Nineteenth Century Brown Cloth, 12mo, 20 [Psalms.] + 72 [Seder Ekhot.] pages [92 pages total], 19 x 11.5 cm. Two separate works bound together in one volume. Text in Hebrew and English [Psalms] and Hebrew [Seder Ekhot.]. Hebrew title translates as, "Order of Elegies and Lamentations for Tisha B'Av: with all the laws for the eve and day of Tisha B'Av." Two works bound in one volume: Psalms and Hymns, Selected for the Dedication of the Synagogue of Manchester. By B. Hyam (Parnas), E. Moses, G. Inderaiah (Building Committee), R. Jacobs, and S. Isaacs. Published in Manchester in 1838. And Seder Ekhot ve-kinot le-Tish'ah be-'Av: 'im kol ha-dinim lel ve- yom Tish'ah be-'Av. Published in Krotoschin by B. L. Monasch in 1860. "The history of the Manchester Jewish community dates from about 1780, when Jews commenced to settle near Shudehill and Long Millgate. The first synagogue was founded by two brothers, Lemon and Jacob Nathan, from Liverpool, where a congregation had recently been organized. Alexander Jacobs [Probably the "A. Jacobs" listed on our title page], became an early president of the Manchester Jews, and in 1804 established their first local charity. It was known as the Manchester Jewish Philanthropic Society.The congregation next worshiped in Ainsworth Court, Long Millgate, removing, in 1824, to Halliwell street, where it erected a synagogue for itself. The Halliwell Street Congregation continued to grow, and in 1858 it removed to Cheetham Hill, where a magnificent place of worship was built, which became known as the 'Great Synagogue' and is now the principal synagogue in Manchester. Prof. S. M. Isaacs of Liverpool [Probably the S. Isaacs listed on our title page]-the first regular English preacher in Great Britain-became preacher of the Great Synagogue in that year, dividing his ministrations between the two cities. In 1838 the Manchester Hebrew Association had founded religious classes, and in 1842, as an outcome of these classes, a Jewish school was established through the instrumentality of Abraham Franklin and his brother Jacob Franklin (subsequently editor of the 'Voice of Jacob'), Philip Lucas (who became the first president), and Eleazar Moses" (Joseph Jacobs, Isidore Harris in EJ, 1906). Eleazar Moses is certainly the "E. Moses" listed as a member of the Building Committee on our title page. The later built Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester was the site of an antisemitic car-ramming and knife attack on October 2, 2025, during Yom Kippur, which resulted in three people dead. The Seder for Tisha B'Av includes the reading of the Lamentation Scroll and the recitation of lamentation poems that lament the destruction of the Temple and the troubles that befell the Jewish people, and are recited on the eve and day of Tisha B'Av according to the customs of the particular community. Interestingly, the title page of Seder Ekhot bares an overstamp: Zu haben in Breslau bei M. Monasch Carlsstraße No. 27 Fechtschule. Zur Messe in Frankfurt in der Bude Richt und-Jüdenst.-Ecke. ["Available in Breslau from M. Monasch, Carlstraße No. 27 (Fencing School). At the Frankfurt Fair, at the stall on the corner of Richtstraße and Jüdenstraße."] Both works are scarce: Psalms & Hymns is OCLC: 1125159058, with OCLC locating only 1 copy worldwide, at JTSA.
