Volume I of the proceedings of the first conference using this interdisciplinary approach to materials characterization was published as 'Advances in Materials Characterization', edited by D. R. Rossington, R. A. Condrate and R. L. Snyder, and was listed as volume 15 of the Materials Science Research series of Plenum Press (New York, 1983). The purpose of bringing together scientists from a wide range of disciplines to present and discuss the latest developments in their fields is to promote cross fertilization. The first conference of this type and its resulting volume of proceedings stimulated a significant dialogue between disciplines concerning the characterization of materials, therefore indicating a need for a continuing series of such conferences. Because of the increasing attention now being paid to theoretical and experimental as…pects of the phenomena encountered, a symposium focusing particularly on dielectric behavior was held at the l6lst National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Los Angeles, California, March, 1971. The authoritative papers in this volume were all presented at this symposium, which was sponsored by the Polymer Division of the American Chemical Society. At a time when we need to understand the basic mechan isms…underlying various forms of aggression, these papers report progress toward this goal. Although the many social, psychologic and economic causal mechanisms contributing to aggression have been reasonably well-understood for a number of years, the correlated physiological, biochemical, endocrinological and neurochemical changes taking place in an organism that is either the aggressor or the recipient of aggression have not been studied extensively, and the limited available data in the past have often been in con siderable conflict. These eight papers demonstrate that complex interac tions take place among the psychological, social, physio logical, biochemical, endocrinological and neurochemical factors involved in aggression and defeat. The general indications are that while the aggressor learns to survive and adapts readily to the fighting process, the vanquished, if he does not die, maintains an existence highlighted by severe and extensive changes in all physiologic and psycho logic systems. We cannot make sweeping generalizations to the human organism from the results of non-human animal experimentation. By this time peritoneal dialysis had emerged as a treatment for a substantial fraction of patients with end-stage renal di…sease and countless numbers of patients with acute renal failure. This treatment is now practiced worldwide and is the life-sustaining treatment for about 40,000 patients with chronic renal failure, representing 15 to 20% of dialysis therapy in about 1000 centers. It is not surprising, therefore, that the number of health professionals engaged in the investigation and the application of the treatment has also grown exponen tially. The First International Symposium on Peritoneal Dialysis, organized by Dr. A. Treviiio-Be cerra in Chapala, Mexico, in 1978, brought together a group of pioneers when continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis was in its infancy. In 1981, Dr. G. M. Gahl chaired the Second Symposium, in West Berlin, when the technique and professional interest were growing con siderably. By 1984, when Dr. 1. F. Winchester and I organized the Third Symposium, the pre sented papers exceeded 100 and there were about 1000 attendees. At that time, it was deemed appropriate to form a more organized group and the International Society for Peritoneal Dialy sis was founded. Wdssbauer Effect Methodology, Volume 7, records the p…roceedings of the Seventh Symposium on Wdssbauer Effect Methodology. The symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and interest was concentrated on spec troscopy, with some attention to methodology and applica tions. The Symposium was held in the Mercury Ballroom of the New York Hilton on January 31, 1971. Dr. N. Benczer Koller presided over the afternoon and evening sessions. About two hundred participants attended, demonstrating the continued high level of effort in the field and of interest in this series. Austin Science Associates, Elron, and Nuclear Science Instruments demonstrated their Wdssbauer equipment products. These were well received, and evidently are continuing to improve in utility and quality. Applications papers reported on local magnetic moment measurement and radiation damage studies. A large number of spectroscopy papers was presented and subject matter included work on Mossbauer parameters in iron, tin, and europium and on conversion electron spectroscopy. Method ology work reported included a source for Snl19-Sb12l, a 'blackness' distortion removal technique, and use of radio frequency fields. What I can say with some certainty, is that the book would not have emerged without the pleasing interplay of two contingent pleasures which occurred in the summer… of 1978. The first was the penetrating sense of awe experienced when I finished reading Koestler's recent book' Janus A Summing Up', 1978. His philosophy provided that necessary inspiration to tackle, in a rational way, a long held dissatisfaction with the . conven tional Darwinian explanation of evolution. The second was the more subliminal pleasure of camping and exploring that beautiful panorama of the lake district of Northern Ontario. The book, written in an argumentative style, reviews the case for the inheritance of acquired characteristics and proposes a simple, feasible mechanism to drive this process. It is written from the narrow perspective of an experimental Immunologist with an interest in the evolution of multicellular organisms. Much attention is given to current ideas in Immunology, and at times we dive deeply into its heartland to grasp those threads relevant to a general theory of evolution. In these excursions, I take pains not to lose the general reader (although I run the risk of annoying some Immunologists), I do this so that the argument is understood by Biologists as a whole. The specific issue was the safety of a small mediu…m-pressure mercury arc designed to emit UV-A (NUVA-Lite, L. D. Caulk Co. , Milford, Delaware) for photopolymerization of resinous fillings used in dentistry. How- ever, the context grew to become a consideration of the risks and benefits to hu mans of electromagnetic radiation between the biologically active short UV and the visible spectrum. We have accumulated data from our own experimental work and from the literature and have attempted to put this information in the perspective of known biologic effects of ultraviolet radiation as it influences hu mans. Interest in the biological effects of longwave ultraviolet radiation is increas ing in all of the many scientific disciplines that make up the complex field of photobiology. In order to minimize the chance for error and personal prejudice and to maximize the use of expertise, each chapter has been reviewed by several authorities. The CCMS was charged with developing meaningful enviro…nmen tal and social programs that complement other international pro grams, and with showing leadership, first, in solution of exist ing problems and, second, in development of long-range goals for environmental protection in the NATO sphere of influence and in other countries as well. A first Pilot Study on Air Pollution was initiated by the CCMS at its inaugural meeting in December 1969. It resulted in documents about the definition of criteria for the effects of air pollutants as well as the development of assess ment methods for air quality in urban areas. A second Air Pollution Pilot Study (1975-1979) worked out the basics for setting up assessment methods for emissions inven tories, techniques for the practical application of meteorologi cal diffusion models as well as the development of guidelines for an Air Quality Management System (AQMS). Within this second Air Pollution Pilot Study attention to modelling concentrated on the Gaussian Plume Model. This has, in some measure, been due to the development and application of a number of techniques such as the 2-deoxyglucose method and micr…ochemical methods for measuring metabolites and regional cerebral blood flow. Data from the application of these techniques are just beginning to be collected, and the next few years promise to bring many new and exciting findings. The study of energy metabolism in brain is particularly interesting due to the fact that although the brain has scant energy reserves (as compared with the liver), it has one of the highest metabolic rates in the body. Recent studies from several laboratories have shown a surprising divergence of re sponses to metabolic insult in different areas of brain. In this regard, the cer ebellum, for example, may have metabolic features which are uniqve from those of any other region. The high-energy phosphate compounds ATP and phos phocreatine, supplied by the oxidative metabolism of glucose, are necessary for normal cerebral functions such as the maintenance of membrane potentials, transmission of impulses, and synthetic processes. Interruption of substrate or 'poisoning' of the system by a variety of means lead to a rapid change in cellular energetics, and ultimately cell death. From the clinical standpoint, an interesting feature of metabolic encephalopathy is that in many cases, early diagnosis and treatment may result in a rapid reversal of symptoms. 484 pp. Englisch.

All of the contrib uting authors have eagerly submitted their original works as an expression of their esteem and affection for this dedicated man, friend, husband, father, scientist and teacher. This book could have been made extremely voluminous and the Symposium could have gone on for days. However, the achievements of a man such as Jack Sauer do not have to be measured by the number of pages in a book nor the number of speakers at a meeting. A more meaningful measure is the sincerity and devotion with which these few pages were assembled. All of the contributions to these Proceedings are from invited speakers. Numbered among the contrib utors are some of Jack's ~ personal friends as well as numerous former students who are currently working in the field of polymer science and engineering. It will be apparent to all who know him that those included represent but a small portion of Jack's friends and students. This volume contains the lectures from the Pacifi…c Summer Institute held at Pearson College on Vancouver Island, B. C. (Canada) from August 23 to September 3, 1982. The Institute was titled 'Progress in Nuclear Dynamics: Short-Distance Behavior in the Nucleus'. The primary source of funds for the Institute came from NATO through its Advanced Study Institute programme. The topic of the school was the role of the substructure of hadrons--quarks and gluons--in nuclear physics.
