Dust jacket. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 2nd Edition. Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). In English. 188 p. Color and b/w ills. Book of buildings: Tezkiretü'l-bünyan and Tezkiretü'l-ebniye. Memoirs of Sinan the Architect. Book of Buildings is the complete critical edition of two important texts, Tezkeritü-'l-Bünyan and Tezkeritü-'l-Ebniye, based on Sinan's own accounts of his life and works. The text is accompanied by scores of full color photographs of Sinan's monuments, miniatures illustrating his works, and facsimiles of the original scripts. For the Ottoman Empire it is works of architecture across the extensive lands which it ruled for over six centuries that mark its cultural identity most indelibly. Today from Bosnia to Yemen, from Iraq to Algeria, and throughout nearly every part of the eastern Mediterranean we find mosques, hans, hamams, bridges, and other buildings representing the achievements of Ottoman civilization and keeping its memory alive. Astonishingly, the majority of these landscapes are the work of A single creative genius, the great master architect of the Ottoman golden age: Sinan. In a lifetime of nearly a century one man created the most outstanding masterpieces of Ottoman architecture, and no other eminent architect left even a fraction of his legacy in terms of sheer numbers. Cover Illustration: The only portrait of Mimar Sinan. Detail from a miniature in Tarih-I Sultan Süleyman, f.115b; Chester Beatty Library, MS413. 1579-1580. "I hope that those of pure heart who look upon my works from now until the end of time and doomsday will regard me kindly, and when they see the earnestness of my endeavour and dedication remember me in their prayers. May God's will be done." Sinan.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Original bdg. HC. In publisher's special slip-case. Folio. (48 x 34 cm). Edition in English. 136 p., color ills. "The Surname-i Hümayun literally translates into Imperial Festival Book, and were albums that commemorated celebrations in the Ottoman Empire in pictorial and textual detail. Such celebrations included mainly imperial weddings and circumcision festivals. These albums were commissioned by the Ottoman Imperial family, usually by the Sultan presiding at the time. The Surname recounts the festivities in order of when the events took place, which includes in detail processions, grand entrance of the Sultan, feasts, entertainers, musicians, dancers, gift giving, firework displays, circumcision and wedding ceremonies. Although many of the Surnames were made to celebrate circumcisions of Ottoman Princes, the first Surname was commissioned in 1524 for a wedding ceremony. This Surname-I Hümayun was commissioned for a circumcision festival, as well it was to commemorate Sultan Murad III's son Prince Mehmed. This festival lasted fifty-two days and was probably one of the most elaborate and grandiose festival the Ottomans had ever held, and it was well documented. The organization of this Surname was done chronologically, each day documented in order with what occurred. The book was created by an author named 'Intizami' which is a pen-name, and the illustrations were done mainly by court artists.".…

In the original slipcase. New Oversize and very heavy volume. Please contact for postage cost. ISBN: 9789752960015 CATALOG: Turkish & Islamic arts KEYWORDS: Ottoman State Ottoman Dynasty Istanbul - Constantinople Ottoman Court Ottoman culture Miniature History of art Ottoman art Painting wedding Entertainment This is a beautiful, slipcased, presentation or gift item. The Slipcase and Book Cover are a facsimile reproduction of the binding which covers the original 1582 book located in Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul. In 1582 Istanbul was the scene of a great celebration that enthralled the city for fifty-two days and fifty-two nights. Sultan Murad III had decreed that a feast be held to celebrate the circumcision of his son, Crown Prince Mehmed, that would be remembered for years to come. At the Sultan?s command, this incomparably splendid event was immortalized in the form of a book, the Surname-I Humayun or An Imperial Celebration, in which the complete story of the festivities was written down and illustrated. The resulting work is an uniquely valuable source of information for Turkish culture and the history of art. For all its descriptions and illustrations vividly bringing the circumcision festivities to life, the Surname is more than just a work of art. This work, which was thought valuable enough in its day to be entered in the inventory of the Imperial Treasury and is now in the Topkapi Saray Museum library, provides us with a panoramic view of life in the Ottoman imperium, and of the economy, society, culture, and art of its capital city, Istanbul, in the late 16th century. Here Professor Emeritus Nurhan Atasoy focuses on thirty scenes from the Surname, chosen to give the reader an idea of the flow of the original work?s descriptions and depictions of events. The full-page illustrations are accompanied with details as an aid to the reader in deciphering the sometimes esoteric language of Ottoman miniatures. This method has the additional advantage of highlighting the most important elements of a scene for those interested in the Surname as a sourcebook on cultural history.…

[xi], 1182 p. in total. 2400 postcards. Born in 1852 in Kalucz, a town on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Max Fruchtermann came to Istanbul in 1867 and two years later opened a picture framing shop in the city. Having decided to have the first Ottoman Postcard Series printed at Breslau in 1895, he ensured through his cards, which number in the millions, that the name "Turkey and the multifarious images associated with it" spread throughout the entire world from Canada to New Zeland. In 1966 when Fruchtermann's daughter-in-law Anna, before closing down the establishment, sold her remaining stock (subsequently realized to number around 600,000) to a secondhand dealer for 2500 liras, she probably never imagined the importance of her father-in-law's postcards. They are not simply photographs of landscape panoramas monumental buildings and people of the time. They are individual documents that reflect in their human types and cross-sections of everyday life the noteworthy political incidents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the ethnic and cultural diversity embodied in the Ottoman identity. As such they have acquired significance far in excess of original expectations. It always comes as a pleasant surprise to collectors to see that ordinary objects left to us from the past, and usually assumed to be of mere functional value, in time acquire special significance. For us, however, far more than a pleasant surprise these postcards are a door opening up on our recent history. The places, incidents and types that Fruchtermann saw and appraised with his own eyes have been given new life and brought together as a whole thanks to this study and up-to-date treatment by Mert Sandalci.…
