The removal of dogs from the Antarctic followed an amendment to the Antarctic Treaty in 1991. Environmentalists concerned that the distemper-like virus which had affected the seal population in the North Sea may be linked to dogs, pressed for this change. The whole story: from collecting the dogs and shipping them down from Greenland and Labrador; through developing aspects of training, feeding, breeding and travel; to the advent of motorised vehicles, the phasing out of dogs and the final journey that took them to new homes in Canada.
