(Family-Sapindaceae) has been widely used in many cultures for the treatment of cough, flatulence, stomach ulcers, diabetes, obesity, testicular swelling, hernia-like conditions, and epigastric and neuralgic pains. The ethnopharmacological history of Litchi chinensis indicated that it possesses hypoglycemic, anticancer, antibacterial, antihyperlipidemic, anti-platelet, anti-tussive, analgesic, antipyretic, hemostatic, diuretic and antiviral activities. In the production side, the major problem is low and irregular yields due to poor flowering and fruit set. Fruit cracking, sunburn of fruits, slow tree establishment and lack of suitable varieties with early and late maturity and good quality fruits are some of the factors hindering growth of litchi in commercial scale. The litchi tree is characterized by the dense canopy. It is natural for litchi tree to attain a generally rounded dense and compact symmetrical canopy which almost touches the ground and obscures the sight of stem. Quite often litchi trees have more than one stem. The excessive vegetative growth competes for nutrition, light and air which adversely affects a number of physiological and biochemical processes resulting thereby in reduced yields and poor quality of fruits.

This work is primarily based on the primary sources like contemporary documents, travelogues accounts, census, gazetteers, etc. As all these sources were fragmentary in nature, therefore, fieldwork was also undertaken to comprehend the needful information. It involved walking through the streets, taking interviews of the people and preparing notes on urban landuses, who were the migrants and from where did they use to come, etc. The merit of this method lies in its objectivity, as physical objects in the city's landscape would not tell lies. Thus, by putting together information gathered from all these diverse sources an attempt has been made to reconstruct the urban scape under the British rule and underline the process of urbanization in the region. It underlines the process of urbanization in the Shimla hills from the early nineteenth century after the end of the AngloGurkha's war in 1815 till the end of the colonial era. It traces the origin, growth, morphology, socio-economic transformation and development of newly established urban centres in the Shimla hills namely the Sabathu, Kasauli, Jutogh, Dagshai, Kalka and Solon on the modern lines.

The book tries to explore the basis of traditional power institution called hombre in Jaunsar Bazar tribal area in Uttaranchal, which are abhor councils(panchayats) summoned in cases involving sex, property and status. These panchayats act primarily in cases involving traditional rules of behaviour. They usually assemble for setting cases of abduction of women or offences against lower castes. The struggle of the lower castes against the exploitative, arbitrary system of dominance has been a long drawn process of the struggle that evolved in the long history of the tribal societies. this mainly provided the dynamics for the nature of change in these societies at different levels. It therefore becomes interesting subject for social anthropologists to see the unfolding of the nature of change at different levels and times in the history of tribal societies.
