On October 25, 1854, acting in defense of their base at Balaklava during the Crimean War, the Light Brigade of the British Cavalry Division made the most magnificent and most brutal charge in military history. Almost seven hundred men armed with sabre and lance charged straight at the muzzles of Russian cannons. In the slaughter that followed, many fell to roundshot and shell fired from the front and from both sides. Those who survived took a terrible revenge on the enemy. In this vivid and extraordinarily detailed account of the charge and the bloody melee that followed, Terry Brighton~a writer with unique access to regimental archives~draws on twenty years of research to tell the story in the words of the survivors themselves for the first time. The author reveals that the charge clown the valley was not what Lord Raglan, commander in chief of the British army in the Crimea, had intended. His written order had been carried by an aide~de~camp to Lord Lucan, who commanded the cavalry division; Lucan gave the order orally to Lord Cardigan, commanding the Light Brigade. Somewhere on the journey from Raglan to Cardigan the meaning of the order was misunderstood. How this happened and who was to blame is a central concern of this book. History has long stripped the charge of any reasonable cause or strategic importance, celebrating it instead as a pure example of military dash and esprit de corps~the heroic life condensed into a seven~minute cavalry charge. Hell Riders shatters many popular myths about the charge, names the officer the men believed was to blame for the magnificent blunder, and sorts out the fierce rivalries that existed among the aristocratic and ill~trained officers. The book's most staggering conclusion is that, far from being a miserable failure, the charge must be considered an astonishing success. "Remarkably, and against all odds, after charging through the fire of guns from the front and on both flanks," the author writes, "the Light Brigade did take the battery. The Russian cavalry massed behind the guns turned and fled." Hell Riders takes the reader closer than ever before to the experience of charging into the valley of death, and reveals the horrific truth about the charge of the Light Brigade exactly as the survivors lived it.
