal environment will undermine rather than enable legitimate economic activity. Therefore we need to create an economic environment underpinned by legal certainty and security. This essay on European Private Law discusses the progress of Europeanization in the field of Contract Law. It will, in doing so, especially focus on legal education and its contribution to achieve unification and harmonisation of European Union law. But, as the title indicates, in the actual centre of this essay, will be one scholar, who has significantly contributed to the understanding of comparative law and who has increased its status as a recognised legal subject: Basil Markesinis. It is furthermore my goal to provide English law students who are interested in comparative law topics with a guide to useful literature for their studies, especially with regards to German Law. I hope that this essay can contribute that comparative law may no longer be a ¿subject in search of an audience¿, as Markesinis called it[1], and to persuade English students of the benefits of comparative law studies.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

This seminar paper deals about the perspectives and opportunities the new president and his government have in security and counterterrorism policy. In the past years these two fields of policy have had a dominant role in the whole US policy. One can expect despite the difficult situation of US economy this status will remain. In consequence the paper¿s aim is to find out how the Obama government may be able to run a more successful security and counterterrorism policy than the Bush government. For this case an evaluation of the former administrations policy is necessary here. The evaluation will point out the failures of the Bush government and offer the tasks for the future policy guidelines. It will be Barack Obamäs challenge to correct the mistakes of his precursor. In addition to this he has to face the global threats with his own security and counterterrorism policy. Of course Obama knows about his future work in these cases. In his campaign program he offered different statements and solutions for security and counterterrorism policy tasks. An introduction and analysis of the program will provide the informative basis for naming the perspectives and opportunities. The analysis will be completed by an estimate for the policy options and own suggestions on facing the two policy areas.Of course the national and the global economy will have a high priority for Barack Obama. But not only by the cases Afghanistan and Iraq security and counterterrorism policy will be a high-class topic for the new administration. The international community has high expectations on Barack Obamäs policy. George W. Bush has left his successor a mostly negative reputation in the world. The double challenge on Barack Obama will be to rebuild the global reputation of USA by concurrently making security policy and fighting terrorism. The question is if Obama will be able to handle the balancing act of rebuilding the reputation and fighting terrorism.Obama has to find a coherent policy, which brings all the mentioned topics together. In chapter 3 the paper will name and evaluate ways to realize the balancing act into concrete policy. The next years will be asking for many important decisions. Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Al-Qaeda, Israel/Palestine and a lot more crisis issues call for answers by US security and counterterrorism policy.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote a number of short stories, novels and poems all dealing with the situation of women as wives, mothers, workers, artists and individuals. But although the subjects of all her works are critical and particularly provoking for the time, not flattering Gilman with a lot of fame, ¿The Yellow Wallpaper¿ is both in style and draft distinctive, more subtle and effective, and it unites her various points of social criticism to a strong attack on a system that ruins female sanity and suppresses female creativity.By the time of its first publication in 1892 it was read as a horror tale, since it contains elements typical for stories in the tradition of Poe, and because of its terrifying impact on the reader. To me a complete misunderstanding of the textual depth and message. But nevertheless the famous sentence in the letter of Horace E. Scudder, the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, rejecting the publication in his magazine, shows that there must have been a presentiment of the accusing content and real power of the story.¿I could not forgive myself if I made others as miserable as I have made myself!¿The ignorance from the male-dominated audience of Gilman¿s time made the publication difficult and even after it was published, it remained widely unnoticed and unprinted until it was reinterpreted by Elaine R. Hedges from a feminist angle in 1973 during the rise of feminist literary criticism. With Hedges interpretation the story got the attention it deserved and was, for the first time, acknowledged for what it is. In addition to that she connected the author¿s life and the narrator¿s story. ¿The Yellow Wallpaper¿ is fictive, but there are undoubtedly so many parallels to the authors biography that it cannot be understood without knowing the biographical background.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2, University of Hamburg, course: Tense, Aspect and Modality, language: English, abstract: In their analysis of the perfect in English and German Klein and Vater postulate that the English present perfect and the German Perfekt are very much the same except that the Perfekt has two additional usages. They refer to Anderson (Anderson, 1982:228) and list five major usages of perfect in the English language to which exist corresponding usages in the German Perfekt and give the following examples ¿ the example for the present continuous is left out because it does not concern the analysis given in this paper:1. ExperientialHave you ever been to Japan Sind sie je in Japan gewesen 2. Current relevance of anteriorHe has studied the whole book. (So he can help.)Paul hat sich mit Biologie befasst. (Paul kennt sich damit aus.)3. New situation, ¿hot news¿The Etna has just erupted!Eben hat es geblitzt!4. Result-stateHe has gone. (or) He is gone. (is not here)Er ist weggegangen. (Er ist weg.)The two additional functions they see are that the Perfekt can easily relate to the future and often functions like the English simple past as can be shown by the following examples:1. The Colossus of Rhodos weighed 100 tons.Der Koloss von Rhodos hat 100 Tonnen gewogen2. Tomorrow at ten, Peter will have left London.Morgen um zehn hat Peter London verlassen. In their proceeding they postulate that the tense systems of English and German do not mainly differ with respect to the perfect but that the role of the present tense is to blame for the observation made in the beginning. They base this conclusion on an excerpt from Comrie who wrote about the compositional structure of the perfect ¿ being a composite of a present tense auxiliary and a past participle ¿ that ¿the present auxiliary conveys the present meaning, while the past participle conveys that of past action¿ (Comrie, 1976:107).Klein and Vater¿s assumption is that in the English language the present tense is closely bound to the moment of speech whereas in German it is relatively free in this regard (Klein/Vater, 1998:221). This led to a lively discussion in the course with two main points. The first being whether it is justified to state that English and German differ crucially in their usage of the present tense, and the second, assuming this difference really exists, whether it is the reason for the additional functions of the Perfekt.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Therefore, I will first put Ayckbourn¿s play within the historical context of the new drama, and subsequently define the term ¿comedy¿. Then, I will prove my thesis that Season¿s Greetings matches both conventionality and innovation with regard to comedy. In this way, I will also investigate in how far Season¿s Greetings as comedy contains both farcical and tragic elements, and suits other subgenres of comedy, too. Likewise, I will analyse how Ayckbourn makes use of the comic in Season¿s Greetings, and discuss if he continues the comic tradition with a new emphasis with regard to the assumption that he, like Shakespeare, writes plays for the spectator rather than the reader, among other things. In the conclusion, I will recap and reconsider the principal theses of my term paper and give my own diagnosis about Ayckbourn¿s drama. My thesis matters in so far that ¿the continuing life that [¿] comedies have [¿] justifies our study of the genre [¿]¿. Besides, English comedy has ¿the longest, most continuous generic tradition in Western literature¿, in which its tendency to the meta-theatrical achieves an awareness of the comic tradition onstage (cf. It was first printed in 1600 (Cerasano 2), with the title: ¿The most excellent History of the Merchant of Venice. With the extreame crueltie of Shylocke the Iewe towards the sayd Merchant, in cutting a iust pound of his fleshe: and the obtayning of Portia by the choyse of three chests. As it hath beene divers times acted by the Lord Chamberlaine his servants¿ (Alexander 8). This title might give the one or other reader food for thought. It implies that Shakespeare¿s contemporaries must have seen the play, especially the character Shylock, ¿in dissimilar terms¿ from us nowadays (Cerasano 55).The following work will shed some light on the changes in reception and interpretation of 'The Merchant of Venice', which have developed from the time of its creation until today, which is an absolutely natural process, as ¿texts change with time and audience¿ (Alexander 90). To get to the bottom of these changes, especially the character Shylock and the attitudes of the audiences of the different centuries towards him have to be brought into focus. This work will show in what ways these attitudes and thus the reception have changed and where these changes derive from.In addition to that, a selection of suggestions made by twentieth-century critics for interpreting the play, as it might have been meant to be by Shakespeare, will be introduced. His underlying intention has been debated over very much, which has given rise to an abundance of divergent interpretations, especially about how Shylock has to be assessed and how Shakespeare himself saw him. To find answers, we have to enter ¿into Elizabethan attitudes and beliefs¿ and theatrical conventions which have influenced him, because ¿an author can only be properly understood in the context of his own times¿ (Gross 181) and ¿the more knowledge [¿] we bring to it the richer our reading is likely to be¿ (Moody 20).BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

The use of irony can easily become a tightrope walk for the speaker between being friendly and funny or being rude and offending. Irony can also be challenging for the addressee, if a situation is ambiguous and if he or she therefore must find out how a remark is meant to be understood. Since irony is an indirect way of saying what one is thinking it often leads to misunderstandings or awkward situations. However, irony might also be used very well directed and purposeful. For instance, irony is often used when criticizing someone and can in this case fulfill either the function of enhancing or reducing the criticism. Some researchers, however, disagree about the function of irony in this context. Is irony now a face-saving tool or does it help to attack face What are the determining factors to decide this, if at all such factors can be found How do different researchers understand the function of irony in politeness theories, and can some similarities between the different approaches be found These are questions that shall be answered in this paper. The politeness theories of Brown and Levinson (1987) and Leech (1991) will provide a basis for these considerations and will be complemented by newer surveys. In spite of the different statements made by various researchers in their theories and surveys, irony seems to not only have a face-saving function. When sarcasm is understood as a subordinate form of irony then irony can be used very well to also attack face.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

And Dalit, Tribal and women theologians have added a socio-cultural dimension to liberation. Liberation has become an everyday topic of Indian masses.Liberation is a common concern. However, in all the varied and complex situations of India, Latin American theology can neither define our experience nor offer solutions. But it has definitely given a hermeneutical key, an important starting point of the experience of the marginalized. Thus, Indian liberation theologies like Dalit liberation theology, Feminists¿ theology, tribal theologies, etc., are inspirations from Latin American liberation theology. But there are quite substantial points of differences according to the foci and features. In the following I shall deal with three specific requisites for any Indian liberation theology.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Constance, language: English, abstract: [.] The aim of this work will be, on the one hand, to describe the history of German settlement on both continents, and more importantly of the influence of German on American English as well as on Australian English. On the other hand, a direct comparison between the German influences will be made, and hopefully it will prove that even though half the globe separates both continents from each other, there are similarities to be found. It is to be expected though, that if there are analogies, they will be regionally restricted, since both in the United States and in Australia, contact situations seem to be restricted to those areas where Germans settled from the earliest days on. Beside the clarification of some general definitions, which will prove necessary for an understandable analysis, the difficulties in researching this topic will be made evident. One thing that will not be considered in this examination is the influence of Yiddish- German on American English since, one the one hand, it proves hard to differentiate exactly between the German and the Yiddish aspects and on the other hand because the Jewish impact on Australian English is marginal. Therefore Yiddish-German is rather unimportant in the comparison of both varieties. [.]BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin (Master of Business Administration), course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: If you take the words of a former General Electrics (GE) employee to define strategy, William E. Rothschild said, ¿What do you want to achieve or avoid The answers to this question are objectives. How will you go about achieving your desired results The answer to this you can call strategy.¿This statement not only highlights the need for strategy but also the need to bring strategy to fruition. Companies should not only devise strategy but also successfully clarify and execute their strategies. This means that a company has to be able to measure its strategic success.Unfortunately, company strategy is not always transparent or understood in the same way by a company¿s key players. Sun Tzu, a Chinese military strategist who wrote the military treatise The Art of War, praised this aspect for strategies in war as follows: ¿All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved¿.The Strategy Map created by Kaplan and Norton is to facilitate corporate strategy development and execution providing a missing link between strategy formulation and strategy implementation by identifying the key internal processes that drive strategic success and by aligning investment in people, technology and organizational capital for the greatest impact. The first part of the assignment describes in detail the theoretical framework of Strategy Maps. The second part uses the theory to describe and visualize the Strategy Map of General Electric Medical Systems (GEMS) ¿ the world¿s leading manufacturer of diagnostic imaging equipment. This practical approach is based on the publication of Tarun Khanna about GEMS in the Harvard Business School Press in February 2003. In conclusion, there is a brief up-to-date situation on GEMS after 2002 and some statements to the authors¿ experience in creating the GEMS Strategy Map.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 36 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: Soft Skills & Leadership Qualities, language: English, abstract: The American William Ellery Channing once said that ¿difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.¿Life is full of conflicts. Wherever choices exist there is potential for disagreement. Such differences, when handled properly, can result in richer, more effective, creative solutions and interaction. But it is difficult to consistently turn differences into opportunities. Poorly managed disagreements could lead to a psychological distance between people based on negative feelings like competition and disregard.Conflict is inevitable in business relationships, as it is in social relationships. Without conflict, growth is limited. Unresolved conflict can be poisonous to the productivity of a company. Conflicts that are not handled or that are handledin an inappropriate way could become expensive for a company. Thus, managers spend a lot of time dealing with conflicts or its aftermath. This indicates how much resources are wasted by wrong conflict management; a huge amount of a company¿s workforce is kept away from daily business and productive work. The challenge is to identify conflict situations in their beginning stage and to manage them constructively to discover new opportunities and to transform conflict into a productive learning experience.Whereas chapter 1.2 describes some important conflict types and the reasons for their arising, chapter 2.1 describes the first signs of conflict arising to sensitise to the roots of conflicts. By focussing on the business environment, chapter 2.2 and 2.3 show ways to minimise unnecessary conflicts and to manage unavoidable conflicts. Chapter 2.4 states important soft skills managers must develop to resolve conflicts successfully. This paper ends with interesting facts and figures about the importance of conflict management in organisations to underline the topicality of this issue.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 36 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,0, University of Frankfurt (Main), course: Financial Regulation, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the terms entry regulation, financial market competition and alsoindicates connections to potential financial crises. Authors in research have beenattempting for years to build up a remedy for an optimal set-up.1So, this is the reason I observe a seemingly never-ending discussion between twounofficial parties: Neither the proponents of the concentration-stability view, neitherthose of the concentration-fragility view will retreat from how to install propercompetition in order to ensure stability. This paper also aims to understand the terms of both parties; their arguments andwhether either monopolistic structures or competition are desirable in the financialindustry. Therefore, I lay the theoretical foundation. I demonstrate with a model of the authorsBoyd & De Nicoló that even economies with monopolistic structure are exposed torisk-taking activities ¿ and not only banks in competitive industries. In chapter 3, I turnto the topic ¿Entry Regulation¿. I unveil different yardsticks of entry regulation, revealsome advantages and draw up my own index. I show that mainly countries thatsuffered devastating crises in recent times have stringent entry regulation. This can beshown by regarding their high capital requirements or their barriers for submittinginformation of managers, future plans or composition of shareholders. I also show thatentry regulation is an appropriate means for governments to control or to curbcompetition. In the last chapter, it is also shown that high entry capital requirementsprevent mainly weak or inefficient banks from entry. In chapter 4, I present two ratios for assessing competition: The concentration ratio(CR) and H-Statistics (H). CR is widely used in literature and defines the market shareof the largest banks in a country. By presenting CR, I also turn back to the argumentbetween the concentration-stability and concentration-fragility views. Moreover, I domy part to debilitate the somewhat misleading statement that the European bankingmarket is in a phase of consolidation and concentration. I do this by revealing that theconcentration ratio slightly decreased in a time span of four years during the currentdecade. H-Statistics is a ratio to find out more about the ferocity and contestability of a market and how market participants react to changes in output prices. I show that thereis, maybe surprisingly, no strict correlation between CR and H-Statistics.[.]Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 44 pp. Englisch.

Whereas H&M follows an aggressive marketing and PR strategy, ZARA does virtually no advertising. But both companies known for their ¿fast fashion¿ dress fashionable people around the globe and compete for the title of the largest clothing retailer in Europe in a league of their own. Thus, two main questions arise: What makes both companies so successful and what are the fundamental differences and similarities in their business models The following assignments starts with presenting the background and development of both companies and giving a short overview about the clothing retail industry. Chapter two explores the business models of H&M and ZARA in terms of the whole value chain. Based chapter two, the assignment ends with summarizing both business strategies to provide a reasonable answer to the key question: If you would have 100 euro to invest, in which company would you invest in: H&M or ZARA BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 36 pp. Englisch.

Trust is built and maintained by many small actions over time.In the business environment, trust is also warned, over time, through day-to-day actions making the right choices even in difficult situations. There is a human need to trust and respect the leaders into whose hands we deliver ourselves. Trust forms the foundation for effective communication, employee retention, and employee motivation and contribution of discretionary energy, the extra effort that people voluntarily invest in work. When trust exists in a company or in a relationship, almost everything else is easier and more comfortable to achieve. A manager will not get top performance out of any employee who does not trust him. Without the employees' trust managers will not get thatspark of creativity from them that is so important. Employees will not innovate that one little idea that could have kept a company ahead of its competitor.Yet, even in a company in which trust is a priority, things happen daily that can injure trust. Trust is the crucial ingredient of organisational effectiveness.Building it, maintaining it, and restoring it when it is damaged must be at the top of every manager¿s agenda. Trust is not a matter of technique, but of character; managers are trusted because of their way of being, not because of their polished exteriors or their expertly crafted communications. Gaining employees trust is about telling the truth, even when it is difficult, and being truthful, authentic. Of course, there are no fixed rules of how to gain trust from your employees. But there are some easy but important guidelines that help managers creating a business environment where trust has the chance to build and maintain.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 52 pp. Englisch.

Today, Starbucks, named after the first mate in Herman Melville¿s Moby Dick, is the world¿s leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee with millions of customer visits per week at stores in North America, Europe, Middle East, Latin America and the Pacific Rim.Thus, within not more than three decades, Starbucks¿ offering of distinctive blend of quality coffee, neighbourly camaraderie and a unique coffeehouse culture combined with an aggressive growth strategy helped it to become the most famous specialty coffee shop chain in the world and a global company: In 2007, it run more than 15,000 stores worldwide by employing more than 172,000 people. But in the same year 2007 - despite revenues of USD 9.4 billion - Starbucks had to report a first-ever decline in same-store sales. As early as the mid-1990s, analysts had been predicting that Starbucks could not sustain such strong growth, especially in same-store sales. For more than 10 years, Starbucks had consistently beaten these expectations. By 2007, however, Starbucks unprecedented size, combined with the uncertainty of the economy, had placed the company in a new competitive game.As a result, in early 2008, Starbucks announced a series of initiatives to cope with the new challenges and to prepare for a successful future ¿ all of them based on renewing the focus on customer experience and slowing down expansion. But what constitutes the Starbucks strategy that has been that successful in the past What were the main drives of the considerably growth of the Starbucks business And is the Starbucks strategy flexible enough to adapt to the current challenging market conditions After the introduction of the Starbucks business in terms of vision, mission and history, this assignment focuses on answering these questions by analysing Starbucks¿ strategy and its key drivers of success in chapter 2. This analysis is done with the model of the ¿strategic diamond¿ that is introduced in the beginning of chapter 2 as working basis. The assignment ends a comprehensive analysis of the challenges Starbucks is facing today and how it prepares to successful handle them.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 52 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: Marketing, language: English, abstract: Due to strong competition and a continuous market change, most companies engage in strategic planning today to become or stay competitive in the long run.Strategy is all-embracing. Strategy has to capture internal and external aspects, that means to comprise competencies and market opportunities. Strategy has to keep in view the own company, the customers and the competitors. The challenge is to create customer values and competitive advantages to assure benefits and growth. As a result, the starting point of every strategic decision demonstrates the recognition and the analysis of the company¿s current situation containing a high variety of parameters. These parameters are generally defined by the company¿s influence into internal and external parameters. However, the understanding of the company¿s situation is only defined in absolute by analysing parameters and its bilateral dependencies. Therefore, the combination of the company¿s internal factors and the external environmental circumstances presents the basis for the strategy development and the resulting organisational marketing goals and application of the marketing instruments. The SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of a company. It provides information that is helpful in matching the company¿s resources and capabilities to the competitive environment in which it operates. The resulting SWOT matrixcontrasts the results of the internal analysis (strengths and weakness) and the external analysis (opportunities and threats) to define strategic fields of action. That application of a SWOT analysis is therefore instrumental in strategy formulation and selection.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 48 pp. Englisch.

In line with this paper, dual tracking only refers to the choice between M&A and IPO in later stages of the selling process. In spite of an increasing number of major dual tracks, the idea is still widely unknown. In particular the scholastic world has rarely picked up this subject. This lack of academic research motivates toexplore the concept in more detail. Thereby, the focus lies on the choice between M&A and IPO and on the interaction between the equity market and the M&A market. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1.3, University of Regensburg, language: English, abstract: Cryptographic algorithms have nowadays serious impact on many fields of modern life. A goodexample is the SSL technology, that consists of both symmetric as well as asymmetric cryptography. It is used in thousands of websites like online banking websites to secure transfered data. For the developers of such applications the performance of employing cryptography may be a crucial factor to the success of the complete product. Normally a software developer utilizes cryptographic operations by the usage of precast cryptographic libraries. Therefore, it is interesting to analyze the speed of cryptographic libraries which implement abstract cryptographic algorithms. In the following, we describe our benchmarking of various cryptoalgorithms in different cryptolibraries in different languages on a 32-bit system. In the first part, we outline our preparatory work and our considerations on setting up a fitting benchmarking environment. With this test environment we conducted the benchmarking of seven JAVA cryptolibraries, namely SUN-JCE, Flexiprovider, Bouncy Castle, Cryptix Crypto, IAIK-JCE, GNU crypto and RSA JSafe. Additionally, we benchmarked RSA BSafe, a cryptographic library, which is written in C++, to isolate the influence of the JAVA virtual machine abstraction layer on cryptographic performance. In the second part, we present a condensed illustration of the benchmarking results and our interpretation, for symmetric cryptography, asymmetric cryptography, the generation of hash based massage authentication codes and digital signatures. These results reveal remarkable differences in speed between the algorithms as well as between the different implementations. Also the choice of the underlying operating system has influence on the execution speed of the cryptographic code. In this work we demonstrated that software developers could gain a multiple of the execution speed of the cryptography utilizing parts of their programs just by a wise selection of cryptographic algorithms and libraries. Furthermore our work can help as a guideline for developing a generic benchmarking model for cryptoalgorithms.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 52 pp. Englisch.
