Copia autografata
First, Limited Edition. One of 500 copies. This copy lengthily inscribed on front endpaper to Carol McGovern Cerf, daughter of the dedicatee (posthumous) Dr. William Montgomery McGovern (1897-1967). Quarto; blue cloth hardcover with silver foil stamping to spine and front cover; 476pp; illus. Also laid in is a substantial typed letter, signed, from the author to Ms. Cerf, dated 27 September 1977. A tight, square, internally clean copy, Near Fine but for some inobrusive flecking to front board. A major reference work on the Battle of Little Big Horn, chronicling day by day events preceding, during, and following the attack. A distinguished copy, nicely inscribed and with a lengthy letter to the daughter of anthropologist-adventurer Willliam Montgomery McGovern, often mentioned as the inspiration for the Stephen Spielberg character Indiana Jones; the book is dedicated to McGovern, making this a dedication copy of sorts (though we presume McGovern's other surviving descendants likely received similar copies). In his inscription, Willert thanks Ms. Cerf for her assistance in preparing the manuscript, and his letter discusses the book's publication schedule and promises her and her brother (William McGovern Jr.) copies when available. CUSTER HIGH SPOT 26 (Swinford, Custeriana, 1999). Signed.
