The ¿appreciative¿ of our neighbours, their savoir vivre and the food traditions exert a big fascination on other countries. Their distinctive culture marked the French stereotype particularly and has worldwide left strong impressions.Today, it would seem that most of the French population believes itself lofty and superior in the world. By other nations in fact, with an ironic undertone there is often spoken of France as the 'Grande Nation'. As opposed to the idea at the beginning, the French are habitually perceived as arrogant, nationalistic and elitist. In the scope of this seminar paper, it subsequently will be necessary to evaluate especially this custom to its verisimilitude and as a result, one will be able to give a response to the question: ¿How to avoid being the ugly French ¿ 36 pp. Englisch.

They talked about the fact that there was always a new plan, and (.) that was going to win the day. And they believed it just as much as we're believing it sitting around the table this morning. I can tell you, however, that in the end, there was a great disillusion. And there will be one.¿ - George Ball, 1971In spite of the advice given to him by his Under Secretary of State, George Ball, United States President Lyndon B. Johnson decided on the 27th July 1965 to push ahead and increase military forces from 75,000 to 125,000 in Vietnam. With this decision, Johnson escalated the American intervention in Vietnam and made what has been seen as the ¿formal decision for a major war¿ . The inability and, to an extent unwillingness, to foresee that the conflict was going to be as catastrophic as it turned out to be is what lead Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defence, to say that the Johnson administration¿s ¿greatest failure of all was Vietnam.¿ It was not until April 1975 and then under President Gerald Ford that the United States would finally withdraw from Vietnam, following a defeat of the South Vietnamese forces and a reunification of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Pham Van Dong. With approximately 58,000 American casualties, not to mention the estimated 1,5 million Vietnamese killed, this military intervention continues to be seen as a sore point of American history .BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Politics - Region: Other States, grade: 1, Macquarie University, language: English, abstract: When speaking about democracy one has to be careful to distinguish between its two key areas: direct democracy and representative democracy. Direct democracy is largely associated with self-government of the people in ancient Greece. This Athenian democracy is something which, as population of states grew, was increasingly difficult to sustain. In, for example, Australia with a population of 19 million people direct self-rule which implies ¿time-consuming and unwieldy procedures¿, with the likely effect of paralysing and not enhancing governmental decision-making processes, is largely unthinkable. Hence, today in the 21st century when one speaks of democracies what is largely meant is a representative democracy. Although remnants of direct democracy remain in aspects such as referendums, generally voters hand over their power in regular elections to representatives to rule on their behalf. The emergence of the internet has inspired many critics to believe that it can be the answer to overcoming what they see as the temporary solution of representative democracies. They believe that the new media, the internet, will lead to a future in which ¿major policy decisions can be instigated, formulated, and decided by direct democracy.¿Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

For as long as I can remember I have heard friends and family say to me: ¿David, you are so hard on yourself!¿ It wasn¿t until I began my own psychotherapeutic work that I was able to see the truth in these claims and to concern myself with how to dampen the Critic¿s voice. Of great surprise and interest to me was the discovery that at the root of healing Inner Critic wounding is critical compassion: the instrument of self-compassion. Taking a historical view of psychology it is possible to argue that the root of the concept of the Inner Critic lies in the work of Jung and is related, although not the same as Jung¿s concept of the Shadow. Young-Eisendrath and Dawson (2008, p.98) write of ¿ that unwelcome side of our nature that Jung calls the shadow. This is made up of all the tendencies, motives and characteristics that we have barred from consciousness, whether deliberately or not. The admission of the shadow is the sine qua non of individuation.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, course: 19th Century Women Writers I: the Brontës, language: English, abstract: The character of Catherine Earnshaw is one of the most complex and fascinating in world literature. Her story is that of a young woman who ¿betrays her deepest self and so destroys herself¿ but whose love is so strong that not even death can extinguish it. Readers cannot help but be moved by her fate, even though she appears to be a thoroughly unpleasant person in more than just one respect. They are forced to pity her, even though they feel they have every reason to believe that it is her, and her alone, who is to blame for the misery that befalls her. And, worst of all, they see her suffering and dying, but at the same time they cannot help envying her ability to feel as strongly as she does. These confusing and seemingly contradictory impressions have led many critics of the novel to describe Catherine using terms like ¿creature of another species, hysterical, savage or demonic¿ out of a sheer inability to make anything else of her, anything that they could understand. In this paper, I shall attempt to determine whether these ¿otherwordly¿ terms that reek of madness and hell are really necessary or whether it might not be possible to do without them and see Catherine simply as a young woman in a very 18th/19th-century dilemma, a girl who marries the wrong man and ends up heartbroken.I will begin by attempting a characterization of Catherine and then introducing her author, Emily Brontë, to have a closer look at the world and the mind that Catherine is rooted in.Finally I will try to discover the true nature of Catherine¿s dilemma and whether all these aspects will make it possible to demystify Catherine and return her to the state of a human being.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, , language: English, abstract: It is predictable to find the term tragic when discussing the marriage between two poets, Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath. This sense of tragedy is often expressed as relating to human emotions of sadness. In The Birth of Tragedy, however, Nietzsche uses the term to discuss attic tragedy, or also known as ancient Greek drama. Nietzsche sets forth the concept of the Apollonian and Dionysian duality, and the perpetual strife between these two opposite forces can be applied to other aesthetic inquiries. Most understandably, the method of looking at the two poets should be our priority in discussing their poetry. In order to incorporate Nietzsche¿s aesthetic framework, we must dispel the view of Plath as a confessional poet while inspecting some of Hughes¿ consistent poetic techniques. Although the two poets find common ground on some of their style and themes, Plath and Hughes can be distinguished based on their approach to their poems. In light of Nietzsche¿s view of tragic forces, Hughes is revealed as driven mainly through Apollonian sense of craft while Plath embodies the Dionysian spirit in her poems.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 16 pp. Englisch.

The disintegration of the Warsaw Pact along with the interior social, economic and political problems in the GDR are examined as long term causes as well as the influence of the media, the church and the citizens of the GDR themselves as main players in the short term. Additionally, the immediate events in the beginning of November 1989 are scrutinized in connection with the Fall of the Wall. The research question in two parts is whether the events around the 9th of November, 1989, can be labelled ¿peaceful revolution¿ and what the causes for that revolution are. What is the historical significance of the event and what was it derived from Consistent with the primary and secondary sources used, the essay concludes that the Fall of the Wall was indeed a peaceful revolution. Examining the development towards pluralism and democracy by the USSR and her satellite states as the foundation for that revolution, the essay scrutinizes both the work of the media with its fuelling effect and the actions of the church as a ¿replacement public¿ as causes for the incident. The state with its restrictive forces impaling every aspect of public life producing social, economic as well as political disadvantages for its citizens is the reason for opposition developing. Encountering this opposition, the party looses control over the people and misses a historical chance. Instead of selling the Fall of the Berlin Wall as a sovereign decision for empowerment of the GDR¿s citizens it has to watch how the means of isolating them from foreign influences is dismantled. Therefore the significance of the 9th of November 1989 lying in the irreversible loss of power and control by the SED was initiated by the party itself.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

It tries to shed light into the paradox of an unequal and ineffective health care system on the one hand and strong resistance against any type of reform on the other. Major obstacles in the legislative process, such as the Republican Party and the impact of interest groups, are examined. It should become clear that the neo-liberal ideal of a free market coined by many Republicans, was an important obstacle to Obamäs health care reform. Neuware -Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Cultural Studies - Basics and Definitions, grade: 1,33, Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH, language: English, abstract: Over the last decades, the rise of Social Capital as a central field of research in Social Science has contributed to an increasingly controversial and in-depth debate about trust. In particular, the identification of valid predictors for trust has been widely discussed, entailing various theories and outcomes. In the context of this course, this paper focuses on one specific predictor for trust, which has been generally accepted, namely the degree of diversity. Many scholars have applied this relationship of diversity and trust, yet by using very diverse definitions of what they understand by diversity. This paper seeks at filling this gap of lacking conceptual clarification in terms of measuring diversity. We aim at answering the question whether or not the diversity measure has a significant impact on trust as the dependent measurement variable, and if so, which diversity variable matters most. For this research, we combine three papers related to the research question. Alesina et al. (2003) have presented a more comprehensive overview of diversity by introducing three different measures (ethnic, linguistic, and religious). Secondly, Fearon (2003) contributed to the topic through the refinement of the ethnic diversity measures, and the development of two indicators, ethnic and cultural fractionalization. Furthermore, he divided his large sample of countries into six world regions, a typology which we will also use in our study in order to identify possible peculiarities according to a certain region. We will combine the three measures by Alesina et al. (2003) and the two by Fearon (2003) and correlate those five independent variables with the dependent variable ¿trust¿ on a country level, whose scores are taken from Bjørnskov (2008). The stronger the correlation, the more relevant we interpret the respective independent variable for trust. Moreover, we introduce viable controlling variables in order to eliminate external influences. After the already described screening for regional specialties, we finally execute a linear regression which would further explore the relationships between our variables of interest. We will argue on the basis of our findings that the diversity measure matters, in particular that ethnic fractionalization has the strongest impact on generalized social trust.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Under the central question: can Risk Management be successful concerning the reduction of the people¿s Risk Perception of nuclear energy and nuclear accidents it was attempted to find a first answer based on the analysis of newspaper articles and books. Thereby the role of the media and the psychology of the people is kept in mind.Although the accident in Chernobyl happened already 22 years ago, it left a lasting mark on the people¿s perception of the safety of nuclear energy and nuclear power in general. The problems arising in the context of managing these risks are highlighted as well as the question whether and how these problems, if applicable, can be solved. Although the people are aware of the risk and the danger in which they resort themselves, some people decide to choose the contaminated zone around Chernobyl as a tourist destination. This seems especially paradox, because of the fact that those people settle for a risk they would actually be afraid of in everyday life. There are various explanations for this behavior called 'Dark Tourism'. The examination of this phenomenon will conclude the paper.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

But does this difference also apply to language and talk 'Women talk more than men!¿ ¿ Everybody has already heard of the myth that women are more talkative and use 20,000 words a day, whereas men get by with just 7,000 (Talbot: 2003). However, this has been contradicted by the University of Texas ¿ there is no gender that is more talkative. Moreover, according to the studies, women speak on average 16,215 words and men 15,669 words a day (Mehl et al.: 2007). Language starts in people¿s heads, but since the areas and sizes of the different brain parts in women¿s and men¿s heads are completely unequal it nevertheless is logical that male and female language differs. A female brain has its own relatively big ¿Gossip Lobe¿, whereas the male brain has only got a somewhat smaller ¿Guy Talk¿ area (see Fig. 1).According to the amount of research that has been conducted in this field there are major differences between male and female language. Tabloid newspapers and talk shows tend to suggest that women swear less than men or that women are the more gossipy gender. These assumptions are internalised by the vast majority of the population, but are they really true (Coates: 2004) Or is all that nonsense The German publishing group Langenscheidt published a dictionary with the title 'German¿Woman / Woman¿German¿ which has especially been created for men so that they can interpret women¿s messages correctly. The best way to control this problem in China are: (1) rehabilitation of tree plantation for complete desertification control, (2) improvement of the economic development system through: (i) economize in the use of resources; (ii) moderate exploitation of the resources; and (iii) environmental protection; and (3) providing measures that should be suited to local conditions such as irrigation system and forage farming system. 32 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Mathematics - Miscellaneous, printed single-sided, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Munich, language: English, abstract: This thesis is motivated by questions arising in the eld of Mathematical Quantum Electrodynamics, the attempt of a proper mathematical description of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). QED is the relativistic quantum eld theory of electrodynamics, which uni es Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity in a consistent manner. From the mathematical point of view, QED is an abelian gauge theory with the symmetry group U(1) (phase factors) and the gauge eld mediating the interaction between the charged spin-1/2 elds is the electromagnetic eld. Aim of this thesis is the renormalization of the regularized relativistic electron positron eld together with a Coulomb interaction. The idea of the renormalization procedure is to compare the normal-ordered Hamiltonian with the original one. Choosing a conventional normal ordering, the change in Hamiltonian is given by a quadratic term. The choice of a suitable normal ordering amounts in a non-perturbative rede nition of the electron/positron states. This allows for the interpretation of change in the Hamiltonian as a certain renormalization. The proper interpretation of this renormalization and the various implications are discussed at the end.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 40 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institut für Fremdsprachliche Philologien), course: Imagining the Nation: From the British Empire to Multicultural Britain, language: English, abstract: One of the most influential and well-known authors during the time of the British Empire and still today is without doubt Rudyard Kipling. Whether or not his political views can be agreed upon, he nevertheless represents a great part of English literature. He wrote numerous novels, short stories and poems and was even awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. (cf. Green 22) Along with this great success, however, came also a spate of criticism leading to an ¿ambivalent attitude towards the author and his work¿ (Gilbert: xvii). Herein lays the prominent reason for writing a paper on colonialism: in the controversial portray of Rudyard Kipling. Some authors like Henry James view him as ¿the most complete man of genius [to be] ever known¿ (159) whilst others see him as a ¿jingo imperialist [¿] morally insensitive and aesthetically disgusting¿ (Orwell 74). The majority of Kipling¿s work has been written during the peak times of the British Empire and takes same one as thematic playground. Kipling is said to have created ¿not only the best but almost the only literary picture [of Anglo-India].¿ (Orwell 82) and thus resemble a suitable foundation for analysis.Hence, it shall be examined what picture of Imperialism with particular reference to Indian colony and its inhabitants as subjects to the Royal government as well as the role of the English in India, is created in Rudyard Kipling¿s work. Is it really as Fabian Schefold proposes, that Kipling¿s writing is furnished with racist and imperialist ideas, presenting Britain as racial superior to India (cf. 59-60) Or is it as Edgar Mertner suggests, that Kipling was rather critic of the British rule in India considering it ¿a huge macabre joke¿ (145).BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

The use of massive amounts of toxic dispersants, which led the oil to disappear from the surface of the sea, in consequence also led to the slow but constant sickening of Gulf Coast residents and clean-up workers. The debate succeeding the incident is one of power, responsibility and construction of truth about the aftermath of the incident. Gulf Coast locals feel abandoned by the officials and the government. From their point of view, they don¿t seem willing to acknowledge their suffering from chemical poisoning with dispersed oil and the chemical ¿Corexit¿, which was used in massive amounts (ca. 6,8 million litres) by ¿British Petroleum¿ (BP) to dissolve the oil in the water column. A central question of the incident and its aftermath is therefore one of responsibility in a neoliberal society with neoliberal power structures.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Language vs. Culture A Comparison between Language and Music, language: English, abstract: Language and music¿-both can be found in every human society¿-are the most basic socio-cognitive domains of the human species. At first glance, they share fundamental similarities, such as being based on acoustic modalities and involving complex sound sequences. Language, as well as music, functions as a means of communication and a form of expression. Both systems are organized into hierarchically structured sequences, and a written system was developed for language and for music. The interest in music-language relations has a long history, of course, and does not originate with modern cognitive science: 'The topic has long drawn interest from a wide range of thinkers, including philosophers, biologists, poets, composers, linguists, and musicologists. Over 2,000 years ago, Plato claimed that the power of certain musical modes to uplift the spirit stemmed from their resemblance to the sounds of noble speech (Neubauer, 1986). Much later, Darwin (1871) considered how a form of communication intermediate between modern language and music may have been the origin of our species¿ communicative abilities. Many other historical figures have contemplated music-language relations, including Vincenzo Galilei (father of Galileo), Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. This long line of speculative thinking has continued down to the modern era (e.g., Bernstein, 1976). In the era of cognitive science, however, research into this topic is undergoing a dramatic shift, using new concepts and tools to advance from suggestions and analogies to empirical research.' (Cp. PATEL (2008): Music, Language, and the Brain)The production of music and language is a prime example of the human brain¿s capacities. But does the brain process music as it processes language Are language and music processed in the same hemisphere(s) Are linguistic and musical irregularities processed by the same brain area(s) What are the cognitive differences and similarities And how can brain activity be measured These and other very complex questions are to be approached in this seminar paper. The central interest is to explore and compare some of the structural and cognitive properties of language and music (and the links between them) in order to find out whether music is language-like in certain regards. The central questions are: Does music have something like a grammar or syntax Is music able to transfer meaningful information Chapter 2.1 examines the structural units (.)BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Ergonomics, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Chemnitz (Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften - Professur für Organisation und Arbeitswissenschaft), language: English, abstract: The text at hand deals with Max Weber¿s theory of bureaucracy and its negative consequences in Robert K. Merton¿s functional analysis. The starting point is the description of what Weber understands as rationalization and his conceptualization of the three types of legitimate domination. The purest and most rational type of legal domination is in Weber¿s eyes bureaucracy with its benefits of precision, calculability, controllability and efficiency ¿ in short, with its technical superiority. Weber¿s position concerning bureaucratization is ambivalent, because he also sees the negative consequences in dehumanization and excessive control, which ends in an ¿iron cage¿. Merton analysis outlines the dysfunctions resulting from bureaucratic structures. The negative consequences he identifies are the displacement of goals, the trained incapacity, over-conformity and esprit de corps of the officials and the depersonalization of relationships.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 36 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 1.3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: Each year, firms disclose information that is analyzed and eventually reflected in the market price. Sources of information are for example annual reports, earnings announcements and press releases. In the past, financial accounting research focused primarily on the numerical financial information disclosed (cf. Hales et al. 2011, 224).1 Interestingly, research showed that asset price movements could only partly be explained by this quantitative information and thus must have additional influencing factors (cf. Demers/Vega 2010, 2).Since corporate disclosure generally consists only to a small fraction of qualitative data and dominantly of textual information (cf. Li 2011, 1)2, and since language is the natural medium through which people communicate, financial accounting research started to focus on the analysis of textual disclosure (cf. Hales et al. 2011, 224). Results of these studies show that different aspects of textual disclosure, like the tone (how information is written/expressed) or the readability can influence for example market prices or analyst behavior (e.g. Li 2010 or Tetlock/Saar-Tsechansky/Macskassy 2008). This paper focuses on research in the field of tone as important characteristic of corporate textual disclosure. Its aim is to provide an overview about the most recent approaches and about challenges that researchers face. The remainder of this paper proceeds as follows. In section 2 the importance of textual analysis and the information content of textual information are discussed. Furthermore this section provides an overview about different approaches to characterize textual disclosure and a tabular classification of the recent literature. Since this paper focuses on the tone of textual disclosure, different approaches to measure tone are discussed as well. In section 3 two recent studies are discussed and section 4 concludes with a summary of the main results of this paper and gives suggestions for future research.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 40 pp. Englisch.

It was founded in 1948 with only eight employees by Willi Hess as a small metal foundry. Throughout the years the company has grown continuously and began producing street lighting in the seventies. In cooperation with architects and industrial designers the company oriented toward creation and production of sophisticated lighting concepts and developed to one of the world¿s leading manufacturers of decorative and architectural street and outdoor lighting. Hess makes his mark with outperforming technological and sustainable products and reference projects like the lighting concept of the Olympia Park in Beijing (Hess AG, 2010a).Following Hess¿ growth and expansion strategy (Hess, 2010) this paper is going to analyse the Hess company internationalising into another country market. Possible markets will be detected and evaluated. Moreover, an appropriate entry method and a marketing strategy to penetrate the chosen market will be developed. (part of conclusion):To meet drivers of internationalisation such as economies of scale, managerial urge and high demand of innovative and sustainable lighting solutions, Hess as a German elite global market leader should enter Australia as a further step of growth. With its technological competences to produce sustainable high quality products and a strong brand it can compete and deal with the industry forces on the Australian market. However, Australia entails differences to the German market. A detailed evaluation of entry methods resulted in the establishment of a region centre including a marketing department as the most reasonable solution. The mutual exchange of experiences enables sales forces and marketers on the spot to position and penetrate the market effectively.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 40 pp. Englisch.
