"Cornelius Loos was one of the young military officers who followed Karl XII to the Ottoman Empire in 1709. From the royal headquarters in what is at present the republic of Moldova, Loos was sent to Istanbul on the King's orders in 1710. From there his journey was pursued by boat over the Mediterranean to Egypt and he returned by land through Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Konya and Izmir. Loos' mis, 1711

En monografi om de teckningar och akvareller som karolinen Cornelius Loos utförde på en "äventyrlig utfärd från Karl XII:s läger i Bender 1710-11", och som…tillhör Nationalmuseum. Katalogen är indelad i avsnitt om kartor, panoramor, monumentavteckningar, Agia Sofia, lustslott, befästningar, monument i Främre Orienten, och varia. Cornelius Loos var en svensk ingenjörsofficer under Karl XII som 1710 sändes från Bender på en resa till Orienten. Första anhalt var Istanbul varpå han fortsatte vidare till Egypten med flera länder. Uppdraget under resan var bland annat att avteckna byggnadsverk att senare förströ kungen med. Omkring trehundra teckningar utfördes, av vilka endast ett fyrtiotal räddades undan brand vid kalabaliken i Bender 1713. Huvuddelen av de teckningar som klarat sig består av illustrationer av Istanbul. Dessa teckningar anses vara det bästa nedtecknade vittnesmålet om hur Istanbul såg ut i början av 1700-talet.
