The first half of the book consists of a general survey that includes sections on Origins, the Norman Transformation, Life and Buildings, Friars and Hospitals, the Dissolution, Continuance and Survival, the English Revival, Anglican Communities, and the Modern Scene. Bryan Little's treatment is particularly valuable because it makes generally available the findings of such scholars as Sir William Dugdale, Cardinal Gasquet, Geoffrey Baskerville, Professor David Knowles, and other modern authorities. Mr. Little is himself a distinguished local and architectural historian, the author of several previous books. It is worth noting that he has visited all but a very small number of the monastic sites with which this book deals.…
