Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.

Basis for the analysis forms an incident between a Western company and the Chinese county which it operates in. The analysis reveals that major issues are grounded in different attitudes towards hierarchy, varying importance of group membership and loyalty as well as the cultures' different perception of time. Further difficulties may result from distinct degrees of explicitness and differences in uncertainty avoidance. Concluding that awareness of cultural differences is crucial for successful negotiation outcomes the study will finally offer practical suggestions how to deal with the cultural challenges faced by each of the negotiating parties. 20 pp. Englisch. …

Introduction In the following written analysis, I am going to deal with the topic 'The film 'Tortilla Soup' in context of Mexican Life in America and Type and Stereotype of Chicanos and Latinos in Film'. In the main body, I am going to show II.1 Mexico with the points II.1.1 Mexican history, II.1.2 Mexican American Migration and II.1.3 Mexican Life in America. The next point will deal with the film 'Tortilla Soup', II.2 About the film. I will divide this point into II.2.1 Plot, II.2.2 Major characters and actors and II.2.3 The picture of food in connection with family in 'Tortilla Soup'. After that, I will talk about II.3.1 Latinos and chicanos. This point will be divided into II.3.1 Type and Stereotype: Chicano Images in Film, II.3.2 What it means to be Latino in 2000 and II.3.4 Contemporary Latino films - the end of stereotypes . The last point will be III. Conclusion. I think that the historical embedding of a film is extremely important to gain a better understanding of a film. I wanted to focus on Mexico first with its history, migration and the life of Mexicans in America. Then I wanted to talk about the film itself with the plot, main characters and the picture of food in connection with family in the film. And in the end, I wanted to deal with the topic of Chicano Images in Film , Latinos in the year 2000 and contemporary Latino films with a possible ending of stereotypes. 20 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Marburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Transatlantic Stereotyping, language: English, abstract: David French is one of Canada's most renowned playwrights of the 20th century. With his play 'Jitters', which he wrote in 1979, French turned away from his more serious plays to create his first comedy. The plot is set in the theatrical world of a small Toronto theater, the Leicester Street Play-house, and takes place shortly before, during, and after the performance of the play-within-the-play, 'The Care and Treatment of Roses'. French uses the characters in his work to illustrate the contradictory attitudes regarding the clash of Canadian and American culture, in this case from the point of view of actors, producers and henchmen of the stage. And even though the play revolves around the institution of theater, French's depiction of its characters also aims at the Canadian people as such. In 'Jitters' he gives an insight into the weak Canadian self esteem and the attempt of forming a Canadian identity in competition against the more dominant American culture. Thus, in this term paper, I would like to elaborate on Canadian-American relations in French's play. In a first step, I will give an overview about the historical development of theater in Canada and to what extent it is intertwined with the question of national identity in that country. With this theoretical knowledge as a basis, I will further go on with an analysis of the people in 'Jitters' itself. I will begin that part of the term paper by looking at the minor characters in the play and will then go on characterizing the two protagonists, namely Jessica Logan and Patrick Flanagan. These two are used by French as the strongest opposing forces when it comes to different attitudes regarding the relations between the two north American nations. My analyses will be made against the background of the images which are created of Canada and the United States and the relations between these two countries respectively. Professional theater in Canada is not older than about fifty years. The wish to establish this art form, however, reaches back to the early days of colonization by European settlers. Back then, in the 16th and early 17th centuries, the theater was dominated by the French lan-guage which was because north America had become the battlefield of French and English interests. Thus, the development of a national theater was closely connected to the political and military situation in the young country. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Sociology - War and Peace, Military, grade: 2,0, University of Siegen, language: English, abstract: Before you can give an answer to the question above, written in the title, you have to define the term 'democracy' in the all the details in which you will use this term during your following work.In that way Ithe term 'democracy' will be defined before working on the original question. Although now one could say that you could easily work on your question is way too optimistic as there are a lot of other terms which will have to be defined clearly before working with them because otherwise there is no doubt that some major misreadings will or at least- to be optimistic- can occur. These are the terms which one normally thinks of pretty clear when it comes to speaking in political terms- but are they really So, to make them clear there will very short definitions of these terms too and then the introduction part of this essay is done and from that point on it really works intensively on the question on what it does take us all to make the world safe for democracy- or is the world safe for democracy and we don't have to do anything about it at all That is just another question coming directly into my mind when dealing with such a difficult question. 20 pp. Englisch.…

Additionally, even though the relations date back to the beginning of the 1970s, they have not fulfilled the expectations of many people in both Europe and Southeast Asia for two main reasons. Firstly, the context in which these relations take place has significantly changed with the end of the Cold War and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Naturally, the aims and objectives of the relationship have to be much broader than thirty years ago, because they have to take into account these changed international circumstances since they do not take place in a vacuum. Secondly, both ASEAN and the EU developed internally, for example through different rounds of enlargements. These internal developments of the two partners have to be taken into account as well, just as the changed international environment.Since 2001, owing to the reasons mentioned above, new initiatives were proposed to reinvigorate the relationship and to make it more effective in facing the new, profoundly changed international arena. Can these initiatives achieve the aim of improving the relationship and consequently prepare it for the challenging future The essay will proceed as follows. Firstly, the 'spider-web' of relations between the EU and ASEAN will be portrayed to give an impression of the complexity of the relationship. Secondly, the main developments since 2001 will be introduced and analyzed to be able, thirdly, to conclude if the relations are healthy enough to face the challenges of the future. 20 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Augsburg, course: Proseminar, language: English, abstract: William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice surely can be considered one of the playwright's greatest works. Still today critics are not fully aware of its actual meaning and there are many different opinions of how this play is to be interpreted. As a matter of fact we can say that Shakespeare has created one of the most diverse plays in the history of drama. Containing two equally important plot-lines and several sub-plots it is very difficult to make out even one main character or to be absolutely sure about their variety of intentions. On the one hand there is one of the main characters, the Jew Shylock, 'a comic antagonist far more important than any such figure had been in his [Shakespeare's] earlier comedies' , who plays the role of a non-Christian villain. And opposing him we have the Venetian society with all its flaws and hypocrisies which are pointed out during the conflict with Shylock. On the other hand there is the romantic love story between Portia and Bassanio located in remote Belmont, which is the actual trigger for the conflict between Antonio and Shylock and also brings a solution to it. This solution is due to Portia's cunning and liberation as a woman, which can be seen in her disguising as the judge in order to be able to save Antonio's life; there are only two qualities which are supposed to be quite unusual for a female character of that time. But at the same time she has to fulfil her typical role as 'a faithful daughter whatever the consequence' , yielding to fate by obeying her father's will. And Portia is not the only ambigous and exceptional figure of the play. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1.5, The Australian National University, language: English, abstract: 1993 when Ruggie termed the 'unbundling of territoriality' was a year in whichknowledge and communication that is its accessibility and dissemination entered anew realm of space and time. On the 30th of April 1993 the World Wide Web and itsunderlying technology was made freely available to use by anyone. Today over onebillion people use the Internet, or every sixth person on the planet. A collective brainone might say is forming in front of our eyes growing with every new person enteringthree W's into a web browser. While Ruggie aimed to search for, and investigate into, a fundamental transformationof the modern system of states, he emphasized that such an analysis would find afruitful starting point in the [re]conceptualisation of territoriality. This paper willutilize Ruggie's concept, by applying its analysis to the emerging and manifestingspace-time implosion driven by the Internet and other communication technologies. Therefore, it is argued that Cyberspace provides a practical sphere to investigate intothe unbundling of territoriality in a postmodern world. In the first section the impact on territoriality resulting from the emergence of theCyberspace will be discussed. Ruggie's model of differentiation between systems ofrule and territory is applied to explain the transformation of territory in thepostmodern era of Cyberspace. It is followed by an investigation into theconsequences of Cyberspace on sovereignty. Showing that Cyberspace does indeedprovide a new stage in Ruggie's terms, facilitating an unbundling and relocation ofsovereignty away from state territory. The third section discusses the implication ofthe virtual space on the rise and acceleration of globalisation. It is argued thatglobalisation, could not be perceived as a postmodern phenomenon without theCyberspace revolution. The last part of the paper, proposes the need to rethink thenotion of movement in the age of virtual and real spaces. Cyberspace allows 'tourists'in line with Bauman's description to choose between virtual and real movement. Thepreceding discussion will finally lead to the conclusion that the conceptualisation ofCyberspace as one aspect responsible for the unbundling of territory provides animportant explanatory insight into the transformation from modernity topostmodernity. 16 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2007 in the subject History Europe - Germany - National Socialism, World War II, grade: 1, University of Nottingham, language: English, abstract: The 20th century is sometimes called the 'centrury of genocide'. Never before have people been killing each other on such a scale, with so sophisticated methods and techniques, for so many reasons and seemingly without any scrupules or mercy. Untold masses of humans fell victims to these massacres. From South West Africa and Armenia to Cambodia and Rwanda, there were a number of genocides. A number of genocides, but just one Holocaust.Or, was there just one Most of the scholarly attention devoted to the subject of Holocaust has, not surprisingly, been focused on the Jewish experience during the Nazi period. The study of the Gypsy experience during the same period has been largely underrepresented in the historiography discussions. Therefore, in this paper I will concentrate on the Porrajmos. The main aim of this work is to find out if and eventually to what extent the Shoah and the Porrajmos are comparable. In the first half I deal with the persecution of the Gypsies solely. I describe the main characteristics of the treatment of the Gypsies by the Nazis as well as mention the main laws and decrees that dealt with the issue. In the second part of this paper my own believes become much more pronounced. I discuss and compare the Nazi treatment of Jews and Gypsies; touch upon the most debated and controversial issues and above all analyze the main differences in the treatment of these two groups.Based on the facts from the first chapter and deriving from the discussion in the second chapter I shall then try to draw conclusions concerning Yehuda Bauer's thesis that 'It does not do any service to the cause of the Romani people to mix them up in the same analytical framework with the Jews by defining the Holocaust as pertaining to both Gypsies and Jews'. 24 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, University of Twente , language: English, abstract: In most European societies, it is women who are considered responsible for raising children and caring for dependent family members, whereas men's task is to cater for the family financially. On the one hand, this prevents mothers from participating actively in the labour market, while on the other hand, it gives fathers little time to spend with their children. Traditionally, national welfare states have regulated this kind of inequality in accordance with society's norms and values, by providing a framework of services (e.g. public childcare facilities), monetary transfers (child-rearing benefits), and leave regulations (parental leave), thus creating incentives and disincentives for mothers (and fathers) to work and/or to look after the children at home. National arrangements vary considerably across the different states, whether they be geographically and culturally close or remote, whether they belong to the same or to a different welfare state regime. A good example for such differences are child-care arrangements in Germany and France. Although neighbours and both conservative-corporatist welfare states, they have developed very different approaches in dealing with the problem of labour market participation of women with children. In the past 20 years, welfare states, and with them family policies, have faced considerable pressures of different types. External as well as internal changes have played a role here. Macroeconomic changes have brought about a need for states to increase their competitiveness in order to combat rising unemployment, cutting down or restructuring social welfare. Moreover, attitudes towards childcare have changed, with women increasingly wanting to take up work. Another type of pressure arose with European integration. With the EU, a new player has emerged to interfere with the design of family policies in the Member States, especially after recognising that competition and market integration alone do not automatically lead to social justice. 28 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Middle- and South America, grade: 2,0, University of Münster (Politikwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: 'Dependence is dead, long live dependence and the class struggle' thus the title of an article by the dependency theorist André Gunder Frank, published in 1974 in Latin American Perspectives. Indeed, it has often been stated that dependency theory has lost its significance in explaining underdevelopment and has thus been 'relegated to footnote status in the field of development studies'. Yet, in recent years, a lot of scholars have attempted to refute this statement, claiming that dependency theory still has its use in development studies, even though they have identified a number of flaws.Emerging in parallel with other development theories in the 1950s, dependency theory mainly focuses on Latin America, the most important authors being Prebisch, Furtado, dos Santos, Frank and finally Cardoso and Faletto, whose theory this paper concentrates on. Most of the different approaches within dependency theory share several Marxist core assumptions, such as the construction of base (means and relations of production) and superstructure (the political, cultural and social consequences of these means and relations of production). On the international level, all politics, whether external or domestic, takes place within the framework of the capitalist world economy which determines the behavior of actors as well as patterns of interaction between them. In this paper, the question of whether dependency theory as presented by Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Enzo Faletto is still useful in explaining underdevelopment will be examined considering as example the events occurring in a typical example of an underdeveloped Latin American economy - Bolivia. The election of the left-wing populist Evo Morales potentially represents a paradigm shift for one of the poorest Latin American countries - a shift away from the neoliberal ideology towards a still capitalist regime with a socialist flavor to it (if one is to believe the declarations of Morales's vice president Alvaro García Linera). Applying Cardoso and Faletto's approach to the case of Bolivia reveals its strengths, but also some methodological as well as textual weaknesses. In order to show this, the first section will present their theory as exhibited in their publication Dependency and Development in Latin America and in an article published by Cardoso in the New Left Review in 1972. The second section focuses on the events in Bolivia, pointing at strong and weak points of the approach. Section four concludes. 24 pp. Englisch. …

But newspapers as we know them today have only come into existence about three-hundred and fifty years ago. And although the liberty of the press at least in the countries of the European Union is today highly appraised, this has not always been the case. For a long time newspapers were a thorn in the flesh of governments, which thought that printed oppositional opinions threatened them. Therefore the governments tried to control newspapers tightly by enacting consequential laws. For years politics thus determined the development of newspapers. This term paper wants to deal with the influence of the English government on the development of newspapers between 1660 and 1855. This relates to London newspapers, if not stated otherwise. Also, the term newspaper is used for the printed product, the company or the owner, resp., and the journalists, if not stated otherwise. The term is also used for news printed before 1670, even though the term itself only occured in the English language during that year. After explaining prerequisites that were necessary for the emergence of modern newspapers in the first place, I will shortly look at the formation of newspapers before 1660, before I have a close look at laws established by the English government between 1662 and 1843. Then, I am going to compare selected parameters concerning the development of newspapers in different centuries. In the practical part I will analyse eight issues of The Times. I therefore chose the first January issues of a year, published with a time lag of ten years in each case.In this term paper I want to analyse how the English government influenced the development of newspapers, which consequences this influence had, and how these again showed up in the newspapers themselves. Several things were necessary for the development of modern newspapers. About 3,500 BC the Sumerians developed writing. Only through writing disciplines like education, literature, and science, as well as trade and commerce could emerge or take place in a broader sphere. While the Sumerians wrote on, or rather carved clay tablets, the Egyptians used papyrus reeds from around 2,200 BC onwards. Compared to other materials like clay, stone and wood, papyrus had the great advantage to write something spontaneously and fast, and to be transported easily because of its light weight. 28 pp. Englisch.…

It is found that both factors had significant impact on Germany's trade surplus during the analysed period. Use of a piecewise linear regression technique, moreover, identifies changes in the development of Germany's trade surplus over time. A temporary downward shift in the consistent growth trend of Germany's trade surplus between the first quarter 1998 and the fourth quarter 2002 is seen to be due to changes in Germany's fiscal and monetary policy during the introduction phase of the Euro. 20 pp. Englisch. …

If we rise e.g. after a long working day into the overcrowded bus home, then is fast conscious to us: the group is too large. If we cannot master our tasks on the job punctually, we wish ourselves reinforcement. Everyone is each day in a multiplicity of groups: Family, friends, teammate etc. nevertheless: Does it really concern thereby groups With this question I would like to deal in chapter 2 more in greater detail. There one describes, by which components a group is characterized. Thereupon become in the 3. chapter different group sizes formally and during the process more exactly regarded. All these scenarios suggests that the group has emergent properties which go beyond the individuals who comprise it. Starting from chapter 4 I will be occupied further with the work with smaller groups. The data resulting from it can be used then likewise for the work with larger group - by the organization by sub-groups. At first we will regard, how to use small groups to promote interaction within the class as a whole. This chapter should be an assistance for understanding group phenomena and group processes. There are several similarities between the divided Koreas and the formerly divided Germanys. In both cases, the division grew out of the Second World War and the following Cold War. The divided nations have totally different systems of government. North Korea, as a communistic one-party state, is similar to the GDR and South Korea, as a democratic republic, is similar to the FDR. Major differences are apparent in the economic development between North and South Korea, which again corresponds to the situation in Germany at the end of the 1980s. In light of these similarities, an important question to answer is the following one: what lessons can the Korean Peninsula learn from German unification Thus, this essay will proceed as follows. Firstly, the developments in Germany, leading to the opening of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent unification will be described and analyzed. Secondly, the economic and socio-cultural outcomes of the unification will be briefly analyzed. Thirdly, recommendations for the Korean Peninsula will be formulated and finally, the essay will conclude its findings. 40 pp. Englisch.…

According to Freud's quotation, the main part of the mind is beneath the water and is called the subconscious. That means people are sometimes in a certain mood, think and act automatically without knowing the reasons. Wants arise from the subconscious mind; and manipulating the customer's wants is exactly what marketing experts in department stores would like to achieve. So the question is, if there are possibilities to influence the client's shopping habits in order to maximise the profit. For a long time, specialists in department stores have only concentrated on the aware visual, gustatory and haptical sense and have neglected the acoustical and especially the olfactory one. The customer could look at the products, could try foods in the supermarkets at cheese or sausage counters and were allowed to touch the goods. A specific smell or a sound used to be considered to be less important in the consumer goods marketing. It is true that 83% of sensations are received by the eyes. However, the more senses are addressed, the more information can be processed (cp. Fösken, 2006, p. 31).Nowadays, the subliminal manipulation of the costumer gets more and more in the focus of the smart salesmen. Because of a strong competition on the saturated consumer good market, a holistic strategy is needed to distinguish the products from the competitors . An experience-driven marketing strategy, which activates all five senses, becomes the new trend. In this term paper, the focus is going to be on the use of scent and music in department stores and shops. I establish the hypothesis that the two stimuli have an unconscious, positive influence on the customer's mood. Furthermore, a good customer's mood will have positive influences on his expenditures. To verify these assumptions, several researches are going to be analysed. Biological and chemical processes in the human body are neglected by reasons of shortage of space in this assignment. Also the technical implementation is not treated. Part two of the term paper is going to be about the relation between the customer's mood and his affection to buy products in department stores. In the first two chapters of part three, scent and music are separately examined concerning their effects on the customer's affection to buy. The combination of scent and music is treated in the third chapter of part three. Part four of this term paper summarises the most important gained information. Moreover, it gives pragmatic recommendations and future perspectives for the consumer goods marketing 20 pp. Englisch. …

Ulysses is not a novel, it's an epic. Inspired by Homer's adventures of the voyager hero Odysseus Joyce expanded a short story to almost a thousand pages and created a one-of-a-kind portrait of Dublin, at the start of the twentieth century. Therefore, according to the author, immigration policy should suit their needs in order to ensure the well-being of a country which depends on 'the contribution of immigrants [.] in every aspect of [its] national life.' However, with 37.4 million foreign-born residents in the United States in 2006 , of which 9.1 million have obtained legal permanent resident status since 1997 (1,266,264 in 2006 only) and an estimated 11.6 million are unauthorized migrants , immigration has become a highly controversial subject. Fuelled by the 9/11 attacks and a growing xenophobia in the United States, protest against legal and illegal immigration is increasing, forcing politicians to take action. Although the U.S. economy depends largely on immigrant labour, immigration policy is becoming tougher than ever. This paper deals with the latest legal efforts to control illegal immigration: the 2005 Border Protection, Anti-terrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act, House of Representatives Bill 4437 and the 2006 Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, Senate Bill 2611 and the reactions they caused among Americans. In order to illustrate the momentousness of the current debate about unauthorized migration, I will start with an overview of the most important facts and figures including a definition of the notion 'illegal/ unauthorized (im)migrant', the countries of origin and distribution of illegal immigrants and their impact on the U.S. economy. This will be followed by a discussion of the H.R.4437 and S.2611 bills and the conclusion to this paper. 24 pp. Englisch.…
