Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3 (A), Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institute for Anglistics/American Studies), language: English, abstract: Although Leslie Marmon Silkös complete works have received exemplary reviews, Ceremony seems to be the most talked about and recognized for its literary achievement. One reason for this large attention is the strange narrative form due to the combination of the Indian ¿storytelling¿, myth, poetry and a plot that takes place in a modern western1 environment. Another reason for the remarkable success of this novel is Silkös way to show the negative repercussions on Native Americans caused by racism, alcoholism, dislocation, poverty as well as the industrial exploitation of the land.In this paper I will discuss one of the principal themes presented in Leslie Silkös Ceremony: the issue of Native American identity. In the first part I will briefly introduce the characters of Tayo and Rocky, two Native Americans who grew up on a reservation for the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico. After that I will examine the similarities between these two young men who both take part in the Second World War and make horrible experiences. In the main part of this paper I will try to find out the differences between Tayo and Rocky in order to explain their different ways of searching their own identity. Furthermore I will explore the sources of Tayös selfdestructive behaviour and his problem of alienation. Therefore I will have to ponder on the following questions: How does the white culture influence these characters Do both men suffer from the loss of Indian self-esteem What are the effects of internalized racism and colonization on the health of Tayo Why is Tayo able to return to the community to lead a stable and productive life In the final comment there will be a concluding assessment and a summary of the theme.…

Studies (School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)), course: French Politics, language: English, abstract: François Mitterrand¿s election as president of the French Republic on May 10, 1981 marked the beginning of a new era in French politics. For the first time in the Fifth Republic, a socialist had become head of state. The new prime minister Pierre Mauroy formed a ministry that consisted mainly of socialists. Their power was enormous after winning clearly the majority in the National Assembly one month after the presidential elections, reducing both the communists and the conservatives by half. Mitterrand formed a coalition of socialist and communist parties whose goal was to redistribute power between state and society and within society itself. This paper¿s purpose is to assess the achievements and the drawbacks of the socialist experiment launched by Mitterrand in 1981. It proceeds in a chronological order; thus the first part is dedicated to Keynesian redistribution and its limits in 1981-82, the second will deal with austerity measures implemented from 1982-84, the third addresses Fabius¿ modernization efforts from 1984-86, and the fourth will cover the 1986-88 cohabitation period. The fifth part will be devoted to the relationship between state and society under Mitterrand. Finally, some concluding remarks will finish the paper in the sixth part. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Darmstadt (Institut für Betriebswirtschaftslehre), 100 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Capital markets all over the world have undergone fundamental changes in the last twenty years and the most prominent developments have been: disintermediation and securitization, globalization and financial innovations. This process has been accelerated by worldwide deregulation tendencies, as well as progress and global proliferation of transactional data processing and transmission technology. The rational investor disposing of limited time and means for making a decision has been thus confronted with new challenges in a global environment dominated by almost infinite and very complex investment possibilities. Because of limited resources, private clients as well as institutional investors have been increasingly overwhelmed by internally assessing credit risk and have sought for additional evaluations from external specialists in order to build an opinion about the risk and return profile of an obligation . With this background, rating issued by major international rating agencies has come to play a key role in the making of investment decisions and in supervisory regulation. It is especially important in this context to understand the impact of rating changes on capital markets. The influence of rating changes on bond prices is subject of controversial discussions. Despite the undisputable importance of rating in markets, the debate has been fueled by spectacular insolvencies of high rated companies, such as Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat. Accordingly, measuring and assessing the information content of ratings has been in the United States the object of intense theoretical and empirical research for decades, and the lively ongoing dispute surrounding. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2 (B), LMU Munich (America Institute), language: English, abstract: In America, abortion is a topic that is especially discussed by the differentiating pro-life and pro-choice groups. They talk about whether women should be allowed to have an abortion or not, and almost every American has an opinion on the issue. One might ask if this is necessary considering the fact that laws do not prohibit abortion. But in the US, the overall question of morality, conservatism, but also individualism and equality plays an important role and is the basis for these discussions. Therefore, it is important to have a look at the history of abortion to understand the controversial opinions and the importance of the topic for the public. Furthermore, one has to understand the procedure of abortion and think about why women decide not to have a child. The fact that pro-life- and pro-choice-groups are trying to convince others of their attitude towards abortion plays an important role, as well as concerns about the future. To ease the beginning of the reading and to make the reader familiar with the issue, the paper starts with a definition of abortion.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Innsbruck (Department of English), course: The Irish Literary Revival, language: English, abstract: Love was one of William Butler Yeats's great inspirations. It was love that kept him moving and developing. It was love that confused him and made him reflect. It was love that shattered him and made him mourn. Yeats's experience with love was rich and fulfilling as well as frustrating and devastating. In order to come to a better understanding of Yeats's love poetry, we need to take a look into his private life: 'Yeats met the fiery revolutionary [Maud Gonne] in 1889. He fell deeply in love with her and would propose to her in 1891, 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1916. Gonne had no use for Yeats's proposals. However, she did have a use for his talents. Gonne would use Yeats for his ability as an orator. Maud Gonne, dragging him at her heels on nationalist agitations, soon found that he was a natural orator and could easily dominate committees. Maud Gonne would continue to turn Yeats proposals down, yet she continued to be the catalyst for the finest love poetry Yeats would ever create. Gonne would once ask for Yeats's help in London, ending a brief but happy love affair with Olivia Shakespear. Sensing divided loyalty, Shakespear would end the affair and it was shortly thereafter that Lady Gregory would save Yeats from a potentially more tragic end, like the poets of the tragic generation' (cf. nadn.navy).Yeats really loved Maud Gonne. She was the love of his life, and still, she would never really react to, let alone return his love. Yeats has experienced the many different facets of love through this continuous interaction between his everlasting true and sincere affection and dedication and her cold and calculating rejection. But although this may be a personal tragedy it also resulted in something positive and beautiful, namely Yeats's love poetry Maud Gonne inspired him to. Yeats managed to deal with all his positive and negative experiences in a productive way and included them into his poetry. Maud Gonne once even said to him that she could not stop rejecting him as he would not write such beautiful poetry about her anymore then. As said, Yeats's perception and concepts of love can be identified in his poetry. Furthermore, we can identify a development of Yeats's depiction of love in his poetry. We can find many different sides of love in Yeats's poems. In some poems, Yeats describes it as an almost divine power. In other poems, he starts doubting whether love is really that fulfilling or not. And in further poems, he even focuses on the dark and destructive sides of love. These different concepts of love will be described in this paper through the analysis of selected poems.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1, University of Hamburg (Kunstgeschichtliches Institut), course: Hauptseminar, language: English, abstract: 'If I perish, don't let my paintings die, exhibit them!' While speaking these words in his Belgian exile in 1942, Felix Nussbaum did not know that he had only two more years to live until the terror regime of National-Socialism would murder him and his wife, Felka Platek, in Auschwitz. Being only forty years of age when murdered, the artist seemed to have abandoned all hope after being forced to live in exile and under constant threat of discovery since 1933. Nevertheless, this personal hopelessness did not include the destiny of his artwork, for which Felix Nussbaum cared as long as possible. 'The unpainted paintings of Felix Nussbaum demand nothing less than to become visible to the contemplating eye' and so Daniel Libeskind built a museum in Osnabrück to house the largest collection of Nussbaum's paintings as well as to create 'a profound place for the encounter of the future and the past and not only a testament to an impossible fate.' In July 1998, 54 years after Felix Nussbaum's deportation to Auschwitz, the museum opened its gates to the public. 'The Museum without an Exit', as Daniel Libeskind coined his building, challenges the traditional idea of museums as 'Temples of Contemplation.' Libeskind insists on emotional and physical experiences evoked when entering the museum's space. His difficult building does not allow visitors to be passive spectators, since the museum does not simply offer space for distributing works of art. Rather, Libeskind's building urges people to get closer to the experience of Felix Nussbaum and hence sets new standards in regard of museum-building. …

Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of London (English Department), course: Contemporary London in Literature, language: English, abstract: Zadie Smith, having a Jamaican mother and an English father, just wanted to write a funny book in which not everybody is white, she did not think much aboutmulticulturalism in London because it is nothing to talk about, it is normal. However, the book became one of the best novels dealing with multiculturalism.A multicultural society consists of two or more different cultures which are different in language, religion, traditions and their systems of values. Britain and especially London became multicultural mainly by immigrants who left their countries mostly for political, demographic or economical reasons in the search for freedom and a better standard of living. Some so-called push- factors are political suppression, bad working conditions or natural disasters. Pull- factors are religious and political freedom and better jobs and chances to learn some money, for example.Britain itself encouraged people from overpopulated and underemployed Commonwealth countries to immigrate because it needed cheap workers to staff the semi-skilled and non-skilled vacancies and to rebuild the war-shattered economy. Most of the immigrants worked in the National Health Service, public transport or in the manufacturing service. Many of them got only low-paid manual jobs and became victims of discriminatory practices. These immigrants started the transformation of Britain and especially of London into a multicultural society.White Teeth is the story of three families from three different cultural backgrounds, the English-Jamaican Jones, the Bangladeshi Iqbals and the Jewish Chalfens, told mainly between 1974 and 1992, set in Willesden, a multicultural suburb in North London, where Zadie Smith herself lives. The novel is told in the tones and structures of Jamaican and Bangladeshi English which makes the novel even more lively.…

Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: 1.0 (A), National University of Singapore (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), course: International Security Issues, language: English, abstract: This essay will ask about the future role of force in international politics by challenging the widely acknowledged perception that the end of Cold War gave impact to an essential paradigm shift of International Relations. It aims to explain why the scholars of International Relations, as well as the actors of global politics, face a widening gap between an accelerated implementation of international institutions and an increasingly troubled world, hit by the violent outbreak of ethnic and national conflicts, the rise of global terrorism and a new cultural and religious conservatism. Today we are in the really paradox situation that the bipolarity of the Cold War - long perceived as the most frightening constellation of the international system - can be seen as its stabilizing factor. To find the origins of the resulting disillusion it is necessary to ask for the reasons that made the western actors in the 1990's believe that they succeeded. What made them believe that the end of Cold War meant the extermination of the use of force Did the end of the Cold War really impose a paradigm shift! Did it really change the nature of International Relations The thesis provided in this essay will be: no! It didn't! It has to be shown that Cold War only represented a common constellation of the international system, which can be often found throughout history; that the contemporary confusion exists because the paradigms of International Relations are based on a misinterpretation of Hobbes' state of nature; and that the use of force is the only continuous variable and therefore can be seen as a paradigm of international relations. This approach aims to lead the debate back to an actorcentered model of international relations, which tends to reduce force by a more flexible, constructivist interpretation of political leadership in the background of the actor's contemporary political and economic environment. …

Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2, University of Hannover, course: Language and Gender, language: English, abstract: In the following paper I will deal with the concept of gender-neutral language. I will begin by looking at certain false generics that are commonly used in English Language and consider the position of gender-neutral language theorists to these false generics. Due to the fact, that the gender-neutral language theory offers very general recommendations and guidelines i felt difficult to do a corpus analysis. That is why I tried to concentrate only on the main positions of gender-neutral language theory and focus on central issues within he scope of this approach.I concentrate on two particular false generics that are at the focus of gender -neutral language theory; 'Man' as a generic form used in the English language to define male and female and the ambiguous use of the pronoun 'He' in contexts where both sexes are to be addressed. In the second and third chapter I will take a closer look at these false generics and exemplify how they create misunderstanding and actually promote a male centred perception. In the fourth chapter I will deal with the guidelines and recommendations of language planners and gender-neutral language theorists and work out their main positions. It will be argued, that language change is not an easy undertaking but requires perseverance and consistent argumentation. The biggest challenge for language planners who want to implement genderneutral language is perhaps the persistent resistance towards the understanding, that gender - neutral language is not an issue concerning only feminists.I will conclude by evaluating the gender-neutral language theory in terms of its practicability and give a personal opinion on the approach.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1, University of Hamburg (Amerikanistik), course: Hauptseminar, language: English, abstract: In the first decade of the 20th century, when Lewis W. Hine took his first photo series at Ellis Island, 7 million immigrants came to the United States of America. In 1907 immigration's peak was reached, when almost 3.000 immigrants, most of whom came from Southern and Eastern Europe, entered the New World on a daily basis. After Ellis Island had re-opened its gates for the immigration procedure in 1900, more than 75 percent of all immigrants who came to the United States entered the country through the port of New York City. In regard of these immigration numbers, one needs to ask how the inhabitants of New York City and American citizens in general reacted towards this mass immigration. In comparison to former immigrants, who mostly came from Northern and Western Europe, these 'new' immigrants were not welcomed at all. Severe prejudices had already developed towards persons from countries which many native-born Americans seemed to consider as 'undesirable' ones at that time. Mainly people's fear resulted from ignorance, because to them these immigrants seemed to be an indistinguishable mass which overcrowded America. Many people feared that these immigrants would take away their jobs and living-space. There seemed to be little sympathy for those needy homeless, whose foreign appearance and different customs irritated the citizens of New York and elsewhere in the country. When Lewis W. Hine went to Ellis Island to portrait those 'huddled masses', he must have had all those fears and prejudices against these newly arrivers in mind. Undoubtedly, there was a 'great public interest in the issue of immigration' when he started his project in 1904 and Hine 'was by no means the first, or only, photographer to work at Ellis Island.' Nevertheless, his approach seems to differ from the ones of other photographer of his time. Interestingly, something had happened at Ellis Island to make the teacher Hine want to become a professional photographer. I will try to reveal Hine's personal opinion towards the social problem of immigration as well as his approach for betterment. Furthermore, I will discuss his photographic aims and goals by examining selected photographs of his first photographic series at Ellis Island.…

Neuware - Essay from the year 1999 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1 (A), University of Portsmouth (School of Language and Area Studies), course: American Cinema Studies (Level 2/3), language: English, abstract: Even more than a half century after his last appearance in the film Limelight (1952) and decades after his death in 1977, Charles Spencer Chaplin is one of the most famous characters and well-known actors of all times and is regarded as the greatest creative figure in the movies. Chaplin's capacity for comic invention and his high quality of film output are outstanding among the film producers of his time. His comedies and satires, most of them directed by Chaplin himself, used to amuse people all around the world and still make us laugh today. Apart from acting, directing and composing the music for his own films by himself, Chaplin developed his own techniques for the creation of comic effects, which can always be identified as his own style and is distinguished from those of other comedians of the twenties, for example Lloyd, Keaton or Langdon. This essay will focus on these techniques and their development during the career of Charlie Chaplin.…

Bei Sprachen ist dies nicht anders. Wenn zwei Sprachen lange Zeit nebeneinander existieren, liegt es nahe, dass sie sich gegenseitig beeinflussen. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, Bielefeld University, 4 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The discussion about aims, content and methods of foreign language lessons resulted in demands for a broader integration of intercultural learning. Jörg Roche, who dedicated one chapter of his book Interkulturelle Sprachdidaktik: Eine Einführung to the role of intercultural language didactics in the teaching and learning of foreign languages, makes specific suggestions about restructuring the traditional concepts of foreign language lessons. According to him, the best learning success is achieved when intercultural learning and foreign language teaching are integrated. He explains conclusively that language and culture are inseparably bound to one another. Roche also warns not to use isolated or poorly researched pieces of cultural information, since this would lead to a falsified image of the target culture and prevent the learners from authentic language use. Roche s appeal illustrates the growing need of intercultural communication. Young pupils in Germany do not only live in a country that maintains contact with cultures all over the world, but they are also part of a multicultural society that is mirrored by the school classes. Foreign language lessons offer the opportunity to help them deal with it and prepare them for living in a multicultural society. After the introduction of English as a foreign language as an obligatory school subject in the classes 3 and 4 of the primary schools in 2003, it is now possible for the young learners in Germany to exhaust their enormous language learning potential more effectively. However, how they should be taught, and what exactly, is still discussed extensively. The new school subject made it necessary to develop a new curriculum and new school books, which were supposed to meet the needs of the young foreign language learners and the conditions of the guidelines. Considering the textbooks Bumblebee 3 and Bumblebee 4 (Schroedel 2003) as examples, this paper examines in how far the school books concur with the regulations concerning intercultural learning. Of course, school books do not solely represent what is taught in the lessons; the way the teachers uses them and what they teach additionally must also be regarded for that. Yet, the books play a central role in the lessons. Tasks, content and especially the illustrations have much influence on how the lessons are perceived by the pupils. Furthermore, the pupils can take the books home where they can work autonomously.…

Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Free University of Berlin (John-F.-Kennedy Institut), language: English, abstract: Much has been written about the homosexual and political playwright Tony Kushner. Interestingly, not so much has been said about his Jewish background and its impact on his dramatic work. Especially, his most acknowledged play 'Angels in America - A Gay Fantasia on National Themes' which is mainly set in New York City 'this strange place, in the melting pot where nothing melted' as Rabbi Isidor Chemelwitz observes in the first scene of 'Millennium Approaches', is highly concerned with Judaism in general and American Jewry in particular. Naturally, different readings of Kushner's two-part play are possible. Nevertheless, it is crucial to reveal and analyze the importance of the Jewish tone and setting in 'Angels in America' to fully understand Kushner's complex work. Kushner picks out the topic of religion and traditional heritage in our secular, modern world as one of his central themes. As Hilary de Vries wrote in her Chicago Tribune critique, 'Kushner credits much of his interest in religion to his family background as part of the little known but thriving Jewish community in [Lake Charles] Louisiana.' When Kushner moved to New York City in 1974, the Jewish population of the city was over one million making it the largest Jewish community in the world. Even though 'Kushner struggles with an ambivalence toward Judaism due to homophobic traditions within his faith,' as James Fisher stated, he nevertheless strongly connects to his own Eastern European roots. Kushner's ambivalence is that of American Jewry in general, being torn between the modern, secular society and historical ties to ethnic and religious identity. This dilemma is put forward through the play's fine-nuanced Jewish characters. Furthermore, the play circles around general religious allegories, which origins can be traced back to writings of Judaism, such as the Old Testament and the Kabbalah, as well as to Christian traditions. …

Neuware - Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, grade: 1,0, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (University of Applied Sciences Hamburg), course: Medienpädagogik, language: English, abstract: This article will discuss if, and to what extent, media educational social work is practiced in the German public access television channel 'Offener Kanal Hamburg.' 'Offener Kanal Hamburg' is producing and broadcasting programs made by non-professional local residents, many of them socially marginalized groups, like migrants or old people; but also children and teenagers are supported in their 'first steps' as TV-producers. These groups are trained and supported by permanently employed editors. I will begin by describing the role of 'Offener Kanal' for media educational work in general. Then I will give a more precise definition of media educational social work - as a part of social work. I will conclude by determining whether the work of public access channels can be described as media educational social work and I will show the role that institutions like the 'Offener Kanal' play for cooperative projects in the area of media educational social work.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.

Starting with an analysis of the existing pay-as-you-go systems by describing the functionality and economic conditions required to make such a system work, it states that the former systems are not appropriate anymore due to major changes in the ecomomic environment (eg. demographic change). Taking the ongoing, significant changes in the most important variables that affect a pension system as given, it shows how future pnesion systems should be shaped.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Essay from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, University of Otago (Department of Management), course: Business Policy, language: English, abstract: This work answers the question What are the strengths and weaknesses of the systems approach as used by contingency writers in analysing organisations To provide a sound insight into the strengths and weaknesses, the notion of contingency theory needs to be de-fined and its development understood. So, the first chapter displays the most significant ideas and characteristics of contingency theory and briefly follows the developmental steps of how contingency theory found its way into management on the basis of some of its most influential writings. The second and the third chapter take the contrary positions for strengths or for weaknesses of the contingency approach.Nevertheless, this paper does not provide a complete or conclusive view of contingency theory, the selection of the writings and the deliberate focus on uncertainty and envi-ronment as contingency factors with just a short reference to other factors like strategy, tech-nology and size is intended. The interpretation of strengths and weaknesses can, if not derived from the literature, be considered as biased by my personal subjective view and is, therefore, a limitation of this work. The essay, finally, concludes with a brief appreciation and evaluation of contingency theory.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Industrial Management, grade: 2, Glynd r University, Wrexham known as NEWI (Mechanical engineering), language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the impact of SPC for an organization. What SPC can do for an organization as well as what the organization has to provide for SPC to work successfully. This paper doesn't discuss, how SPC works or how it can be installed into an organization. It discusses the requirements for SPC to work successfully as well as the output of SPC, and how it can be used for the organization to move forward, on the basis of organization, which do already use SPC successfully.(Oakland 1990 a) Statistic process control (SPC) is a strategy for reducing variability, the cause of most quality problems. Variation of products can be caused by nearly everything, delivering times, in ways of doing things, raw material, people attitudes, equipment, and its use, maintenance, and so one. SPC can help to improve processes continually by reducing its variability. The basic question therefore, which should be asked recurrently is:Can we do the job more consistently Therefore, there must be willingness, to implement changes in every parts of business, to achieve continuous improvement. SPC is not just control; it enables reliable and consistent processes, and continuous improvement, which is important to fulfil long-term requirements of the customers, and the company. Quality can't be inspected it must be built. Therefore creating quality is not the job of the quality department, it's the job of everybody in the company. Knowledge of the current statement of the process is essential for both operational as well as strategic decisions for design and technology functions. The following questions helps to get this information, which should be asked contiguously.- Can we do the job correctly - Are we doing the job correctly - Have we done the job correctly - Could we do the job better.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1 (A), Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (Corporate Finance), language: English, abstract: Options are a financial instrument with which one can reduce risk. Financial options are used by companies for this purpose and come in many forms, for example commodity, currency or interest rate options.Options are also embedded in real investment decisions, for example in the form that a company gains the possibility (or option) to make a very profitable future investment (B), but only under the condition that the original investment (A) is made. This possibility increases uncertainty about the future, and has a value to the purchaser of the asset (A) at the time of purchase. Option pricing attempts to value this. This offers an alternative form of investment appraisal to the traditional Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) methods such as Net Present Value (NPV), that do not and can not account for and place a value on this uncertainty. There are two major methods of valuing options. One is the binomial method and the other is the Black & Scholes Formula. The options valued here all use the Binomial Model assuming European Options.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 2, Glynd r University, Wrexham known as NEWI (Business school), language: English, abstract: During the last decades there was a change in organisations from managing vertical to managing horizontal. The organisations started to become process orientated instead of function orientated, and new management styles, like total quality management, just in time, benchmarking, or business process reengineering appeared. Which lead into an increase of overheads.(Drury 2004a) The most important cost factors changed from direct costs like labour costs or materials, into indirect costs like set-up costs or administration costs. Therefore the traditional costing systems became more or less useless, because they presented poor cost information, which leads into decision errors. Therefore the ABC- system of cost calculation seems to be a solution. The most important difference between traditional systems, and the ABC system, is the breakdown of overheads. In traditional costing systems, they are divided into cost centres, and accumulated products by using direct cost drivers. In the ABC system, they will be assigned to activities, which creates a greater number of cost centres with different cost drivers. They will be accumulated to products in the percentage of usage of an activity. In this paper the ABC-system of cost calcualton is discussed and how it can be inplemented successfully within an organisation. Attention is also trwon to the most important failure in implementation of an ABC-approach, which should be avoided. To establish an ABC-approach within an organisation more than just a new calculation system is needed. An ABC-approach has to be implemented in the management system (ABM) and in the budgetting process (ABB). All in all, Activity based costing is much more than juast a costing tool. Successfully implemented it will help to understand costs better, an make the right decisions.…
