Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2007 in the subject History - World History - Early and Ancient History, grade: 1,0, Hawai'i Pacific University, course: Introduction to Greco-Roman Civilization, language: English, abstract: 19th century historians such as Edith Hamilton believed that Classical Athens was an ideal society of ¿law and freedom, truth and religion, beauty and goodness¿ (Wiesner et al. 127). However, not all historical evidence supports this opinion, and it has to be taken care about the intentions and contexts of each literary evidence. Some might be realistic approaches, others might convey idealized or even purely ideal viewpoints. This essay intends to examine the ideal conceptions which Pericles, Aristotle, and Xenophon set forth for the individual, the household and thegovernment; also, these views will be compared and contrasted with more realistic descriptions such as The Melian Debate, the opinion of an unknown author about Athenian Democracy and the purely idealistic view that Plato argues for. Furthermore, it will be attempted to establish a connection between the written sources and depictions of archaeological findings.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Examination Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Würzburg, course: Englische Literaturwissenschaft, language: English, abstract: ¿There was an awful rainbow once in heaven:/ We know her woof, her texture; she isgiven/ In the dull catalogue of common things./ Philosophy will clip an Angel¿swings,/ Conquer all mysteries by rule and line,/ Empty the haunted air, and gnomedmine ¿/ Unweave a rainbow¿ (Keats 320f).In December 1917, Keats attended Benjamin Haydon¿s ¿immortal dinner¿during which Charles Lamb accused Haydon of including Newton¿s head in hispainting ¿Christ¿s Entry in Jerusalem¿ (cf. Dawkins 38f). This painting wasaccording to Lamb, an affront since Isaac Newton ¿had destroyed all the poetry ofthe rainbow by reducing it to the prismatic colours¿ (Dawkins 39). Keats agreed withLamb that a man like Newton would ¿reduc[e] life to physical organization¿(Gigante 442) and therefore bereave the world of its wonders. In 1919, Keats beganwriting Lamia in which he took up the subject of the difficult relationship betweenscience and literature. The initial quotation promotes the assumption that in Lamiascience is seen as something that strips poetry (and the arts in general) of its ¿beautyand mystery¿ (Abrams 307). By ¿unweav[ing] the rainbow¿ (Keats/Cook 321) SirIsaac Newton had presumably destroyed the mysterious nature of the rainbow bymeans of rationalism as one then knows about its ¿woof, [its] texture¿ (Keats 320).However, one can find ambiguous details in Lamia that put Keats¿ position inquestion. Under Apollonius¿ eyes (Apollonius stands for reason and the urge todefine everything (Sandy 53)) Lamiäs beauty vanishes and she becomes a serpentagain. It could be argued that Apollonius saved Lycius (who is seen as a dreamer anda fantasist) from the sinful and evil snake, rather than depriving him of his lover.Although it might at first seem obvious that Keats is clearly emphatically sidingagainst the scientific position, against reason, this view turns out to be reductive (cf.Midgley 55). Hence, even in Keats¿ poetry, which primarily demonizes science andthe scientific progress, hints can be found that science is not that devilish after all.The hypothesis that Keats¿ view on science was not as exclusively negative as mostcommonly assumed is further supported by the fact that Keats had studied at Guy¿sHospital and was licensed to work as an apothecary (Keats/Cook xxxi). In himselfKeats internalises the difficult relationship of science and literature.[.].…

In himselfKeats internalises the difficult relationship of science and literature.[.] 60 pp. Englisch.…

Ideally chances to influence officials should not depend on wealth of the interest group. However common ways to impact government decisions include professional lobbying (Rowbottom, 2010, p.79). Professional lobbyists are accused of influencing public policy formation for self-serving purposes by means of not only knowledge transfer but also offering financial support to the targeted government official or political party. Government officials choose which people to meet with and receive advice from. This subjective choice gives varying opportunities that result in decision-making power to different interest groups (Rowbottom, 2010, p. 78). The public's confidence in how public policies are being formatted has been shaken by repeated reports on lobbyist's corruption. In recent years the regulation of lobbying has become a major challenge for modern liberal democracies world-wide. Democracies, relying on trust and support of their citizenry are threatened to loose legitimacy due to professional lobbying. The question this paper examines is in how far lobbying needs to be recognized as an indicator for democratic governance and whether it is measurable as such. At first characteristics and the scope of lobbying shall be defined to provide the necessary framework for further discussion of the topic. Second, when assessing democratic governance empirical measures for indicators are essential components of analysis. Therefore the measurability of lobbying shall be addressed in the second part of the paper. Third, approaches to regulate lobbyist profession to ensure higher levels of democratic governance shall be examined. Lastly, the case of the European Union shall be analyzed to exemplify successes and loop-holes of the existing regulatory measures and conclude about the importance of lobbying as an indicator when examining the democratic process. 12 pp. Englisch.…

It will be examined why the physically potentially dangerous and aggressive Sun Dance was practiced in some tribes and why the Plains Indians as well as some Native Americans today identify with the ritual. Showing that the customs are far from being merely pointless and brutal, the paper reveales the messages that Sun Dance - or Body Suspension rituals try to convey. Due the large number of existing Plains Indians tribes, the paper restricts the investigations to only two tribes of North America, that is, to the Arapaho and the Cherokees. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Psychology - Methods, Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH, language: English, abstract: 1990-2000 was declared by the US Congress to be the 'Decade of the Brain'. With projects like the Human Brain Project and the American answer of the BRAIN Initiative recently in the news for the millions they received in funding, it appears evident that neuroscience has captured public attention. But those working within the field have begun to notice an alarming new trend. Every other day it appears that there is a new flavor of neuroscience. There is Neuroethology, Neurolinguistics, Paleoneurology, Cultural Neuroscience, Neuroeconomics, and the list goes on. Neuroscience is becoming full of these specialized niches of inquiry. The logic behind these specialties is that since everything comes from the brain, everything can be reduced to a neuroscientific argument eventually. In general, too much specification within in science can be bad. Scientists have the tendency to create categories in the world and put certain phenomena into boxes that are realms of study. Thus, there is chemistry, which is distinct from biology, which is distinct from psychology. It is easy to see that in reality there are no clear lines of what makes a problem a chemical, biological or psychological one and that to truly understand a problem it must be viewed from all levels. However, this fact is easily forgotten and scientists often find themselves trapped looking at a problem only through their personal science's paradigm. This categorization can lead to scientists forgetting the context of a problem which can actually influence and determine the nature of an issue all together (Barrett, Mesquita, & Smith, 2010). But this tendency to essentialism is not the main issue why the number of neurosciences should be constrained. It is impossible to say how many are needed exactly, but at present the number is far too high. Neuroscience is a new science that few people truly understand which makes it easy to abuse and it does not have the tools or ability yet to branch out too far beyond the individual brain. 16 pp. Englisch. …

It will come if it is there and if you will let it come. (Gertrude Stein)Gertrude Stein has been an extraordinary person in many respects: it is not only her biographical background that is impressing and which shows what a strong and self-confident woman she was, such as her foundation of the American Fund for French Wounded during the First World War. Also by her work Tender Buttons, written in 1914, she has successfully created an entirely new kind of literature. Yet her playful, but at the same time not immediately understandable way of writing is considered as hermetic, being pretty difficult to read. This is why Sprigge writes that '[b]oth as artist and as woman Gertrude Stein has always been a subject of controversy. Ridiculed on the one hand she is acclaimed on the other as the creator of a literary style that has set its mark in twentiethcentury prose and poetry.' (xiii). This style has largely been influenced by cubist painting and her friendship with Pablo Picasso. Tender Buttons is thus of course an homage to him, and there are many similarities between cubism and Stein's writing. However, it is the aim of this essay to point out both in what way the art movement contributed to her work, and how she is at the same time able to overcome this male tradition by stepping away and changing it. 16 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Discussion and Essays, grade: A, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, course: English , language: English, abstract: Many lives continue to glow brightly as they journey on throughout the course of their existence. It is in these lives, that we are exposed to the joys and wonders of the world through the subjective interpretation of our own experiences. Pivotal decisions are made everyday which continually dictate the opportunities available to us. Yet one question remains unclear, who makes these decisions Naturally, many people believe that these decisions are our own to make. This belief, referred to as 'free will,' implies that we have a conscious choice between one option and numerous alternatives. The ability to make a decision based on these circumstances implies that the mind is free. Alternatively, the less popular view of determinism suggests that we have no free will; decisions are made based on an antecedent casual chain of events. In other words, before choices are presented a decision is already made, or pre-determined, and cannot be deviated from. In this regard, the mind is preconditioned based on experiences, genetics, and other factors. In essence, the mind is not free.Following these views, it should not come as a surprise that free will, often synonymous with freedom, is regarded more reputably. However, this belief is unsupported by empirical evidence and neglects the surrounding factors that influence cognitive processes. In other words, a broad spectrum of circumstances, both past and present, influences behavior and opportunities. By adopting a determinist perspective, people will learn to see beyond the surface of what is available to them. It is with this that a deeper understanding of context and casual factors, which influence behavior and events, can be used to decipher the world around us. By achieving this new outlook, people will be capable of joining an elite esoteric group which provides a foundation for awareness, understanding, and growth.'Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect as well as the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper' (Albert Einstein). 12 pp. Englisch.…
