It took nature many millions of years to produce and fine tune the bird we know as the wild turkey. Modern man was more efficient in his efforts to eradicate the species common to much of the United States. There were an estimated ten million turkeys in the "new world" when the gang of 102 Englanders established the first permanent colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. Two hundred and thirty one years later the last of the big birds was sighted in Massachusetts near Mount Tom. Within the next fifty years, less than three centuries after settlement, the magnificent wild turkey was gone or going in most of its historic range. Modern man knows little about the turkeys of pre-history. The few facts available have been assembled from scant evidence. A fragment of fossil bone in most instances, and rarely, a complete or nearly complete fossil skeleton. This evidence from a time long past leaves little doubt that a relative of the American wild turkey lived in North America during ancient times. That turkey, zoologists speculate, was somewhat similar in form to the five subspecies of Meleagris gallopavo presently found in North America. Meleagris Gallopavo is the common turkey of North America. That bird, and his uncommon cousin of southern Mexico and adjoining parts of central America (Meleagris ocellata) are the sole survivors of that turkey of ancient times.…
