Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Martin Luther University, language: English, abstract: ¿The Lost Generation¿ is a term which encompasses a broad range of American authors who were born around 1900. Amongst those litterateurs are many who are said to be among the most influential and important writers in the history of American letters. This term paper shall examine what historical circumstances constituted the ¿common adventures¿ and ¿common attitudes¿ of that generation as reflected in Fitzgerald¿s novel The Great Gatsby. The term ¿The Lost Generation¿ was given by Gertrude Stein, an authoress of note and contemporary of both Fitzgerald and Hemingway, who used her quotation: ¿you are all a lost generation,¿ as the epigraph for his novel The Sun Also Rises. What is meant by the attribute ¿lost¿ Why was this dismal term applied to the young adults of the 1920s ¿ an era of prosperity and freedom in America How did Fitzgerald depict this ¿lost¿ world in The Great Gatsby, with respect to material abundance on the one hand versus spiritual poverty on the other The zeitgeist of an era inevitably shapes the human beings who live in it: how they act, what they look like, and what they think the meaning of their lives in particular and humanity in general might be. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the 1920s in America in order to understand fully the meaning Fitzgerald communicates in The Great Gatsby. This paper will therefore investigate several characteristics of the decade which are relevant for the interpretation of the novel. The parameters to be surveyed are: society in general; the materialism, wealth and industrialization which created that society; Prohibition as one of the most significant elements of the 20s; the faltering faith in God (as but one example of the failure of institutions that were supposed to be a refuge for human beings); and the loss of faith in the American dream and other treasured ideals. These issues will be analyzed in consideration of The Great Gatsby and the question of how Fitzgerald uses them as tropes for his social criticism of the so called Jazz Age.The paper will be based on a number of monographs and anthologies dealing with the major American writers and literature of the 1920s as well as the historical context that shaped their literary vision. The particular focus will be on Fitzgerald¿s seminal novel, The Great Gatsby, as it incorporates and inflects the major historical and literary themes of its time.

Neuware - Essay aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Kultur und Landeskunde, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: From the mid-19th century on, the hitherto largely male dominated US-American society felt compelled to face the first wave of feminism, which united women in their fight for equality. Although women had contributed a great deal to the colonization of the USA, they had not been granted the civil right to vote in national and local elections until the passage of the 19th amendment to the Constitution in 1920, which stated that 'the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex' (National Archives and Records Administration). At a time when the US saw themselves confronted with major social and economic changes, among others caused by the industrialization, the influence of science (e.g. Dar-win's revolutionary theory of evolution, transportation by means of the first continental railroad completed in 1869) gender specific role models were affected, too. As these de-velopments caused feelings of insecurity in many people, much importance was attached to the own home, which was seen as a haven of security amidst social and economic turmoil (Shanley 3).The making of a stereotype like that of the 'Victorian Lady' or the 'Southern Lady' can be seen as an attempt to create a solid authority in a time of radical changes. The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 posed a challenge to the Protestant Americans as the life-style of the Catholic Creoles differed greatly from the ones in the rest of the US. The be-liefs - comprising, amongst others, religious ones - and values of the Creole community were met with rejection and were sometimes described as un-American.

It establishes a historical and cultural context with which these different policy approaches have evolved and notes the various utilities and insufficiencies of each. Common diplomatic obstacles that have previously thwarted attempts at improving conditions within North Korea will also be highlighted, as these challenges are likely to have a continued effect on the future prospects of reunification. This paper also examines the vastly negative economic and sociological implications of reunifying the two Koreas, as this has resulted in a strong political incentive to maintain the status quo. A body of research will be drawn upon to establish the most economically viable method for reunification to address these issues. Finally, the purpose of this paper is to incorporate all of the topics examined to propose a pragmatic and viable solution to the issues that stand in the way of a reunified Korea. 20 pp. Englisch.

This quotation illustrates the problem of the classification of the English tense system on which the focus of this paper will be based. Although linguists' knowledge of the tense system has increased over the years, the problem is that, as Robin Lakoff wrote, they 'cannot account for many ways in which tenses are used in English' (Binnick 1991: vii). Therefore, English tense(s) have not yet been understood completely. By comparing different authors and frameworks, this paper will present different approaches to the English tense system. The aim is not to provide a perfect solution to all answers but to introduce different viewpoints and to go a step beyond the common conceptualization of the English language by presenting competing theories. 16 pp. Englisch.

During the Ottoman period, majority of the people were living an Islamic lifestyle under the guidance of traditional Islamic shari'a law. This situation was challenging to the modern, secular ideas of the young republic. In order to overcome this problem, the new secular state controlled religious affairs and abolished the institution of Caliphate. Morever, founders of the modern Turkey created a National Assembly and which served as the early steps to the representative democracy. There were series of reforms on the education, military system, women's rights and general dress code for public places. However, although Ataturk and his friends' contribution to the Turkish modernization is undeniable, it should be made clear that his ideas were inspired both by the realities of his time and more importantly the reforms of the late Ottoman period. Thus, contrary to what primary level education which is taught in state schools in Turkey suggests, it is hard to claim that he singlehandedly invented all the ideas and reforms concerning the Turkish modernization. In fact, the idea of Turkish modernization long predates the foundation of the secular republic. There had been reforms from top to down during the nineteenth century. These were followed by a new group of intellectuals who were influenced by the ideas of Enlightenment and French Revolution who were called 'Young Turks'. The Young Turk movement, which was emerged among the students of higher learning schools of Istanbul attracted many other members of the society. The members of the movement were united in their opposition to the personal rule of the Sultan and created the backbone of the modern democratic reforms happened during early years of the modern Turkish Republic (Hanioglu, 2011). 20 pp. Englisch.

One may consider it as an botched attempt to gain sovereignty and disparage it to be an uprising that was senseless and doomed to failure in advance, others view it as a symbol of Irish martyrdom and as an insurgence that was anything but useless. Advocates claim that the Easter Rising was necessary to exercise pressure onto the British usurpators. They state that a military uprising like this, even if there was less prospect of success, showed Westminster that there could not be any long- term peace in Ireland without dealing with the question of home rule. Opponents argue that Irish rebels caused the loss of lives of innocent people by fighting a war that was at this time not backed up by the common Irish people, and that in the end they themselves are to be blamed for the casualties and devastation the fights demanded. Supporters reply that the insurrection was the first step to a free state of Ireland, that it stirred nationalism in the minds of the Catholics of the Island and that it was a milestone on the way to the republic. Whatever scholars think of it, it is a matter of fact that this event is one of the most commemorated incidents in Ireland. Countless erected monuments and installed plates at places all over the Island reminisce of the losses and sacrifices of the 1916 rebels. They are called patriots who fought, outnumbered and starved, for a holy aim and who had to submit to ruthless soldiers, sent by an illicit and tyrannous foreign government. Therefore the uprising prevails in the mind of the Irish people, bolstered up by songs, poems or parades and days of commemoration. This paper shall examine the circumstances right before the outbreak of the rising, its preparation and the course of events within it. Furthermore it intends to show in what way the British restored their power and how they responded to the open violence. The paper is supposed to try to display what aftermaths the Easter Rising actually had and if there was any sense in this adventure that was apparently doomed to failure in advance. Another point is concerned with the reflection of the rebellion. If it is blamed to be another example of useless hatred, conducted by only few men of weird mind, or if it is viewed as a necessary act of freedom by heroes who sacrificed themselves on the altar of a free Ireland. 20 pp. Englisch.

By then little was known about the pathological implications such an act of war would have on the Japanese civilian victims. The weapons had barely been tested before deployment and the potential consequences of the radioactive fallout were not yet fully understood. The first practical use of the bomb together with all its casualties initiated a future policy of deterrence. It was apparent what can happen if you go to war with a nuclear power. Still, no other nuclear weapon has ever since been deployed as an act of war. In this research paper I will analyze the Duck and Cover propaganda short issued by the Federal Civil Defense Administration in the early 1950s as the primary source. I will focus on the content of the episode, its structural and cinematic means, and its desired and achieved affects toward its target audience. What were the reasons and goals behind this far-fetched and committed civil defense operation Is it seen as an outspoken domestic act out of moral obligation from the government that comes with the responsibility of being a nuclear power Was the nuclear fallout - which the film thoroughly neglects as a danger - really not known to the government at this point in time or was this knowledge deliberately held from the public This last question defines greatly the core meaning of the film in historical terms. Eventually it determines whether Duck and Cover was merely a naïve piece of safety education or just a good excuse for conditioning a whole generation (as well as its parents) to the ideological challenges of the forthcoming decades of the Cold War. This humble paper alone cannot answer all these questions but rather build a basis for extended research on the topic. Sources indicate that in government circles the secondary dangers that emanate from a nuclear blast like radioactive fall-out were at least partially known if not already scientifically proven at the time. The question about the decision to keep such knowledge from the broad public goes beyond the primary analysis this paper can provide. 16 pp. Englisch.

First of all, an overview over the historical background will be given, showing the economic importance of the slave trade at the end of the 18th century, as well as giving an outline of the con-temporary major race theories, that were underlying its justification. The movement for the abolition of slavery will be introduced, as well as some of their representa-tives, like Thomas Clarkson, or William Cowper. Subsequently, the main part of the paper will deal with William Blake and his poem 'Little Black Boy'. The piece will be taken as an example for 18th century abolitionist literature and will be analysed, with the help of secondary literature by Hazard Adams, D.G. Gillham, David Erdman and Lauren Henry. A special focus will be on the poem's religious theme. The term paper will end with a conclusion, summarizing the interpretations of the before-mentioned literary scientists and evaluating the significance of the paper's findings. 20 pp. Englisch.

Furthermore the development of different theories from the first structuralist approaches in the 1930s to the more recent approaches of cognitive semantics and the frame theory will be outlined. In the second part, the paper will cover the topic of syntagmatic relations of word meanings, namely collocations. The term will be defined and examples will be mentioned, before dealing with the important concepts of 'statistically significant' and 'institutionalized collocations'. Finally there will be a demarcation to the phenomenon of idioms, before the term paper finishes with a conclusion about the whole topic. 16 pp. Englisch.

Promoting human development requires addressing sustainability- locally, nationally and globally- and this can and should be done in ways that are equitable and empowering. On the need for financing the human development, we observe that even the best macroeconomic policies may fail unless they are complemented by effective policies -policies that link the macro and the micro level and that bear directly on people live. Chief among these are the level and structure of government social expenditures and the design of the policy measures and programmes they support. The present paper tries to make a study on the financing of human development in India. The entire paper is divided into four parts. The first part is introductory which gives a brief account of the basic concept of human development and the various measures through which financing of human development could be observed. The second part of the paper talks about the trends in HDI in India vis-à-vis some of developed and developing countries. The third segment discusses about the trends in India's social sector expenditure as it affects the major dimensions of inclusive development like poverty alleviation, employment generation, health, education, and social welfare. The last section of the paper is given to concluding observations. 20 pp. Englisch.

The primary way that Congress has performed this function with regard to science is through the enactment of the Patent Act and the creation of the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) to administer application of the act.Recent decades have seen a great expansion in the amount and importance of research in the life sciences and their applied counterparts, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Coinciding with this expansion is an expansion of the role of the Federal Government in producing and regulating these areas of research and technology. This expansion has seen both PTO and the Federal Courts develop regulations and standards within the patent system that are focused on the particularities of biotechnology and the development of patent-like awards outside of the patent system. This expansion has also seen the Federal Government become the largest funder of research in the life sciences at the same time as it relinquishes ownership of the resulting intellectual property. More recently, antitrust authorities have begun to impose demands that intellectual property rights in biotechnology be divested in certain mergers. Through all of these policies, the Federal Government has involved regulatory agencies beyond the traditional PTO to further the traditional goal of PTO, to encourage innovation in science, and in biotechnology in particular. In many cases, it is far from obvious if an utterance is meant ironical or not. Context and world knowledge are needed to discriminate literal from ironic intent.Linguists have worked on describing the nature of irony and come up with ideas which reflect the intuitive understanding of irony.Parallely, computational linguists are confronted with the challenge of automatically detecting irony. When an utterance contains irony, the only chance of getting the intent, is understanding and interpreting the irony in it.I review different theories of irony in chapter 2.Chapter 3 describes the state-of-the-art of automatic irony detection, covers the importance of corpus study for future research and proposes a fusion between theory, corpus study and automatic detection. 36 pp. Englisch.

However, what is meantand covered by this term which is used so often to refer to speech errors Does its universalitysuggest that all tongue slips are of the same kind If not, how can they be distinguished This term paper will try to give a more detailed categorization of speech anomalies, firstproviding a definition what is generally seen as a slip of the tongue. It will be shown, whowere the first linguists to examine this topic and what discoveries were made.In order to give an own precise classification of speech errors, different approaches formain categorizations will be presented and taken into consideration. On the basis of thesemain categories, further sub-categories are elaborated and illustrated with examples given bydifferent authors in order to explain every feature appropriately. Since many authors still notagree upon a common sub-classification, this term paper will select the most suitable termsand definitions, try to compromise about the most common ones and give suggestions forfurther distinctions. To be conforming to the majority of the literature, the most commonterminology shall be used. However, if provided terms are inappropriate or imprecise, theywill be modified. The types of speech errors will be ordered via the main class they belong to. They will bepresented as sub-classes, defined, explained and illustrated by examples in detail. Examplesare marked with ordinals. The incorrect utterance is always presented with an asterisk andfollowed by the proper realization in brackets. The pronunciation of the slips is written ingraphemes, i.e. normally written words, as far as this is possible to convey the mistake. Whereno written equivalent can be found, square brackets will be used for the transcription of thespeech error. After all issues of one main category have been elaborated, rules and general remarkswhich apply to all of them will be stated. Finally, this term paper concludes which problems may occur when classifying slips of thetongue and provide an outlook about what speech errors reveal about the speech productionprocess, the inner human lexicon and language universals.
