The present book has been designed to serve the students of plant breeding genetics biotechnology biochemistry and forestry. In most of the books the objective type question judge the students on the basis of their ability to memorize because of the way they are formulated. It is important to be able to remember the year of historical events the scientists involved and who named what to make one remember the landmark contributions of the people on a particular subject. Along with these kinds of questions majority of the questions in this book have been designed to assess the candidate's understanding of the subject. It is perhaps for the first time where questions have four to six choice statements which are to be understood to find the right answer. One has to think and remember what he has learnt to be able to answer these questions. There are some books on objective type questions on the subject of plant breeding and a very few on genetics but there is hardly any book which deals with tissue culture biotechnology biochemistry or forestry. All these subjects are related as many postgraduate students of genetics and plant breeding take biotechnology as a minor subject whereas those of biotechnology take biochemistry or genetics and plant breeding as a minor subject. Also undergraduates in agricultural universities study courses on all these subjects including forestry. 474 pp.

The human body contains 20 times more microbes than it does cells and in each cell there are about 10 microbes. Approximately 99% of the viruses and bacteria inhabiting our body are yet to be identified. Some of our colonists viruses in the cells of our brain influence even our thoughts and feelings. This book illustrates how microbes and human life go hand in hand. Microbes for Human Life elaborates the relevance of microbes and their role in everyday human life microbes in food production and agriculture in biotechnology and industry and in ecology and environment. It also discusses some of the negative impacts of microbes on our world such as their role in causing diseases and bio terrorism. But the primary focus is on how microbes in their incredible variety are essential to human life. The book presents the many ways in which we intentionally and at times unintentionally utilize microbes to improve our lives and enhance our life experience. 678 pp.

Increasing number of complete genome sequences in the past decade has enhanced our understanding of chromosomal basis of genetic inheritance to molecular level. Chromosomes to Genome presents the historical perspective as well as the current state of this journey from chromosomes to genome. The book presents complex topics in a simplified manner that is accessible to any student of biology. Each chapter provides a historical account of the field and reviews the recent work in this area puts the subject in appropriate perspective and makes reading enjoyable. The book provides genomic account of evolutionary history of emergence of complexity from simple living systems. It also gives glimpses of intricate regulatory mechanisms that act on genomic information during differentiation of different cell types. Each chapter is written by well known practicing scientists leading very active and competitive groups engaged in unravelling the secrets hidden in the complex trail of DNA double helix in the immensely dense forest of eukaryotic nucleus. Availability of large number of genomes and emergence of new technologies has boosted the speed and scale of research in chromosome biology and genomics to an unprecedented level. Each chapter reflects this dynamic and exciting aspect. From how genome is packaged within the nucleus to bring out complexity of eukaryotic gene regulation to how when anything goes wrong with this process disease conditions set in this book covers landmark aspects of modern biology of genetic inheritance. While it serves as valuable reference for experts as well as students in the field of molecular biology cytogenetics and genomics the book is also accessible to those with more general interest in biology. 214 pp.

The number of potential microbes exploited commercially is scanty irrespective of their huge presence in diverse habitats. Although in recent years some of them have been successfully manipulated in multifarious areas such as production of industrially viable products organic chemicals pharmaceuticals recovery of metals improvement and maintenance of environmental quality and insect and pest control. The twenty three articles included here fall under three broad categories namely agricultural microbiology industrial microbiology and bioremediation. The psychrophiles hold many biological secrets such as biochemical limits to macromolecular stability and the blueprints for constructing the stable macromolecules. Lactic acid bacteria are known for their role in the preparation of fermented dairy products. Potential strains for production of lactic acid with emphasis on its fermentation economics and systematics have been dealt with in greater detail. Biotechnological applications of pectinases in general and alkaline pectinases in particular play an important role in industry. Production characteristics and applications of microbial alkaline pectinolytic enzymes have been elaborated. Now a days semi synthetic ergot alkaloids are wi.
