In the American public the idea of migration beyond the Mississippi territory was met with an enthusiastic interest, than Americäs population grew dramatically and additional land for settlement was required. The westward expansion, however, destroyed the political balance regarding the issue of slavery that held the nation for decades together and even dramatically intensified the conflict between the Southerners and the Northerners. By 1860 the North and the South grew to such an extent apart resulting in the inevitable secession of eleven of the fifteen slave states from the Union and creation of a new nation called the Confederate States of America. The westward expansion subsequently led to the bloodiest conflict in the young American history, the American Civil War. Inhaltlich werden immer neue Themen behandelt, die mit dem Fortschritt zusammen hängen, aber auch klassische Elemente finden ihren Weg in die jüngsten Werke dieses weit gefächerten Genres. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich mich mit den Aspekten des klassischen Grimmschen Märchen auseinander setzen, die sich in den Kurzgeschichten des britischen Schriftstellers Roald Dahl finden. Obwohl er gerade als Autor von Kinderbüchern große Erfolge feierte, zeigen seine Kurzgeschichten eine andere, düstere Seite Dahls, die sich auf Anhieb nicht gleich mit dem Konzept des Märchens vereinbaren lässt. Blickt man jedoch auf die Tradition des Märchens zurück und analysiert diese näher, fällt auf, dass auch hier oftmals ein ernsthafter, fast grausamer unterschwelliger Ton herrscht. Die Überlieferung der Märchen, so wie sie in neu adaptierten Bilderbüchern oder Filmproduktionen auftreten, sind in vielerlei Hinsicht ausgeschmückt und lassen Dinge, wie die verletzten Augen des Prinzen, der von Rapunzels Turm springt, außer Acht. Doch dies ist nur eine der vielen nennenswerten Parallelen, die sich zwischen Dahls Kurzgeschichten und den traditionellen Volksmärchen aus der Sammlung der Gebrüder Grimm ziehen lassen. So gibt es im Märchen häufig eine Art phantastischen Twist, der z.B. darin besteht, dass ein Pfefferkuchenhaus im Wald oder eine andere Welt am Boden eines Brunnens gefunden wird. Diese Momente geben der Geschichte das phantastische Flair eines Märchens und prägen das weitere Geschehen unwiderruflich. Bei Dahl gibt es meist einen ebenso gravierenden Einschnitt in das bis dahin 'normale' Geschehen, allerdings besteht dieser eher in einem Schockmoment, der besonders beim Leser innerhalb kürzester Zeit eine Erkenntnis auslöst. So wird uns z.B. bewusst, welch grausames Geheimnis die alte Dame in The Landlady hat während der junge Billy immer noch fasziniert und ahnungslos in ihrem Salon steht und die ausgestopften Tiere bewundert (vgl. Following two incidents of children killing children, this paper will examine various arguments made by Nils Christie (2000) and Louk Hulsman (1986) in regards to crime. This paper will describe and analyse the public and political responses to two notorious cases of the killing of children by children, one in England and one in Norway. Using the works of Christie (2000) and Hulsman (1986), I will present the ways in which the cases were discussed as symptomatic of wider social problems, and how differently England and Norway acted, ultimately portraying their respective juvenile criminal justice system. This paper will examine both the similarities and the differences in the reactions to the killings in England and Norway, arguing that while the similarities may be more obvious the differences may be more instructive. On the surface, both seem like similar cases but because of the different geographical locations, they were handled quite differently. This sets up the context of penological arguments about the emergence of a postmodern penality. To start, one must understand the basis of Christie's (2000) and Hulsman's (1986) theories respectively. Nils Christie (2000) argues that a nation's extent and level of punishment is a normative question. In criminology, the term normative defines the structures within culture which help regulate the proper function of society. These structures encourage and enforce valued social activity and discourage negative acts. Punishment is normative because crime control executives and decision-makers are both free and obliged to choose how far punishment will go.
