Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Vienna (Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Anglistik- Literatur- Gender Studies , language: English, abstract: The paper investigates Meyer¿s popular saga from a feminist point of view focusing on the development of Belläs character and her quest for identity in a rigidly patriarchal world, which forces her to choose between mutually exclusive options. It will be argued that Belläs life is entirely determined by the two central male characters who form a polarized axis that slowly tears her apart. Belläs low self-esteem and her strong attachment to the over-idealized Edward Cullen will be read as a symptom of her placelessness in a world that does not leave room for her to develop as an autonomous subject. Belläs wish to become a vampire can be equalled with woman¿s desire to gain access to a higher social realm via her husband and thus escape her marginalisation in patriarchal culture. As Beauvoir writes: ¿ There is no other way out for her than to lose herself, body and soul, in him who is represented to her as the essential, as the absolute¿(Beauvior, The Second Sex, 653). In order to become a supposedly superior being and to live eternally in the idealized capitalist, patriarchal and puritanically Christian world Edward represents, Bella has to make a series of sacrifices. Leaving her mother behind she moves into a male dominated world which is divided into morally idealized Christian vampires and racially devalued werewolves. She is forced to give up her friendship with Jacob Black, who can be read as her free childlike self, in order to enter a world that again pushes her into the patriarchally pre-defined role of mother and wife. Similar patterns of stereotypical representations of femininity can be observed in various characters of the saga. A more controversial note is brought in by Belläs half-vampire child who can be seen as a destabilizing factor of the sagäs rigid dichotomy. Taking all this into consideration we as feminists have to ask, whether it is desirable to have millions of young women worldwide admiring Bella and the mysogynist world in which she lives.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: The following essay about Henry Fielding's novel Tom Jones. The History of a Foundling (1749), deals with the author's contribution to the development of the genre 'novel', which had to prove itself as a potentially literary form in the eighteenth century century. By this time, prose fiction had to enforce its claim as a worthy pursuit and the form of the novel had to stand up to the dominant genres of verse and drama. Fielding was one of the first authors, who resolved to write fiction and with his humorous style of writing he revolutionized eighteen-century-literature.In this context, the function of the narrator plays an important role, for he is responsible for the success of Tom Jones and for many complications of the plot. In the introductory chapters, preceding the individual Books of the novel, he presents himself as a deep thinker, discoursing on the philosophy of writing and foregrounding himself by intrusive comments and self-glorifying statements. What is told, the content of his story, seems to come second and the process of writing is centred as the 'real' subject of the text.Besides the narrator's self-interest, his method of narrative selection causes much confusion, for he is constantly withholding significant information from the reader. In doing so, Fielding is leading his audience knowingly into the wrong direction, forcing it to make its own judgements and interpretations rather than trusting blindly in his guidance. The main function of the 'games' the author is playing with his readers, is to strengthen their engagement with the text, forcing them to reconsider previous interpretations and judgements. Thus, the reader's full attention is required throughout the whole novel and he is forced to participate in its progress. As a result, a constant adherence of suspense is guaranteed in all books of Tom Jones, regardless of its length. 24 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2012 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: A, University of Malta, language: English, abstract: Horror genre has its origins in the gothic 19th century novels like Marry Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) or John Polidori's The Vampire (1819). Even though horror movie is a typical European genre, it has a long history in American cinema dating back to 1915 silent movie Les Vampires by Freuillade and to one of the first sound movies from 1931, Tod Browning's famous Dracula. Horror movies may be put into three categories: ones that contain the supernatural elements, in which vampires, ghosts, witchcraft appears; psychological horror, which relies on characters' fears, their guilt or beliefs; and massacre movies, with scenes of slaughter, brutality and rough treatment (Cinema Studies 184).Although horror movies, as an element of mass culture, may be perceived as simplistic, predictable, lacking depth and simply being an unworthy for analysis, there is a great deal of films that in its content reflect the contemporary problems that occurred in the American society. While many critics consider horror genre as a 'low culture,' one must not fail to notice that its significance is enormous. One can sense an inextricable link between film and social concerns, since the role of the film is to project certain fears and concerns of contemporary society as well as to help people to resolve them. As Prawer observed: 'If the terror film is thus connected to our social concerns, it also, paradoxically, helps us to cope with our ordinary life by jolting us out of it' (60). A popular opinion has it that the popularity of horror movies increases along with the disturbance experienced by the society. Since the 20th century is perceived as the era of the constant social upheaval, the history of the horror movie equals the history of the anxiety (Wells 3); hence, the time the cultural chaos erupts, the audience turns to horror movies as a means that liberates them from their anxiety. As Phillips asserts, 'anxiety tends to promote a sense of helplessness; fear, on the other hand, provides an impetus for change' (9). Thus, the fear evoked by the slasher film, one is forced to invent new ways of coping with his or her difficulties, since a typical way of thinking will occur not only problematic but also troublesome. 16 pp. Englisch.…

From the earliest days of cinema, in films such asThe Birth of a Nation (1915), The Fighting Roosevelts (1919) or Young Mr.Lincoln (1939), to the present day, in films such as Nixon (1990) and Dick(1999), many real-life U.S. presidents have been portrayed in the mostdifferent ways. In the years before crises like Watergate, Vietnam and thegrowing media coverage have demystified the presidency, most of these reallifeportrayals have shown the President as a wise heroic man, almost like asaint (Edelman 323). In the years after these events, Hollywood lost itsrespect for the presidency discovering that the man in charge was humanand that he also makes mistakes (323). Since Hollywood likes to adaptpolitics, it is no surprise that politics adapted Hollywood, too. The simplefact that Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980 was subject forseveral jokes in one of the most successful movies of 1985, Back To TheFuture. In this time-travel film, Marty McFly (Michael J.Fox) accidentallytravels to the year 1955 where he tries to find the inventor of the timemachine, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), to help him get back to 1985.After having found him, Doc Brown does not believe Marty's story. In orderto find out, if Marty's story is true, Doc asks him the following question:Doc Brown: Then tell me, Future Boy, who's President of the UnitedStates in 1985 Marty McFly: Ronald Reagan.Doc Brown: Ronald Reagan The actor Ha! Then, who's Vice President Jerry Lewis I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady and JackBennetty is Secretary of Treasury !Marty McFly: Doc, you gotta listen to me !Doc Brown: I got enough practical jokes for one evening. Good night,Future Boy.And later in the film, when Marty shows Doc Brown the recording of hiscamcorder, Doc Brown is amazed about this technological invention and criesout: 'No wonder your president has to be an actor, he's gotta look good ontelevision.' Of late, some scholars are in the opinion that education has both good and bad effects in the context of conflicts, particularly the ethnic and/or international ones. The paper is divided into relevant parts such as the introduction, literature research, analysis, conclusion and references. Reputable scholarly sources are used and expert opinions on recent qualitative researches have been given particular importance. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: ContentI. IntroductionII. Analysis and Interpretation1. Catherine's Qualifications2. Catherine's WeaknessesIII. ConclusionIV. BibliographyI. IntroductionIn the British fiction of the nineteenth century female protagonists were especially outstanding andnot only used by Jane Austen, who wrote about Elizabeth Bennet, Emma Woodhouse or CatherineMorland, just to name a few of them, but also by Sir Walter Scott with his heroine Jeanie Deans (cf.Morgan 559). Many other authors of the nineteenth century chose a heroine as a main character andnot a hero, even if there are very well men participating in the story, but they only have a minor roleand represent the counterpart to the women (cf. Morgan 559).Now the question may arise why especially in that century women played the major role inthe novels whereas before and after that the protagonists had mostly been male (cf. Morgan 560).(.)Instead, it isto take a closer look at one of these heroines, which is Catherine Morland. The aim of this work isto decide whether she is an ideal heroine or not. To come to a decision it is necessary to analyse hercharacter as well as her actions.Since the whole story, as well as all the other protagonists, are set around her, the reader getsto know how Catherine feels, how she thinks, and especially learns a lot about her likes anddislikes. We do not get as much information about other characters as we get about Catherine. But ifwe look closer at the person of Catherine, it becomes questionable whether it is justified to awardthe title of an ideal heroine to her. The reader accompanies her through her whole stay in Bath andNorthanger Abbey and has a chance to observe her behaviour in crucial situations. This observationis often bilateral, as on the one hand we can see the self-confident girl travelling on her own, and onthe other hand her childish behaviour and her naivete point out that she is not yet a grown-up. Thisbecomes notably evident when we compare her to the other characters in the novel.Nevertheless, this has to be analysed in detail in order to make a fair decision. In thefollowing passages I would therefore firstly like to illustrate to what extend one can call Catherinean ideal heroine, what her strengths are and when she might be superior to other persons, andsecondly, this should be contrasted to the attributes which disqualify her to be labelled such inregard to the weak points in her character and behaviour. 16 pp. Englisch.…

Executives need to be 'skilled at working with people from countries other than their own' (Adler 2008, p. 13) because 'only those who really understand their foreign colleagues and themselves can achieve success in international business' (Schroll-Machl 2003, p. 9). Geert Hofstede, a Dutch organizational sociologist, conducted a worldwide study on the influence of national cultures on organizational cultures. One of the dimensions he found during his study was uncertainty avoidance. This dimension 'deals with a society's tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity. [.] It indicates to what extent a culture programs its members to feel either uncomfortable or comfortable in unstructured situations. Unstructured situations are novel, unknown, surprising, different from usual. Uncertainty avoiding cultures try to minimize the possibility of such situations by strict laws and rules, safety and security measures.' Moreover they are often guided by the 'belief in absolute Truth: there can only be one Truth and we have it. [.] Uncertainty accepting cultures are more tolerant of opinions different from what they are used to; they try to have as few rules as possible' (Hofstede 1994, p. 4).This paper deals with the influence of this uncertainty avoidance dimension and the accompanying appreciation of rules and regulations on doing business in Germany and Japan. 16 pp. Englisch.…

Therefore, the work could rather be seen as a collection of essays than a monographic book. Additionally, Leopold writes about such a diversity of places and species, that the work as a whole seems to be very fragmented. However, this style of composition is not as randomized as it seems at first glance. Instead, as a whole, the essays of A Sand County Almanac form the structure of an ecosystem with interdependent parts supporting and challenging each other. In this paper, I will first explore Leopold's own definition of an ecosystem as he describes it in the subchapter 'The Land Pyramid'. Then, I will demonstrate that A Sand County Almanac mirrors the complex structures of such a system. 20 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - Topic: International Organisations, Sciences Po Paris, Dijon, Nancy, Poitier, Menton, Havre, language: English, abstract: The realistic point of view that international relations are only ruled by states is definitely passé. The states are no longer a black box. The increasing number and impacts of civil society influences not only the national sphere but also the international arena. This development has its impacts on diplomacy. Diplomacy is no longer state-centric. Non-state actors like non-governmental organisations (NGO) and multinational corporations (MNC) play a significant role in international relations. Some scholars even state that they are more important than states. (Cooper/Hocking 2000:362) We can assume that certain NGOs and MNCs are definitely more relevant than some states. The fact that some MNCs earning capacity and financial resources are higher than the one of states has a lot to commend this assumption. In a ranking of states and MNCs by size of earning in 2005-2006 the twentieth is Wal-Mart with $288 billion after Sweden with $321.4. Beside Wal-Mart there are British Petroleum ($285.1 billion) and Exxon Mobil ($270.8 billion) which are in the ranking before states like Turkey ($268.7 billion) and Austria (25. / $262.1 billion). In the top fifty are fourteen MNCs and in the following fifty up to place one hundred there are thirty-six MNCs and only fourteen states. It's the contrast to the top fifty and with a total look on the top hundred there are fifty percent states and fifty percent MNCs. These numbers illustrate well the huge impact of non-state actors in global and national governance. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionKate Chopin s the Awakening and especially its ending has been interpreted primarily in two different ways: There are those who believe that the ending, Edna s suicide, is Edna s final awakening (among them inter alia Rosowski, cf. 'The Novel of Awakening.' p.47) and there are those who argue that the ending is Edna s final realization of her failure to find a place in society (for example Lattin, cf. 'Childbirth and Motherhood.' p.44; Solomon cf. 'Characters as Foils to Edna.' p.119). But beyond these contrasting angles of interpretation, there is one common belief: The Awakening is Edna s struggle to find her own identity, her genuine place in society or, in short, herself:One of these days [.] I m going to pull myself together for a while and think try to determine what character of a woman I am; for, candidly, I don t know. By all the codes which I am acquainted with, I am a devilishly wicked specimen of the sex. But some way I can t convince myself that I am. I must think about it. (p.103)As the figures of Adèle Ratignolle and Mlle. Reisz show, it is, after all, possible for women to find an identity of their own. Patricia Hopkins Lattin and Deborah E. Parker have argued that these two women serve as role models for Edna. But both Lattin and Parker fail to give a role model-based explanation of Edna s failure to find her place in society. The question that shall be examined in the following is therefore the contribution of Edna s role models to her failure. It shall be analyzed why Edna, unlike Adèle and Mlle. Reisz, does not succeed in finding her place in society, and why she also does not succeed to model herself on Adèle or Reisz. In order to answer this question, especially the differences between Edna and each of her role-models shall be examined. Since many research papers have argued that Adèle Ratignolle and Mlle. Reisz serve as Edna`s role models, this view will not be verified in the following.First of all, Edna s relationship with Adèle and, afterwards, with Mlle. Reisz will be examined. It will be analyzed to what degree Edna imitates these role models. By doing so, the discrepancies between the characters of Edna and Adèle Ratignolle and Edna and Mlle. Reisz will be presented, and it will be examined to what degree Edna would be able to lead the same life as her role models do. The last task will be to point out to what extend it is due to these role models that Edna fails to find her place in society. 20 pp. Englisch. …
