Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First edition. Signed on the title page by Hamerstrom and by the illustrator Jack Oar. Uncommon signed (her first book,An Eagle to the Sky, is common signed, but her other books seem the opposite). Birding with a PurposeisHamerstrom's third memoir, following up on her exploration of her prairie chicken field work in Strictly for the Chickens with this book that's more generally about her passion for birds and her work especially with raptors. Her humor abides again. Hamerstrombroke away from an elite--and as she saw it, effete--background in Boston to becomean important woman in ecology and conservation, the only woman to earn a graduate degree from Aldo Leopold (who encouraged her toward those chickens). Ultimately she was theauthor of a dozen books and more than 150 scientific papers. She twice won the Wildlife Society Award. With her late husband Frederick, she also won the 1971 National Wildlife Federation Award for Distinguished Service to Conservation, and she is a member of the WisconsinWriters Hall of Fame. SeeherNew York Timesobitfor more. Illustrated with photos and drawings throughout. A near fine book on account of one bump to lower front board edge, otherwise fine in a fine jacket, unread.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. First edition. Inscribed on the title page: "For Michael Kelly -- All good wishes for your efforts to advance the conservation of our natural resources -- Carolyn Errington." Uncommon signed. A posthumous collection of essays--mainly previously published in various magazines, but a few never before published-- edited by his wife, Carloyn Errington, who significantly aided her husband in his field research and writing while he was alive and also taught English as a professor at Iowa State (see her obit). Paul Errington was an important conservationist and professor at Iowa State College known for his devotion to the preservation of marshes and wildlife management. He studied with Aldo Leopold at the University of Wisconsin, where they collaborated on a bobwhite study, and he was in fact a significant influence on Leopold and his idea of the "land ethic." Specifically, Errington is credited with rewriting our understanding of the ecological role of predation, showing that predators were essential to healthy populations of game animals. (See this article for more on Errington and Leopold.) He was named by Life magazine in 1961 as one of the top ten naturalists of his day (along with Rachel Carson, Joseph Wood Krutch, and Roger Tory Peterson), and he received the Wildlife Society's Aldo Leopold Award in 1962 in the last year of his life (he died at only 60).See this extended In Memoriam piece from The Auk.Richard Pough says of his best-known book Of Men and Marshes: "I don't know when I have ever read anything that so beautifully analyzed and expressed the richness and variety that is such an integral part of the wildlife of wetlands. . . . One obtains a picture of marsh wildlife from a man who has undoubtedly studied it more deeply and with greater understanding than any man who has ever lived." This book, A Question of Values, finishes with an appreciation of Aldo Leopold, and also includes a full bibliography of Errington's publications. A very good book with bumping to corners, otherwise fine, in a like jacket.
