This fertile and w…ell watered area was coveted by industrialists who manufactured Sydney's sugar, beer and gin. Pollution, planning disasters, illegal subdivisions, substandard buildings, and floods poured filth into the unsewared slums, all contributing to degrade Chippendale throughout the 19th century. Chippendale today, cut off by busy thoroughfares between Central Station and Sydney University, attracts residents to quiet but cluttered streets because of its closeness to the city centre and educational institutions.
