Neuware -Essay from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Queen's University Belfast (School of English), course: Sociolinguistics, language: English, abstract: Already in the 1960s and 70s have feminist linguistics started to examine language on the basis of gender questions. Numerous works focused on the problem whether women are discriminated through a more powerful ¿male¿ language use and how sexist language might be avoided. Within the subject, several different theories arose. This essay will at first demonstrate the development process of two main theories dealing with gender and language (the so called dominance and the difference-theory) and afterwards assess their adequacy in explaining linguistic behaviour in gender interaction. In 1973, Robin LAKOFF, a feminist linguist at the University of California, laid the foundations for a methodical and academic research on the subject of women¿s language. Her most important works Language and Woman¿s Place and Women¿s Language threw light upon the possibility of discrimination through language use. A very important example for such a case might be LAKOFF¿s observation of the way how women see themselves and which role they are holding within the American society. Thus, LAKOFF does not only examine the specific language used by women, but also the language used about women . Since language is guided by our thoughts, she considers it to be a mirror of the speaker¿s subconsciousness . In order to investigate this phenomenon more closely, LAKOFF scrutinized her own expressions as well as expressions of friends and acquaintances. Furthermore, she analysed conversations in the television programme. As the field of this small study was very restricted, no universality is claimed for its results , but as an outcome, several criteria are established that are seen as typical for women¿s language. These standards are as follows:BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 16 pp. Englisch.

FORSTER and GeorgeORWELL. While FORSTER¿s fourth published novel Howards End was alreadywritten in the early twentieth century (1910), ORWELL¿s famous dystopiaNineteen Eighty-Four was only published in 1949 and may therefore beconsidered as a late modern work. The historical background of the two novels obviously differs to a greatextent. On the edge of the First World War, E.M. FORSTER was particularlyconcerned with a disrupted society under the direct influence of the significantchanges in modern social life. The increasing forces of imperialism andcapitalism and tendencies of a growing urbanisation largely changed the lives ofpeople, directly affecting their private and public spheres. When ORWELL wrotehis novel under the influence of the Second World War, modern life hadadditionally been shaken up by two world wars and the effects of totalitariansystems in Europe.Despite the historical gulf between Orwell and Forster, which makes adirect comparison of their works impossible, this paper will concentrate on theprivate and public values of the novels¿ characters and thus also pay attentionto probable political notions of the authors. It will particularly figure out if the twowriters either endorse or contest a dividing line between private and publicvalues, additionally taking into consideration formal features as well as theoverall plot.Forster¿s novel Howards End predominantly deals with the interrelationsof two middle class families called the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes. Despitebelonging to the same class, their actual social background differs to a greatextent. Margaret and Helen Schlegel are initially depicted as not being English¿to the backbone¿, which is not only true because of their German origins, butalso because of their idealist attitude they seem to have adopted from theirfather, who rather was ¿the countryman of Hegel and Kant, [¿] the idealistinclined to be dreamy, whose Imperialism was the Imperialism of the air¿.Idealism and anti-imperialism are obviously not to be considered as being veryEnglish any more, but rather seem to have died out all over modern Europe.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

M. FORSTER, which might in fact be regarded as very different concerning their subject matter and style. When FORSTER completed his fourth published novel Howards End in 1910, Europe was on the edge of the First World War, while WOOLF¿s novel Between the Acts ¿ finished in November 1942 ¿ was created under the impacts of fascism, the frightening force of the Second World War, and the Blitz in Great Britain. Despite a relatively long time span between these works, the novels are dealing with similar modernist aspects insofar as they are both considering the changes of a society under the influence of modern life, resulting in a social fragmentation caused by political developments within Europe. This paper will at first reveal the indications of social fragmentations worked into the novels and, secondly, find out if FORSTER and WOOLF are actually providing a solution to the upcoming problems within their artwork. The political tensions in FORSTER¿s Howards End predominantly arise between the characters of the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes, two middle class families with completely different social backgrounds. As the director of a rubber company with African holdings, Henry Wilcox is the epitome of British industrialism and imperialism, while the Schlegel sisters (Margaret and Helen) are representing quite the opposite.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 16 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: English in Africa, language: English, abstract: In times of the pre-colonial period, contact between English and Nigerian indigenous languages was hardly to recognize. West Africa came into contact with Europeans for the first time in the 15th century. The Britons were ¿ in contrast to the Spanish and Portuguese - latecomers to the African scene, which is why the Nigerian languages did not have been influenced by the English language until the beginning of the colonial period. The unification of Nigeria in 1914 marked the starting point of her colonization. Since that point in time, contact between English and the major Nigerian languages has been increasing. Nigerian Pidgin (NP), which developed as a contact language between English and various indigenous languages, nowadays does no more fit the definition of a Pidgin as a pure contact language, for it is mainly spoken locally and not throughout the whole country. It is neither a creole, because it is not learned natively by children ¿ at least not throughout its whole area of spreading. To give an overview on how English, Nigerian Pidgin, and the three major indigenous languages are currently fighting to gain ground over each other in multilingual Nigeria, is the topic of this paper¿s first chapter. The role of English in West Africa in general and Nigeria in particular has been examined to a larger extent in the seminar, so here the main focus is laid on NP and the other three major indigenous languages. The second part deals with the altering role of Nigerian Pidgin in terms of literature, interethnic communication, and the mass media. Regarding NP on its way to a wider spread, nowadays it already is a foregone conclusion that this way would be paved with sharp stones ¿ those mostly put down by the administrative and governing institutions in Nigeria. This is why the last large section of this paper concentrates on prospective problems which NP ¿ and the other major languages spoken in Nigeria - will have to cope with in the next decades. To conclude, I am shortly touching on the thoughts and questions which came to my mind while investigating, and writing this paper.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, Dresden Technical University (Institut für Anglistische Sprachwissenschaft), course: Proseminar 'Varieties of English', language: English, abstract: Long before the English language became dominant on the British Isles Celtic languages were the main method of communication. But since the middle of the nineteenth century they had been losing their influence due to the rapid process of anglicisation. And soon Celtic languages could only be found in the western regions of the British Isles. The situation has not changed until now.Among the Celtic languages Welsh is considered to be the most survived one. Welsh is also the oldest language in Britain. It roots back at least 2.500 and possibly 4.000 years. Nowadays about 21 per cent of the population in Wales speak Welsh as their mother tongue. The native speakers of Welsh can be found mostly in the northern and western regions of the country whereas southern and eastern parts are throughout English speaking communities. (¿History of the Welsh Language¿) English which is spoken in these areas is influenced to some degree by Welsh. And as a result English spoken in Wales can be referred to as a dialect of the standard English language.Welsh English has its own specific features, which differentiate this variety from other dialects of English. These features can be found on all linguistic levels, on phonetical, morphological, grammatical, syntactical. Welsh English is supposed to be very peculiar pnonetically having its well-known song-form intonation. At the same time a great range of differences are to be noticed in grammar, syntax and vocabulary usage. And so the aim of this paper is to show and analyse the grammatical, syntactical and lexical aspects of Welsh English on the example of a literary work written in this variety. For this purpose the collection of short stories ¿My Neighbours¿ by Welsh novelist of the 20th century Caradoc Evans was chosen. These short stories are full of dialogues, which present the everyday spoken Welsh English. There is no clear reference to a particular region where protagonists originate from. Conversations in the text comprise language peculiarities that can be found in different parts of Wales. Apart from the linguistic analysis some information on history and the present-day status of Welsh and English in Wales is given.Due to the fact that Caradoc Evans as a Welsh writer is mainly known in Wales, and printed sources about himself and his creative life are to be found mostly in Wales, the information about the author and his works is based to a great extend on Internet sources.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Now that we're in, we were able to make a pig's breakfast out of it. (The Complete Yes Minister, qtd. In Otte 1)The essence that this sarcastic quotation transports, brushing away all party politics, great leaders and platform commitments, suggests that Euro-scepticism has always been in Great Britain's political culture and it is here to stay. Intrinsic motifs and reasons for the British Euroscepticism will be dealt with in part I of this paper and indeed, they constitute strong evidence that the rejection of Europe ¿ not only of the EU as a political instrument ¿ is firmly entrenched in major parts of the UK's society. To assume however that this sentiment has been equally present in all the political phases and parties in post WWII Great Britain is scientifically unsustainable. It becomes obvious especially if one considers the pro-European mood in the devolved Scottish Parliament and the parties represented in it, eg. The Scottish National Party and the Liberal Democrats (Watts/Pilkington 222, 243). Also on UK level the political approach towards the EU and its institutions has changed with the political personal in charge, intergovernmental relations and constellations; it is true especially in regard of the UK that the lines of approval and rejection of the EU are not congruent with party loyalities.t is therefore the task of this paper to distil ideological determinants and mind-sets and the crucial phases in British policies towards the European Union after World War II. Focus in part one lies on Britishness and its surrounding ideological patterns; part two at its core examines the last three governments of the United Kingdom, that is the administrations of Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair. It will be one of the statements of this work that both of the subsequent governments in many respects can be seen in the tradition of the first mentioned, although it was then indicated in another way and hoped by many pro-Europeans that this would not be the case. Furthermore one aim will be to isolate a tendency that enables the percipients of this academic work to venture an outlook on the future relations between Europe and the UK, which is especially vital in regard of the sustainability of the Union:Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

Leopold, Harris and Watson (2005)mentioned that Human Resources became matters of considerable competitiveadvantage. Human Resources, respectively the skills and knowledge of anorganisation¿s staff, as Hamel and Prahalat (1994) called it, has transformedthrough massive changes in the economical, technological, socioculturaljudicial and political conditions to one of the most important strategic factor ofsuccess for companies these days. HRM, as a reaction to these changes in¿Personnel Management¿, attempts to find various methods of resolution forpractice. If ¿Personnel Management¿, ¿HRM¿ or ¿SHRM¿, they all have a commongoal: obtaining the achievement potential of all organisational members best aspossible. But the ¿HRM¿ approach goes beyond the traditional approach of¿Personnel Management¿, having a broader focus on the necessaryinterdependence of all components with each other as well as the connection toother compartments of companies, whose success is seen in straightconnection with personnel measures.Thereby Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) can be seen asextension of HRM, and following the definition of Boxall (1996) it deals with therelationship between the strategic management of an organisation and themanagement of its human resources within this strategic context. In that casethe focus is on long-term personnel decisions as well as on the question how aninteraction of corporate and personnel strategy can be achieved.Initially this work is going to introduce and define different organizationalstrategies as well as key human resource strategies. This shall be followed by acritical evaluation of the concepts by opposing the pros to the cons. Therein thedifficulties and between Organisational Strategy, Human Resource Strategy andthe Organizational Environment shall be shown. Most of all the field of religion is affected by these words. Long time the church declared to know the absolute and unmistakable truth of our world. But today our science-stamped knowledge more and more disproves many dogmas spread by the church. Yet, religion is not the only field where this quote can be employed. Also in our daily activities and lives, people who overestimate their knowledge and capabilities normally never reach their aims. This does not always has to do with arrogance. Sometimes people simply think that what they know and do has to be right or perfect because it is what ¿the mass¿ would think or do. But in most cases it is better to think before acting, to be different from the mass, especially to think different to achieve things, the mass would not be able to achieve. No quote would be more appropriate for Edgar Allen Poe¿s story The Purloined Letter, than that from Seneca. Only the Detective Dupin, who is looking for the truth is able to find it, because he does not underestimate the gifts of his enemy. He does not think of himself to be a wise man but he thinks himself to be clever. And this is a gift which is sometimes more important than being wise. Poe constructs his hard-boiled detective story round just one very crucial object ¿ a letter. A letter that influences the people possessing it, using it. This document can be regarded as the main actor in the story. For this reason this paper ¿s aim is to analyse the role of ¿the letter¿ as it is only a sheet of paper, and at the same time more than just a sheet of paper. Its influence an significance in regard to text structure, construction of characters and course of the story will be examined. All this will be looked at with a constant connection to the philosophical and psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Derrida and Jacques Lacan. Especially Lacan¿s interpretations will be discussed, as he was occupied with Poe¿s story in his Seminar on ¿The Purloined Letter¿. The final summary shall bundle the gained information to a logical minimum and draw some conclusions from it.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Regensburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik ), course: Hauptseminar: James Joyce , language: English, abstract: The concept of transcendence is generally defined as the antonym of the notion of immanence. The material entities that are tangible and perceivable by the human senses are considered to form part of immanence, whereas transcendence is attributed to the divine and celestial spheres that elude the possibility to be grasped and handled in a way material objects can be dealt with. Owing to the fact that the two concepts of immanence and transcendence are considered to be poles apart, it is uncertain whether they are compatible with each other despite their antonymity. If the yawing gap between them should be reconcilable, this act of linking can only take place by means of a bridging relation of the complementary. An analogy to this would be the complementary relationship between allopathic and homeopathic remedies: allopathic pills are composed of chemical substances whose existence can easily be verified in a laboratory, whereas homeopathic tablets do not contain the physical substance of the respective herbs, metals or even venoms, but on the contrary the respective energetic correlate of them that eludes scientific methods of verification. Accepting the possibility of being cured by homeopathy is tantamount to embracing the existence of transcendence. By means of this comparison I seek to highlight that there must be mutual intermingling between the seemingly disparate antonyms of immanence and transcendence, owing to the fact that transcendence needs a material vehicle as a solid fundament in order to function and in order to be perceived by human beings.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

There were several philosophers like Niccolò Machiavelli, Immanuel Kant and Jürgen Habermas who were engaged in answering the basic question about how states could cooperate and how they could solve their conflicts.1 International organizations (IOs) are one response to the growing tension in world society between the process of integration and the desire for separation. The Industrial Revolution, the creation and integration of the world economy and at the same time the movement of ideas and people, as well as that of goods and services were the basics for the idea of globalisation. There was also a growth of nationalism, particularly strong in eighteenth- and nineteenthcentury Europe. Subjects became citizens, and there was a tendency to a sharper demarcation of identities based on language, religion and ethnicity. The growth of IOs is a reflection of the spirit of the times of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The United Nations Organization is the second try to order the international system and to minimise the ¿perils of anarchy.¿2 It¿s the second try to trust in an organization for securing the ¿peace of the world¿ by the people of the world, after the League of Nations. After the Second World War, the demand of governance in world affairs was growing. The UN are a product of rising interdependencies among the states in the international system.IOs are the operative objects in this essay. In the first part of this essay, I will provide some basic historical information, which gives a better understanding of the circumstances of the evolution of the United Nations System. After a definition of IOs, I will analyse the United Nations System, its function as an IO, by giving examples of the history of the UN. In this essay I will sketch, firstly, why IOs will be created. Secondly, I want to investigate if IOs matter. Thirdly, I will subject to closer scrutiny how the action of IOs do differ between the different issue areas. By answering these questions, I will deal with the theories on the current scientific debate. Coming from these theories, I will develop hypotheses and apply them to some cases exemplary for the most important historical periods.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Justus-Liebig Universität Gießen), course: Hauptseminar, language: English, abstract: For many years the study of Pidgin and Creole languages was widely regarded as marginal or frivolous, but recently, there has been growing interest in the study of these languages all over the world. They have not merely been studied for their own sake, but for the relevance to such concerns as language contact and change, historical linguistics, language learning, first and second language acquisition or language universals (cf. Smith 2002: 3). With this, the area of the Pacific and Indian Ocean has become increasingly significant for linguists. There are many reasons why the position of Tok Pisin, one of the two national languages of the independent nation of Papua New Guinea (with Hiri Motu as the other and alongside English as the official language), stands in the continued focus of scholarly attention. In a variety of ways, the position of Tok Pisin is like that of many other pidgin and creole languages elsewhere and it has a number of advantages as a source of data, as it is one of the best documented contact languages, however, ¿Tok Pisin is somewhat unusual among the Pidgins of the world in its gradual development over several generations as a second language before any extensive creolization took place.¿ (Smith 2002: 6). In spite of the work already carried out, there are still a few gaps in the current knowledge of some aspects of Tok Pisin and much of the literature is concerned only with the historical development of the language and the description of its linguistic properties, but it is not always clear how representative the features described are (cf. Smith 2002: 22).The purpose of this paper is to closer examine the language concerning its history, linguistic features and current situation. We will start with some general background information about Tok Pisin and the region where it is spoken, the development of Tok Pisin into a creole language, the current situation and the external history. Then continue with the linguistic features of Tok Pisin with regard to the specific phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon, and illustrate them on a text sample. And finally we will take a closer look at the educational system of Papua New Guinea, as well as its media, concerning the use of Tok Pisin. In particular, the relationship between Tok Pisin and its main lexifier language English is of primary importance and is explored in further detail in almost every section.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

Officially the euro replaced the national currencies, with the national currency units becoming sub-units of the euro but it existed only as scriptural or ¿book¿ money. That meant that first of all especially the world of business and finance began to use the euro in cashless operations. For them the transition happened immediately but on the other side for administrations and business the transition period took longer because they had to change their systems for accounting, pricing and payments over to the euro. To familiarise the people living in the euro-area-countries with the euro, dual pricing on labels was introduced and so the general public recognized the changing.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

In the year of 1994, Wal-Mart made its first move to China by selecting CITIC (China International Trust and Investment Corporation) group as local partner for the investment. Opening its first store in Shen-Zen in the year of 1996 and since then has grown to 81 stores in 20 more cities around china. In China, Wal-Mart is using adaptation strategy where it locally sourced its product although the organizational culture is standardized with the home country. Adaptation strategy does not apply only to the product wise, in term of the store formats are also adapted to the local cultures where racks height, and stores layout are also changed to meet local taste. From the macro-environment view of the china retailing industry, Wal-Mart will face threats on the political side where the government is not transparent enough in the policy making. Moreover, it is currently anticipating the economic big turnover by tightening the regulations on the land although China is still encouraging foreign investment. In China, Wal-Mart will face strong competition from its arch-rivals Carrefour and other strong local competitor such as Lian-Hua supermarkets and China Resources Enterprise of which both are the pioneers in the China retailing industry. The current position of Wal-Mart in China is still far away to be as the same level with them as Wal-Mart is unable to apply its superiority in logistics that win the competition in USA. Although it is a vast market, not all the populations have great spending power. It is a country of haven and have not, where the income disparity become a large issue. The middle income class only represents 25-30 millions people and mostly remain in the urban area. China is a very fragmented market and rich in cultures background which may trap companies to generalize them. Despite of it, China is certainly a very attractive market to invest in as the indicators in economic has been shining for the last twenty years.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

So it¿s not only some kindof business behavior necessary, it is also important to know something about the valuesmorals and attitudes for a better interaction. Even more important is a survey, if you plan amerger or an acquisition with a foreign company. Researches proof, that 50-70 % of allmergers don¿t succeed. This essay deals with the difficulty of consolidating two differentcorporate cultures to one common culture. In order to visualize this issue, DaimlerChrysler istaken as an example. Culture is an ¿everyday thing¿, it is present in every situation. It is a guideline for livingtogether in large groups, giving rules to act and behave. In most instances these facts are notwritten down but unexpressed rules. There are many definitions in literature. The mostwidespread definition is likely¿Culture refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudesmeanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of theuniverse, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course ofgenerations through individual and group striving¿.Already the Egyptians and Romans created their own distinct hierarchies, laws, knowledgebases and values and tried to preserve it over several hundred years. 20 pp. Deutsch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, European Business School - International University Schloß Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, course: Corporate Finance, language: English, abstract: Igniting in 2005, the discussion about highly leveraged transactions conducted by financial institutions became a matter of great controversy in German politics as well as in the media. Fuelled by an influential voice in politics, LBO firms became the face of capitalism¿s evil by calling them a ¿Heuschrecke¿, an animal much feared in history for its exploitive behaviour and risks to the mediaeval agrarian economy (Die Zeit, 2005). In terms of today¿s Heuschrecke, according to public voice, downsizing and raidingrepresent the major risks attributed. Empirics show that the risk of downsizing in LBOs is falsified and that the occurrence of raids is rather irrelevant in today¿s buyout universe. However, even if both risks heldeach would exhibit a comparably low impact on the economy as a whole. Contrary, the empirically evident high-impact risk of over-indebtedness in leveragedtransactions is widely neglected. The negligence of this risk-issue is dangerous, particularly with regard to the recent developments in the LBO industry, debt capital markets and the world¿s economy. First, analysing the latest LBOs conducted, it appearsthat the historical failures, such as the buyouts of Revco and RJR Narbisco are widely forgotten, as gearing ratios have become aggressive again. Second, the subprime crisis, which was exported from the US real estate sector into global capital markets, causedliquidity shortages ¿ AA rated banks were not willing to lend money to their equally rated peers anymore ¿ which led to a credit crisis. This credit crunch provoked that, even though in the US the prime rate has been reduced by 50 bp, and in the Eurozonethe prime rate was not increased as planed, ¿money became expensive¿; FIBOR, LIBOR and EURIBOR sharply increased and remained high. This resulted in high debt funding costs. Third, taking a look at the world economy, America might face an economicdownturn in the near future with decreasing consumption and increasing inflation. Each of the three aspects alone increases the default risk in a highly leveraged firm. In a scenario where all three jointly appear, the probability of default sharply increases. In addition to the risk named, the threat an LBO imposes on global debt capital markets is evident, therefore, it can not be ignored any longer in Europe. While it was already heavily discussed in Americäs late 80s buyout-boom, it slowly gains prominence in discussions about LBO transactions.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 48 pp. Englisch.
