As Wilson has also pointed out (vgl. Wilson n.d.:1), only a few scholars have been dealing with this issue before, without being able to define a precise explanation of the symbol. It remains, therefore, a great challenge to analyse it in further detail.The present essay aims to encompass the challenging and broad field of symbols related to the eggs that emerge in the novel. First, universal signs associated to eggs are going to be presented, in order to provide a general overview of the development of the ancient image in the context of the novel. In the subsequent part, the three major scenes are going to be analysed in detail, where the egg is mentioned: first, related to the other key symbol of the novel, namely to the wall; second, appearing as a white, and finally as a giant black egg. For better understanding of the symbols, they are going to be explained in the context of the novel. The paper ends with a short summary and concluding remarks.Particular attention is also devoted to the language applied, as the close examination of expressions reveals and becomes the prior transmitter of the meaning of any literature. The utilisation of language and dream helps Lessing¿s protagonists (vgl. In both novels it is not the police or the judiciary that deal with this task. The detectives are needed to detect the wrongdoers and therefore they can decide how they will punish them ¿ for example, it is their decision whether they want to take the matter to the police or not. Although he visited countless cities both at home and abroad, the overwhelming majority of his urban poems deals with life in the Manhattan district of Harlem, which assumed a key role for African Americans at the beginning of the twentieth century and can also be regarded as the centre of Hughes¿ own life. Viewing Harlem as a microcosm of black urban life and using it as a blueprint in his poetic work, he managed to draw a diverse and multi-layered image of existence in the city. Since, naturally, racial aspects are of particular significance in this context, the following analysis will try to examine the various roles played by urban life for African Americans. Thus, the essay will focus first on the hopes and expectations they associated with the city as a new environment. It will then examine whether and in what way those hopes were actually reflected in the general attitude towards urban life and in its various forms of expression, and whether there might have been less positive feelings as well. If so, it will then be necessary to deal with the problems and difficulties encountered by blacks in the city as they are presented in Hughes¿ poetry. Den Schwerpunkt dieser Analyse habe ich auf die männliche Kleidung der Frauenfiguren gelegt. Im 18. Jahrhundert waren besonders Uniformen nur den Männern vorbehalten. Anhand dieser Tatsache zeigt sich deutlich, dass die beiden Figuren sich selbst, aus unterschiedlichen Intentionen in eine männliche Rolle drängen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist Antworten auf Ursache, Erscheinungsform und Bedeutung der androgynen Rolle zu finden. Zudem soll dargestellt werden, in wie weit die Androgynie ein wesentliches Charaktermerkmal der Figuren ist.Der Grund, warum ich mich für diese Figuren entschieden habe liegt darin, dass sich viele Parallelen zwischen Mariane und Mignon aufzeigen. Dem Leser sticht bereits beim ersten Rezipieren die Verkleidungsmanie der beiden Figuren ins Auge. Hinzu kommt, dass beide zu der Randgruppe der wandernden Theaterspielerinnen gehören. Wichtig ist es auch, dass Mignon Wilhelm unablässig an Mariane erinnert. Schließlich verweist Martina Schwanke darauf, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen den Namen Mignon und Mariane gibt. Als Engel verkleidet und aufgrund ihrer italienischen Herkunft, weist Mignon Ähnlichkeit mit Marienfiguren auf. Mignon als kleine Maria deute direkt auf den Namen Maria-ne hin, so Schwanke.Die Gliederung dieser Arbeit richtet sich nach dem chronologischen Auftreten der beiden Figuren in dem Werk. Demnach beginne ich mit der Analyse der androgynen Merkmale am Beispiel von Mariane. Abschließend untersuche ich Mignons androgyne Züge.Bei Mignon soll nicht nur ihre knabenhafte Uniform, sondern auch der Name untersucht werden. Im Sommer 1918 kam es dann zum Bürgerkrieg mit den sozialistischen Revolutionären und den Mensheviks, die daraufhin von Lenin verboten wurden. Die russische Führung glaubte zu diesem Zeitpunkt, dass für eine kommunistische Revolution in ganz Europa ein großes Potential bestehe. Im Jahr 1920 vertrieben sie die Polen aus der Ukraine und marschierten weiter bis nach Warschau.
