At the time of the original publication of this volume, no book with the exception of Robert Beverly's History of Virginia had really dealt with the social aspects of 17th century Virginia. And Beverly's history, while full of details, really relates to the last years of the 17th century and the first years of the 18th. Because of the non-existence of travel memoirs, or extended biographies of prominent citizens or any other obvious sources, the author, to acquire an accurate conception of Virginian social life from 1607 to 1700, examined a large mass of miscellaneous materials primari-ly concerned with other subjects including the pamphlets preserved in Force's Historical Tracts, Virginian parish registers, and the several hundred volumes of Virginia's county records that had survived to 1907. There are chapters exploring such topics as size and population, the origins of the higher planting class, social distinctions, ties with the mother country, manner of life, hospitali-ty of the people, drinking, dancing, acting, games, horse-racing, hunting, fishing, funerals, weddings, church, court day, muster, dueling and others. There is also an appendix dealing with the non--English settlers and their influence. The author's premise that the most remarkable feature of 17th century Virginia social life was its resemblance to the social life of England is explored in great detail throughout. Anyone interested in early Virginia customs and habits will find this social history both enjoyable and informative. Originally, Berkeley County incorporated all the territory in what is now the "Eastern Panhandle" (including present Jefferson and Morgan Counties), and extended from the Potomac to the Shenandoah Rivers on the north and east. This volume begins with descriptions of the daily life and customs of the early settlers, including farming, hunting, building a log cabin, cooking, witchcraft, medicine, etc. An important crossroad during the French and Indian War as well as the Civil War, Berkeley County "sent more soldiers to the wars of the country per capita than any other county" of Virginia. A detailed chapter on its military history contains muster rolls from several different wars. Of special interest is a full transcript of the "Faulkner Report," which was commissioned by the governor of Virginia in response to Maryland's claims to part of the northern section of what is now West Virginia. The report was thorough, convincing, and full of historical data. A large biographical section (about 100 pages) is followed by lists of town officers and a history of the schools, churches and "miscellaneous." A new fullname plus subject index has is provided. The author was a descendant of the Scotch-Irish Ingles and Draper families, the first pioneers to make permanent settlements beyond the Alleghenies in 1748. He states that 'In connection with. these histories of the Ingles and Draper settlements and families, I shall endeavor to trace, in chronological order, the progressive frontier explorations and settlements along the entire Virginia border, from the Alleghenies to the Ohio, from the New River-Kanawha and tributaries in the South-west, where settlements first began, to the Monongahela and tributaries, in the north-west, .and the intervening country, and along the Ohio, where the frontier line of settlements was last to be advanced, but I shall give more special attention to the early history of the region of the New River-Kanawha and tributaries, . . . with collateral facts and incidents of more or less local or general historical interest.' This book is designed around the Infantry only, however, a few names in the Artillery and Cavalry have been shown. In this book, the information and lists provide the reader with what happened to the forgotten man -- the casualty. Where the individual went for treatment, what type of treatment he received, how far he may have had to travel and by what means (if any) of transportation was available. During this time period the only means most readily available was by railroad, horse and wagon (Ambulance Corps out of Richmond) or usually the empty supply wagons. With many being carried by other wounded comrades on a litter or just walking to the nearest or assigned field hospital where the Yellow-cross Banner floated to signal the hospital area. The locations of cemeteries, hospitals and field infirmaries, along with the death dates, can help those doing research to "run down" or locate possible burial areas or the unknown burial location of ancestors from this battle. 432 pp. [1568HB].…

The record number is shown in many document subject lines and is the number needed to locate the record on the microfilm reel. The material herein has been reproduced exactly as it was in the original documents.
