Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Second Edition. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. 5 1/4" x 7 3/4." Twenty-three pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning and small occasional spots of discoloration. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. This is…the Second Edition of a series of printed letters, most of which were originally written by William Pottinger, a British lieutenant colonel who made efforts to stop childhood violence against younger children, especially girls, in Britain. Pottinger is very straightforward in his denouncement against juvenile violence committed against younger children. He observes that in most cases, the offenders were juvenile boys and the victims were younger girls. He also observes that the acts of violence were often committed after school hours when students were walking home. Pottinger is committed in his effort to prevent future acts of violence such as was he has witnessed or heard of with the thought in mind of their relation to domestic violence against women. Pottinger does not mince words for these bullies and juvenile delinquents and calls them "cowardly" and "unmanly" and denounces their crimes as "evil." Ultimately, Pottinger hopes that an educational movement can be implemented in Britain to prevent these horrific cases of violence against children. Much of the content of Pottinger's letters are stories of violence committed by children against younger children, some of which were published in local newspapers. Relayed herein are twelve disturbing cases where juvenile delinquents committed violence, harassment, assault, and even homicide against young children (except for one case involves a young male victim, all of the victims were girls). It appears in most, if not all, of these cases, the offenders were either let go or received disproportionately light punishment. The following are summaries of some of these cases that Pottinger describes (each story is about a paragraph in length in the pamphlet). In Harrowgate, four boys threw a young girl off a terrace and no adult intervened. A crowd of young boys and girls forced a four-year-old girl into the mud just because she was wearing a nice dress. Two boys about 12 and 13 years old brutally beat two girls who were about half of their age, and when Pottinger intervened and asked why they attacked them, one of them replied, "It was only a gal (girl)." A 16-year-old boy attacked a mother when she defended her eight-year-old daughter against him (he made to beat the girl after she dismissed one of his insulting jokes). A group of three boys stripped a four-year-old boy of his clothes and put him in a damp ditch; Pottinger says this boy would have perished were it not for a farm servant who heard his cries and rescued him; the offenders were only verbally admonished. An eleven-year-old boy killed a five-year-old girl after striking her on the head with a stick; he was only sentenced to one week in prison. Pottinger appears to describe these delinquents as opportunists who attack their victims only because they perceive them as "weaker" and "younger." In the back, Pottinger suggests using a corner stool and public shame in the classroom as punishment to inhibit violent tendencies in children but fears that some parents will only pull their children out of these schools that use this form of discipline. He hopes that non-violent measures can be used at first to punish delinquents before resorting to more severe and violent punishment. Pottinger also criticizes how many in the general public and law enforcement appear to be apathetic to the crime of juvenile violence committed against other children which appears to be part of the reason why he advocates for social and moral education.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Poor. No Jacket. This is an original, not a reproduction! Normally, we don't list books in poor condition, but this one is special. The hard, green cloth covers are both here and in very nice condition, with bright gilt trim. The spine is also bright and very artistically decorated with lettering and bird…and flowers. The bottom of the spine is worn. The gilt on the page edges is also still very bright and the pages are clean, too! The only writing in the book is on the inside of the front cover and the title page, where there are inscriptions to former owner(s), one dated August 20, 1872. However, the covers are separated from the spine, and a few of the interior pages are loose. The pages are also yellowed, which you would expect with a book of this age. The b/w line drawing illustrations are precious and beautiful. Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit environmental restoration and education. Coleman, Harvey (illustratore).
