Paperback. Condizione: Good. SAILOR MAN is an examination of the combat service of James Preston Nunnally, an underage enlistee aboard the US Fuller in the Pacific Theater during WI. Popularly known as the Queen of Attack Transports, the Fuller received a wartime high nine battle stars for participation in that number of invasions. Nunnally was a crew member for seven of those actions (Bougainville, Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, the Philipinnes-twice, and Okinawa). It is primarily based on letters Nunnally wrote to his son four decades after the events occurred in an attempt to explain why he had abandoned his son and digressed into a life of alcoholism. In addition to Nunnally's letters, other documents are used, such as a semi-official accounts of the Fuller's actions written in 1945, and interviews with Nunnally's son and sister.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. From his days as a Naval aviation cadet learning his trade aboard the Yellow Peril biplane trainers in 1942, to his first bombing runs on Guadalcanal, to life aboard an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific, Norman Berg offers a fast-paced narrative filled with humor and meticulous attention to detail. Paperback. Condizione: Good. In June of 2002, the author and his friend set out to descend by canoe a rarely traveled and extremely remote wilderness river in northern Saskatchewan--the MacFarlane River--and eventually arrive at pristine Lake Athabasca. It is a river journey few have attempted (the first recorded descent was in 1991), passing through an uninhabited and inhospitable region of the vast Canadian north. It is an area rarely entered and even more rarely written about. From encounters with nasty grizzlies to some of the most challenging conditions imaginable, David Curran manages to survive his first foray into true wilderness and writes about his adventure in a style reminiscent of Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods--with self-deprecating humor and a novice's appreciation for all things wild. In addition, the book explores the natural and human history of the region, as well as describes the choosing, planning and carrying out of a wilderness canoe trip in a style that is informative and engaging.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. During the early years of the Vietnam War, several small cadres of men served their country and their fellow comrades-in-arms from a remote airbase cut out of the jungles of northeast Thailand. The base was named Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, but the men assigned there had a special name for it: Naked Fanny. Initially they were assigned to rescue military pilots shot down over Laos or forced to leave their aircraft over Thailand. But as the war expanded, their mission changed and they were asked to fly into hostile situations in North Vietnam, making numerous rescues--detailed here by the pilots who flew them and those who were rescued. This is a story that has never been told in its entirety but is an integral part of U.S. Air Force aviation history. Scott Harrington has compiled and written the story of those early years of the Vietnam War at the little base just west of the town of Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. After reading it, you'll understand why these fragile aircraft and the men who flew them were often referred to as Blades of wood - Men of steel.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. STOLEN WATER, FORGOTEN LIBERTIES is a fascinating memoir detailing the life and experiences of Joe Barnes--husband, father, WI veteran, and the owner of the largest canoe and fishing rental service on Arkansas' Buffalo River. More than a personal memoir, however, it also tells the larger story of a community bound together by a river that provided sustenance and livelihood, only to see it all threatened when, in 1972, the National Park Service took control of the river, designating it a national river. Along with the designation came tough new rules and regulations, which many living along the river found ill-conceived and unfair, and a struggle to maintain a way of life that had remained largely unchanged for generations. Awarded an Honorable Mention at the 2015 Los Angeles Book Festival.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. A poignant, often humorous, recollection of the siege of Khe Sanh--a pivotal turning point in the American war in Vietnam. Under constant bombardment from the enemy, Mike Archer and his cadre of fellow nineteen-year-old Marines--Orr, Pig, Old Woman and Savage, just to name a few--managed to survive and, in the process, learn about manhood, sacrifice and the darkest recesses of fear and loneliness. Includes numerous photos, maps and provides a detailed history of the battle for Khe Sanh.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Tough as Nails is one woman's account of her personal experiences and the lessons learned from them; it is how West Point engraved Duty, Honor, and Country onto her soul. Tough as Nails gives you the West Point experience. You'll see it, feel it and learn something from it. You'll smile and you'll laugh. This is the story that Erma Bombeck would have written had she been a member of the Class of 1981, the second class with women at WestPoint. Tough as Nails is more than a coming-of-age memoir. Originally written to assist her in her role as a West Point admissions liaison officer, the author shares knowledge gained in her 15 years working with admissions.…
