Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Apparent First Edition (NAP). Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page ( 'For Shirley and Barry (?), With the best regards from Sam, N.Y.C. Feb 14, 1991').' The following page is titled 'Thanks To Scandinavia.' The first paragraph of this page reads: 'Until the founding… of Thanks To Scandinavia in June 1963 America was unaware of the singular acts of humanity and bravery of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in rescuing persons of the Jewish faith from the Holocaust. During the war years, the mass media featured major battles and armed struggle; but there was no way that information about the Scandinavian Rescue could have filtered out of occupied Europe. When the war was over and we learned the full horror of Hitler's "final solution," we still knew very little about those quiet heroes of the Rescue.' This book is in very good condition. The covers are perfectly clean. So are the page edges. The only wear is a thin vertical crease coming down from the front top edge adjacent to the spine. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with nicely tight pages throughout. These pages are exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through without seeing any soiling at all. They are also in excellent condition. I'm not seeing any creasing, no dogeared corners. An early page is titled 'Listing of Maps, Charts, Documents, and Photographs.' There are 25 listings. Finishing up, there are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Inscribed by Author(s).

Trade paperback. Reprint. First published in HB in 1965. Trade paperback Glued binding. [6], 361, [1] p. Map of Warsaw Ghetto. From Wikipedia: "Alexander Donat also Aleksander Donat in Polish (1905 16 June 1983); a chemist by training, and journalist by profession; was a Holocaust survivor imprisoned at the Warsaw Ghetto during…the occupation of Poland by Nazi Germany in World War II. He became an inmate of several Nazi forced labor and concentration camps and an eye witness to the Holocaust in Poland. After the war, Donat emigrated with his family to the United States, settling in New York City, and went on to write about his wartime experiences. He wrote Jewish Resistance (1964), Holocaust Kingdom (1965), and The Death Camp Treblinka: a documentary (1979), a series of memoirs devoted to these traumatic events. Alexander Donat was born in the Polish capital Warsaw, where he lived until World War II. He was a publisher of a daily newspaper there, had married, and became a father in 1937 to a son William. Following the Nazi German invasion of Poland Donat and his family were forced into the Warsaw Ghetto. From there, he was deported to several forced labor and concentration camps including Majdanek. Donat feared that, "should the Nazis be victorious, 'future generations will pay trubute to them'" similar to Homeric Greek crusaders. He was liberated from Dachau by American troops and returned to Warsaw, where he found his wife and their son, whom the Polish rescuers had placed in a Catholic orphanage. The Donats went to the United States and opened a printing business. In 1977 Donat helped start "The Holocaust Library", a non-profit program to launch books that condemn persecution and tell of the personal experiences of the Jews during the Second World War. He died of a lung disease at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Good. Signed by previous owner. Cover has some wear and soiling.
