Paperback. Condizione: Good. This book is the story of one death among many in the war in eastern Ukraine. Its author is a historian of war whose brother was killed at the frontline in 2017 while serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Olesya Khromeychuk takes the point of view of a civilian and a woman, perspectives that tend to be neglected in war narratives, and focuses on the stories that play out far away from the warzone. Through a combination of personal memoir and essay, Khromeychuk attempts to help her readers understand the private experience of this still ongoing but almost forgotten war in the heart of Europe and the private experience of war as such. This book will resonate with anyone battling with grief and the shock of the sudden loss of a loved one.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Even though traditional microfinance has successfully paved the way for offering financial services to low-income populations without traditional collateral, many microfinance institutions (MFIs) are still reluctant to move into rural areas and agricultural finance, due to the perceived high risks and costs. Daniela Rottger's research demonstrates how MFIs can mitigate risks and costs of lending to smallholder farmers by using a combination of proven traditional microfinance mechanisms while adapting specific loan features and lending mechanisms to the particularities of smallholder agriculture. She systematically compares traditional microfinance risk management mechanisms with agricultural microfinance approaches and identifies successful strategies. For this purpose, eight MFIs providing agricultural finance to smallholder farmers in four countries in East and West Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Benin, Cameroon) were interviewed and their loan features and agricultural lending mechanism were analyzed. The study shows that MFIs can successfully serve smallholder farmers in rural areas. However, the extent of adaptations is reason enough not to commit to such an endeavor lightly. A strong commitment combined with sound in-house knowledge of agricultural value chains and the flexibility to adapt loan terms and lending procedures to the particularities of agriculture are needed to successfully develop and sustain agricultural microfinance.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Kristina Bekenova presents a collection of interviews with fifteen emerging African leaders, musicians, poets, artists, doctors, environmentalists, defenders of animal rights, and tour operators, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Nigeria, Malawi, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Africa, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe. These interviews are an important, effective, and efficient way to make Africas authentic voices heard. The interviewees explain what Africa needs most, what they are doing about it, what vision for Africa they have, and how they think their ideas can be implemented. They share genuine African bottom-up perspectives, voice their understanding of African natural and cultural issues, identify Africas true needs, and formulate recommendations from an original African perspective. This book presents a unique opportunity to hear their opinion, to learn from Africa, and to understand what the continent needs as it makes progress along its developmental path. …

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A foreign affairs journalist for 60 years, Jonathan Power has traveled all over the world, writing, besides his column in the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times, long articles for Encounter and Prospect magazines, eight books on foreign affairs and many TV and radio documentaries, mainly for the BBC, one of which won the silver medal at the Venice Film Festival. He has interviewed over 70 of the world's most famous and influential presidents, prime ministers, and political and literary icons including Ignacio Lula da Silva, Indira Gandhi, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Georgi Arbatov, Sonia Gandhi, Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt, Olusegun Obasanjo, Julius Nyerere, James Baldwin, Andy Young, Jesse Jackson, Manmohan Singh and Paul McCartney. Notably, Power was the first journalist to report at length in English on the trafficking of African migrants across the Sahara and into France. This inspired his first novel, "The Human Flow"- a love story set against the backdrop of the migrant flow from West Africa to Paris and London. In addition to his writing, Power has consulted for organizations such as the Aspen Institute, the International Red Cross, the World Council of Churches, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, UNICEF, and the Catholic Churchs Commission for Justice and Peace in England and Wales. Jonathan Power tells the story of his life and what it was like to be a foreign affairs journalist for sixty years. Paperback. Condizione: New. Most studies of consciousness proceed from a standpoint where external reality already pre-exists. As such, these studies would be inherently unable to recognise it if consciousness in fact arose at the same level where reality itself takes its source -- at the level where wave functions collapse and thereby generate the fabric of material reality. At the same time, a number of compelling contemporary interpretations of physics strongly hint that consciousness must most likely be a fundamental constituent of reality, that it cannot be emergent, and that the role of the brain is limited to the harnessing, optimisation, and deployment of consciousness within material reality -- aka the realm of collapsed wave functions. This view seems to be also supported by a range of credible observations made by a number of credible professionals who operate at the margins of studies of consciousness, such as psychiatrists, who occasionally observe puzzling cases involving unusual phenomena related to consciousness. If we back-engineer the inevitable macroscopic consequences of a consciousness born at the same level as the building blocks of physical reality itself, we discover that such marginal phenomena become then fully explainable. The book offers readers new insights into interpretations of current research in physics and enables readers without a background in physics to understand the implications and their relevance to our understanding of consciousness.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. To this day, almost all narratives on Bosnia focus on the 1990s, the war, and the labyrinth that Daytons institutional system represents. They also tend to be imbued with a perspective that often overdoes the ethnic and religious element. The truth is that, beyond the causes of war and its manifold tragedies, we actually know very little of its forgotten consequences, once the CNN effect is long gone. As importantly, we know very little of Bosnia today: a society shaped by the past, yes, but also exposed to shifting 21st century dynamics. A society haunted not only by war tragedies but also by a long-standing and long overlooked social crisis. This revealing book thus tries to provide a somewhat different picture of Bosnia, twenty years after the war. Largely based on the authors experience in the field, it is to some extent an account of rural Bosnia, in particular of the Drina River Valley, which bore the brunt of the ethnic cleansing in the 1990s. Yet, and starting off from that isolated region of open wounds, unfinished issues and a cast of characters that range from displaced persons and victims to committed women, the book aims to overall provide a portrait of modern Bosnia as such, while also looking critically at the workings of the international community and European diplomacy. The book, with its landscape of activists, Western diplomats, and an underground world in Sarajevo for LGBT and youths, shows a country of so far failed Springs and leaders who go on with their bad governance. Meanwhile the Europe towards which Bosnia theoretically moves, drifting between a poor understanding of the country, a fear of conflict that acts as its Achilles heel, as well as lack of genuine interest, seems unable to really change things. In a way, therefore, a country in limbo.…

Claus Schrowange has explored these questions and the opportunities of using forum theatre in peace work in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and DR Congo. His conclusion is that forum theatre is more than mere entertainment. It is an aesthetic tool for social change. But the value of theatre is not generated automatically, the way it is done matters. If it is done in a participatory manner with an authentic, believable acting style, involving both the audience and stage actor in a vivid and touching experience, the impact is immediately felt. This book presents the approach Schrowange developed together with a team of African theatre practitioners in a variety of circumstances and environments. It is illustrated with case studies taken from the authors direct experience of using the approach he describes in Eastern DR Congo and Rwanda. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In Noche Triste ("Sad Night"), Robert Radin explores his struggles with anorexia in the 1980s. He also examines the history of self-starvation - its roots in rituals of religious purification, its development into an entertainment craze, its use as a tool of resistance - and, in the process, forces us to reconsider what it means to have anorexia. As his starving becomes an increasingly political act and he ventures to Mexico, alone, alienated from loved ones, we realize he's in the grip of something dangerous that neither he, nor we, fully understand. Written in exquisite prose, Noche Triste is a devastating, revelatory chronicle of a complex illness. In Noche Triste ("Sad Night"), Robert Radin explores his struggles with anorexia in the 1980s. In this unflinching memoir, Robert Radin describes a painful struggle with anorexia that begins with the diagnosis of a friend's sister. Interweaving his personal recollections with historical accounts of fasts, holy visions, hunger strikes, and force-feeding, he turns a lens on the role that hunger has played both in public and in private, not only in the realms of medicine and psychology but in art, culture, and religion. Ultimately, though, this is a strikingly intense and personal story framed within the larger context of an illness that continues to defy generalizations. -Leah Browning, author of Orchard City and In the Chair MuseumRobert Radin's Noche Triste goes straight to the heart of anorexia and refuses to look away. It's a heartfelt, fast-paced, often startling study of the disorder's paradoxes, and Radin's own passage through them. By disappearing you appear, he writes, and by appearing you disappear. I found it riveting.-Rosecrans Baldwin, author of Everything Now?Robert Radin's poignant, beautiful memoir tells the story of his quiet descent into anorexia with grace and sensitivity. Noche Triste is every bit as informative as Hilde Bruch's classic The Golden Cage. When Radin reveals the traumatic antecedents of his eating disorder, his voice is clear and brave.-Robert Brandt, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and co-founder of The FACE Program. …

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Goedel Forever takes a critical look at several foundation claims on Goedelian incompleteness that have appeared in the literature over the years, strictly adhering to mathematical details.Rephrasing the words from Torkel Franzen: Ken Williams presents a new book on Goedel's incompleteness theorem for a general audience since no existing book both explains the theorem from a mathematical point of view and reflects his experiences over the years of reading and commenting on references to the incompleteness theorem on the Internet. The range of critical review on the one hand and its elementary, if detailed, derivation of Goedel's Result (on which it is based) on the other makes Goedel Forever a must read for the serious study of the meaning and consequences of Goedel's Incompleteness. Paperback. Condizione: New. In his groundbreaking book, Predictions: Society's Telltale Signature Reveals the Past and Forecasts the Future, Theodore Modis showed readers a fascinating new way to understand our society and ourselves by applying fundamental scientific concepts to predicting social phenomena. Now he pushes his physics-applied-to-life approach further and unearths street value in scientific findings. He shows that some fundamental truths cast into scientific laws are ubiquitous and enter our lives in subtle ways that we may not be aware of. In a kind of twenty-first century version of Plato's dialogues he offers new insights on life's many possibilities and ambiguities everywhere from managing business and personal relationships to finding purpose in one's existence. This book will titillate the mind of all science-friendly readers.…
