Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The creation of the National Health Service was the most significant of the many reforms of the post-war Labour government. The man responsible was Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan. The son of a Welsh miner, he became a local trade union leader at only nineteen and in 1929 was elected as a Labour MP. Bevan believed the war was Britain's opportunity to create a new society, a position he maintained throughout the conflict. When war ended in 1945, the landslide Labour victory gave him the chance to make this vision a reality. Known for his impassioned oratory, Bevan's fundamental belief that the new NHS should be freely available to all was ultimately at odds with a government struggling to balance the books. He resigned in 1951 over the introduction of charges for prescriptions and glasses. With the NHS requiring an ever-increasing share of national income, this updated edition considers Bevan's legacy as the future of the health service he created is fought over as never before. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. How did Syria's revolution lose its way? Drawing on the author's firsthand knowledge of the country's complex religious and ethnic communities, this book illuminates the darker recesses of Syria's history, politics, and society. With the unique perspective of an Arabic-speaking British woman, Diana Darke became deeply embedded in all levels of Syrian society when she bought and restored a house in a mixed Sunni/Shi'a neighborhood of the walled Old City of Damascus. In September 2012, as fighting intensified and millions were forced to flee their homes, she offered her house as a sanctuary to friends. By following her experiences and struggles with the realities of life on the ground inside Syria, the reader will arrive at a clearer understanding of why the country remains locked in conflict and why most ordinary Syrians are caught between a repressive government and a splintering opposition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Britain's relationship with Russia is surprisingly under-explored. When the two formed a pragmatic alliance and fought together at Navarino in 1827, it was overwhelmingly the work of the British prime minister, George Canning. His death brought about a volte-face that would see the countries fighting on opposite sides in the Crimean War and jostling for power during the Great Game. It was not until the 1917 revolution that another statesman had a defining impact on relations between Britain and Russia: Winston Churchill opposed Bolshevism, yet he never stopped advocating diplomatic and military engagement with Russia. In the Second World War, he recognised earlier than most the necessity of allying with the Soviets against the menace of Nazi Germany - as well as the post-war threat to freedom posed by the Soviets themselves.Bringing us into the twenty-first century, Owen chronicles how both countries have responded to their geopolitical decline. Drawing on both imperial and Soviet history, he explains the unique nature of Putin's autocracy and addresses Britain's return to 'blue water' diplomacy. With Owen's characteristic insight and expertise, Riddle, Mystery, and Enigma depicts a relationship governed by principle as often as by suspicion, expediency, and outright necessity. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Far from Winston Churchill's jibe that he was a "modest little man with plenty to be modest about," in this acclaimed biography, comprehensively revised in this new edition, Francis Beckett makes the case that Clement Attlee's reputation as Britain's greatest ever reforming Prime Minister is fully deserved. With new research, thinking and stories (many of them never published before) Beckett compelling shows Attlee's relevance to a new political generation. Far from being a dull, grey man, he was a poet and a dreamer. Here is an eloquent portrait of Attlee the man, not only his remarkable political life but also of the poetry he wrote, the poetry he loved, and more of the famous Attlee anecdotes. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. A region steeped in fable and myth, Provence is a cultural crossroads of European history. A source of inspiration to artists, poets, and troubadours, it is now an enviable refuge for the wealthy and fashionable. Nicholas Woodsworth, who was born in Ottawa, Canada, married into a Provencal family and has lived in the region for decades. Lovingly recounting vivid details of life in Provence, he provides here a welcome antidote to the typical rose-tinted, romantic view of it being a perennially sunny destination for tourists. The true Provencaux have always lived a hard life close to the land and the rhythms of the seasons. And it is in the revelation and understanding of these lives, of the Provencal people, that the truths of the region are to be found. As much a study of Provencal culture and history as a memoir and travel book, this is a deep and soulful investigation into a way of life that remains very distinct from that of the rest of France.". Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Repeatedly decorated for valour during the First World War, Erwin Rommel went on to lead German Panzer divisions in North Africa, becoming known as the Desert Fox. Stripping away layers of wartime German and Allied propaganda, Reuths dramatic reassessment of Rommels life finds him at odds with his popular legacy. His purported involvement with the 20 July plotters was a myth. In fact, he remained mindlessly loyal to his Fuhrer until forced to commit suicide in 1944. Colluding with the Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels to bolster his fame, Rommel was also a useful figure for the Allies in exaggerating his battlefield prowess they succeeded in making the incompetence of their own campaign in North Africa. This revelatory biography shows Rommel was no master strategist caught between duty and resistance, but the embodiment of the tragic German choice to follow Hitler unquestionably into the abyss. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Germany is a country with a deep and complex history. Arguably there is no greater culture and no country has contributed more to the development of human ideas and creativity. Nor has any country sunk deeper into the abyss or experienced such redemption and renewal. It is this that instils the German story with a profound and universal significance. A generation after the fall of the Berlin Wall much of Europe remains uncertain about its identity and direction. As Britain prepares to leave the European Union these uncertainties are greater than ever. The euro and migrant crisis have seen Germany reluctantly assume a prominent role among the states of the European Union, but outright leadership remains deeply problematic for a country haunted by its past. What part will Germany a land where over a long history of people have adopted layered identities play in this new Europe? Whatever the answer, the implications for Britain and the future of the wider European project will be profound. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan was the man who created the National Health Service, the crowning achievement of the post-war Labour government. The son of a miner from Monmouthshire, Wales, he became a local miners' trade union leader at nineteen and was elected a Labour MP in 1929. He was one of few who dared criticise Churchill's leadership during the Second World War and demanded that the government commit to a more equal society. When Labour came to power in 1945, as a minister responsible for health and housing Bevan contributed more than anyone to building a fairer Britain. He resigned from the cabinet in 1951 after two months in office in protest against the proposed introduction of prescription charges for dental and vision care, but continued to be an influential voice on the Labour Party left, inspiring group known as the Bevanites. This biography traces Bevan's life and legacy; a skilled orator and champion for the welfare state whose influence on modern Britain cannot be overstated. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This true account of the scandal that enveloped the discovery in 1898 of an inscribed casket said to contain the ashes of the Buddha, is set against the background of the high noon of the British Raj. In January 1898 a British landowner, William Claxton Peppe, excavated a large Buddhist brick stupa on his estate close to India's border with Nepal. At a depth of 24 feet he uncovered a huge stone coffer. What made this discovery so important was an inscription found on the top of one of the reliquary caskets - declaring it to contain ashes of the Buddha. This news aroused world-wide interest since no other so well authenticated relics of the Buddha had ever been found. But almost immediately it became known that a German archaeologist, Dr Anton Fuhrer, working nearby at the same time had not only made bogus claims and faked his results but had also been associated with the dig. Fuhrer was quickly unmasked by a British magistrate who himself had a stake in the excavation. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Since its inception, the European Union has developed to become an open and transparent system which is democratically accountable to more than five hundred million European citizens. James Elles explains how the EU functions, emphasizing the emerging role of the European Parliament in the process. Elles reviews the history of Britains relationship with the EU and illustrates how a reluctance to consult the British people on multiple Treaty changes led to a lack of understanding about Brussels. Looking to the future, Elles assesses the global long-term trends that lie ahead to 2030 and underlines that closer European cooperation, for example on environmental and digital policies, will help them to be more easily resolved. As the next decade unfurls, the EU with President Macron at the forefront of the debate will progress and the European Parliament will continue to develop as a platform for the voice of the European people. From the disinterest of political leaders to the ambitions of emerging nations, Fiction, Fact and Future is not only a guide to why Britain failed to make the most of its EU membership, but also an optimistic message to a younger generation to help shape their future in the 21st century. James Elles explains how the EU functions, emphasising the emerging role of the European Parliament in the process. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 1939, as war loomed, Peter Gumbels Jewish-born grandparents fled Nazi Germany for England. But within a matter of decades, their grandson, appalled by the Brexit referendum, had become a citizen of the country they fled eighty years ago. How had it come to this? Drawing on one familys migration stories, Citizens of Everywhere explores the nature of belonging amid cycles of pluralism and nationalism. In an increasingly global world, nativist and diasporic impulses pull many people in contradictory directions that can be difficult to even understand. In Citizens of Everywhere, Gumbel grapples with this complexity through his own family history, revealing the personal costs of Britains recent isolationist retreat. Along the way, he laments the decline of British pluralism at the worst possible momentas it rejects the European project and engages in an ill-fated struggle against an ever more interconnected world. Through the lens of his own family's history, Peter Gumbel explores issues of identity, nationality and belonging after Brexit. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. To the vast majority of the English public, the role of the United Kingdoms Supreme Court has often been distant and incomprehensible, its judges a caste apart from society. The Power of Judges ends this mystery, exploring the fundamental concept of justice and explaining the main functions of the courts, the challenges they face, and the complexity of the judicial system. In this lucid account of the judiciary, David Neuberger and Peter Riddell lead us through an array of topics both philosophical and logistical, including the relationships between morality and law and between Parliament and the judiciary. They explain the effects of cuts in legal aid and shed light on complex and controversial subjects like assisted dying and the complexities of combating mass terrorism while protecting personal liberty. Given that many of these issues span national borders, the book also compares the United Kingdoms legal system with its counterparts in the United States and Germany. Full of insights, The Power of Judges is an informative and accessible account of the United Kingdoms judicial system, its contribution to running the country, and the challenges it facesincluding the many threats to its effectiveness. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Good governance is a fundamental value in the United Kingdom, and its citizens are entitled to expect that public officials, both elected and non-elected, behave according to the highest standards of ethical behavior. Of course, these aspirations alone are not enough to root out corruption in government. In order for integrity in public life to be maintained, the core principles underlying these expectations must be constantly examined and strengthened. This new volume, published in collaboration with the Westminster Abbey Institute, explores ways in which public service institutions can maintain integrity on both the institutional and the individual level. While keeping the power of the individual in mind, the authors also illustrate the critical role institutions play in upholding values when the moral compass of individuals in power fails. Integrity in Public Life provides an essential guide to integrity, seeking to answer the fundamentals of what integrity means in public life and why it holds such a critical role in the constitution of Britain. Integrity in Public Life provides a critique of and an essential guide to integrity, leaving the reader with some hope for its continued place in public life.
