Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Leipzig (Institut für Anglistik), language: English, abstract: This paper examines the themes of imprisonment and release in Kazuo Ishiguro's 1989 novel 'The Remains of the Day.' It discusses the relation between the two main narratives as well as the peculiarities of the language of Stevens, the butler at Darlington Hall, who is the protagonist and first person narrator. The author examines in what ways Stevens' demeanour resembles that of a man to whom has been granted release following a life spent in prison. The nature of this prison is investigated as well as whether Stevens is conscious of his imprisonment and if his journey through England provides him an opportunity for escape. The question of Stevens' self-awareness is an important one for this paper and draws upon an essay by Meghan Marie Hammond about Stevens' role as an author.…

Efficacy of Descartes' postulation is concluded in relation to the impact made upon the world, citing present reflections of the statement 'Cogito, Ergo Sum'. The history of Descartes' early life, his progression into philosophy, and modern influences are utilized to portray his greatest work, and profound effects upon the world. The importance of the Cogito is discussed in depth and in relation to modern society's interpretation of Cartesian philosophy. The background of Cartesian philosophy, explanations of the process, and meaning of ideas, serve to define the crux of the Cogito itself. Several postulates of famous philosophers contradicting Descartes' ideas of solipsism are included, as well as modern interpretations by famous authors, such as David Foster Wallace. 20 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Habitation, Urban Sociology, , language: English, abstract: Maslow's theory of needs puts shelter on a high pedestal and sees it as one of the most fundamental needs of mankind. This view is asserted by Karl Marx when he stated that life involves before anything else eating and drinking, a habitation, clothing and other things. The ability of a nation to provide decent housing for its citizenry has been among other things, a barometer considered in assessing its level of development. Globally, housing problems have been attributed to a considerable extent on the affordability of units provided and ease of construction. The housing deficit, affordability of housing units and cost of construction materials are among a myriad of problems that governments of developing countries are forced to grapple with. Most governments attempt controlling these problems through housing policies. In Ghana however, the grave housing deficit of 1,600,000 units has been influenced by a number of failed attempts at housing provision since independence. In investigating the rapid buildup of the housing deficit, this paper provides a historical account of housing policies and finance interventions made by colonial and post-colonial governments. In doing so, the study concentrates on the review of secondary data. From a historical viewpoint, the paper established that the gross failure of successive housing interventions by various governments contributed significantly towards worsening the housing deficit. 20 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 2,0, University of Bamberg, language: English, abstract: This paper will describe the importance of compliance in the ever-more complex international relations, discuss the effectiveness of sub-regimes and their importance to enforce the control of common goods, such as pollution of the seas. Analyzing international relations with the focus on compliance of actors with regimes or sub-regimes to control a common good is becoming more and more interesting, not only because over a very short period of time (compared to world history) all resources on this planet are becoming more and more rare, but also because every political actor in this anarchic world system can use, pollute, destroy, save or ignore it, with basically no real control mechanism. The paper is going to use two well know theories to analyze compliance and effectiveness of international regimes or regulations. The institutional approach will be used to discuss whether it is more likely for actors to comply or not and under which circumstances the level of compliance is high enough to turn an international regime into a useful and effective instrument to regulate and control a certain behavior. The theory of realism will be used to analyze the likelihood of compliance and effectiveness of international regimes from a realist's point of view. The two theories will be compared regarding the most coherent explanation of likelihood of compliance and its influence on the effectiveness of the sub-regimes OILPOL and MARPOL, which were created to control oil pollution of the seas. Which theory can best explain the effectiveness and the likelihood of compliance with these two sub-regimes Afterwards, compliance of actors with sub-regimes in the scope of the control and protection of common goods will give a detailed view on the problem of pollution of the seas, followed by a brief conclusion. 20 pp. Englisch.…

The companies' slogan is 'Drink to a brighter future' (Got Milk.) But what if the future isn't bright What if consuming milk products actually dims your future and makes you more susceptible to developing hazardous health problems Contrary to what most of society has been brainwashed to believe, consuming milk products is very detrimental to our health. However, the question of when this crucial capability for everyday life develops is a field quite new to and currently rather untouched by cognitive and neuronal sciences. It details how easy it is for a person to exploit and dehumanize women, and how it more easily facilitates the spread of sex trafficking victims. The Internet is a seething maelstrom of ideas: media, images, stories, sites and everything else imaginable. The greatest works of art can be found online, the histories of nations are diligently recorded for study, and yes, you can even order pizza online and have it delivered to your home.Is it so surprising that the Internet also serves as a vehicle through which human beings are sexually exploited Really, it oughtn't be. Considering that hardly a month goes by without at least ten news stories about internet pedophiles and sexual predators - but that's not the only sort of sexual exploitation on the web. The Internet is also being used to connect exploiters with the victims of human trafficking in a way that reduces their humanity to little more than a spreadsheet of sexual charged attributes. The Internet has allowed the sexual exploiters of women unfettered access to thousands of potential clients while shielding those consumers from the moral and ethical ramifications of their actions by portraying their exploitation of women as little more than an 'erotic massage'. 20 pp. Englisch. …

But what makes it that popular and funny Without any doubt one considerable reason are the minorities in British society, who become the butt of jokes: Immigrants, homosexuals, transvestites, people with special needs or those of different ethnicity.Making fun of minorities, however, also evokes criticism: Johann Hari (2005), commentator of The Independent, for instance, claims that '[Little Britain] is cluttered with ugly prejudices'. Thus, the question occurs if Little Britain really entertains on behalf of minorities, implying racism and hate towards minorities. In this paper I will try to answer this question by introducing Homi K. Bhabha's theory of defining ethnic and racial minorities and by asking if consolidated views on Asians and Africans become the humoristic substance for two main characters in Little Britain, the Asian lady-boy Ting Tong Macadangdang and Marjorie Dawes, the leader of a weight loss support group. In the next chapter I will focus on gender minorities, who will be introduced by Judith Butler's work on sex and gender. Her performance and performative theory shall help to analyze the two transvestites Emily and Florence and the young homosexual man named Daffyd Thomas from a small Welsh village.Chapter four summarizes the findings and tries to answer the question how exactly Little Britain works with making fun of minorities. 16 pp. Englisch. …

Since then many others have followed in his footsteps as recently as 2008, when Kate Humble, Dan Snow and Steve Backshall went to the island for a BBC documentary. My goal is to show that Martin Martin had a huge influence on those who thematized this remarkable island after him, even transcending genre, by analysing the BBC documentary Britain's Lost World and the feature film The Edge of the World to discover language and images used by Martin Martin. The question to be answered is: Has the language and imagery of Martin Martin persevered throughout the centuries and transcended genres In the first chapter I will analyse the different depictions of St. Kilda, its wildlife and inhabitants in the three different texts. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Hamburg, course: The Structure of English- Linguistik Vertiefung, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the process of third language acquisition by Turkish immigrants in Germany. This process is unique and distinct from their first and second language acquisition, as it is influenced by first and second language acquisition.Cultural diversity in different societies around the world, in the 21st century, places a great emphasis on the value of language acquisition. Whether it is in business, politics or other international interactions, and further aspects of life, in particular education, language acquisition has become more and more important. As a result, bilingualism is seen as a norm rather than an exception in many societies around the globe. Although considered fairly recent, linguistics have studied the acquisition of a first language by infants and second language acquisition in children and adults with varying approaches in the past decades. However, people are not only increasingly exposed to numerous languages in multilingual settings but they are also learning them. This is ascribed to the movement of people from one society to another resulting in an increased contact with different cultures.Due to that fact, researchers have begun to put an emphasis on studies about multilingualism and the distinct acquisition of languages past a second non-native language. While many researchers classified any non-native language acquisition as second language acquisition in the past, recent studies discuss the phenomenon of third language acquisition. In this day and age it has become common that migrants who are proficient in their native language and have moved to or are born in a multicultural country will not only learn the official language of that same country but also an additional foreign language. Because of this growing phenomenon bilingualism and its effects on third language acquisition have also gained more attention by researchers in linguistic studies.According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany and a microcensus which has been conducted in the year 2013, 16.5 million out of the total population of roughly 81 million people in Germany had a migrant background. The largest ethnic group of immigrants, who either migrated to Germany or were born in Germany as second generation immigrants, is comprised of Turks. On this account language acquisition of Turks living in multicultural Germany and their integration in terms of language is significant to the study of third language acquisition. 20 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1,3, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: In my term paper, I will examine the narrative structure in 'Memento' which switches between chronological narration and reversed temporality. With respect to this unique narrative structure, I will take a closer look at the black-and-white and colour sequences, the opening sequence and the outstanding and resolvent scene 22/A, especially regarding the cinematography used. In the further course of my work, you will learn of the essential role of the unreliable narrator regarding my thesis and finally what impact the fabula construction in 'Memento' has on his viewers.'Causes and their effects are basic to narrative, but they take place in time'. This quotation from Bordwell's and Thompson's work Film Art, an Introduction does not only show a fundamental principle of narration but furthermore depicts a possibility to manipulate the spectator's understanding of a story. Christopher Nolan's 'Memento' is one example of what a complex narration can be. The film shows two separate stories of Leonard, an ex-insurance investigator who suffers anterograde amnesia and attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he can remember. On the one hand there is a forward moving storyline, the black-and-white scenes while the other one, the colour sequences, tells the story backwards. Although the story behind the film is rather simple, the narrative structure is extremely complex and clever, which demands constant attention from its spectators. This term paper will deal with the methods used in 'Memento' which mislead the audience's understanding of the story. My thesis is therefore: Narrative complexity in Christopher Nolan's 'Memento' - Narrative structure, Narrator's unreliability, fabula construction and cinematography as key elements for the spectator's manipulation. Apart from the film 'Memento', the central literature I will work with is the essay by Stefano Ghislotti 'Narrative Comprehension Made Difficult: Film, Form and Mnemonic Devices in 'Memento'', the documentary 'Anatomy of a Scene' about the making of 'Memento', a text by Andy Klein named 'Everything You Wanted to Know about 'Memento'' and different filmic narrativity by Jakob Lothe, David Herman and Edward Branigan. In addition to that, there is a self-generated sequence analysis attached to the term paper in order to have an overall view of the scenes I take a closer look at. 20 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of Greenwich, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the influence of Asian cultural identity on Global Marketing. Over the course of the past decades globalisation has had a great impact on the every day lives of people around the globe. Due to the advances in technology and new inventions, such as the internet and therefore the diminishing of boundaries, people from various countries of the world are now more than ever able to be connected to each other, travel and overcome far distances, as well as purchase and consume products and services from all over the world. The benefits of globalisation not only influence people in their daily lifes, but can also be applied to the way in which companies organise themselves as well as operate in their home and foreign markets. The rise of global companies that sell and market products in foreign countries affected organisational work and created the need for global marketing strategies. In order for these strategies to work the different cultural backgrounds and values of customers need to be taken into account. Mooij supports this idea by pointing out, that in order for marketing or advertising to be effective it 'must include values that match the values of the consumers being addressed' (Mooij, 1998, p.91). Mooij explains further, that the way in which consumers behave and are motivated largely depends on their culture, which is why marketing strategies need to be relevant to the culture of the consumer they are trying to address (Mooij M. D., 1998). This explains why marketing managers today face a number of challenges and are influenced by the cultural identity of the country they are marketing a product in. Asia has one of the largest economies of the world which makes it extremely attractive for companies seeking to expand globally. East Asia alone is home to about 20 percent of the world's population and is likely to make up an equally high share of the world trade (Chaze, 2010). In the following, this essay will try to explain how the Asian culture in terms of group, family and status orientation might culturally influence the way in which foreign companies market their products to Asian consumers as well as discuss possible practical measures that should be taken by international marketers in this context. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2004 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 1,3, University of Augsburg, course: Academic Writing, language: English, abstract: Stereotypes and prejudice are omnipresent and therefore influence every person in his or her perception. Undoubtedly, most of us are unaware of this fact. As a phrase from the 'Handwörterbuch der Psychologie' states, 'The prejudice of our own impartiality is the strongest prejudice of all'(Asanger, & Wenninger, p. 539). Gender stereotype refers to the subjective perception of what a male or female should be or how one should behave. For example, a stereotypic Hong Kong Chinese person would perceive that females should be gentle, sympathetic and shy, whereas males should possess strong personality and leadership abilities (Fung, & Ma, 2000). Gender roles can change in alignment with changes in society. However, the Arima (2003) study determined that television advertisements in Japan still depicted the old gender stereotype of 'men at work and women at home', even though the rate of women attending college and of women in the working population has increased. Moreover, the younger generation in Japan supports the new gender stereotype of 'men at work, women at both work and home'. In the US, television advertisements reflected gender role expectations, as well. Products that are assumed to appeal to female customers are presented exclusively by a female main character. Respectively, products predominantly designed for men, are exclusively presented by male characters (Blain, & McElroy, 2002). Although gender representation has been studied extensively in the US, little is known about the portrayal of gender stereotypes in German and Asian television advertisements. This study proposes to fill this gap by analysing German television advertisements and by comparing the findings to the results of latest studies on gender stereotypes in East Asia. 20 pp. Englisch. …
