By bringing together…the relatively well-studied case of heritage Turkish and the less extensively researched case of heritage Kurdish, the study develops a comparative framework for identifying mechanisms that shape heritage grammars. It evaluates several explanatory factors, including cross-linguistic influence, language-internal dynamics, and register. The analysis also moves beyond a monolingual-bilingual contrast by including bilingual speakers for whom Turkish serves as the societal majority language, thereby shifting the focus from bilingualism per se to the role of a language's societal status as heritage or majority. In sum, the findings demonstrate that register is a central factor shaping variation in word order of heritage Turkish, whereas cross-linguistic influence plays a more prominent role in heritage Kurdish. More broadly, the study underscores the need to expand the empirical scope of heritage language research to include a wider range of languages and sociolinguistic settings, fostering closer dialogue with studies of minoritized languages and multilingual language communities. 204 pp. Englisch.

In historical Indo-European lingui…stics, PCs are most often examined through the lens of the 'Caland System', a complex derivational network of suffixes that structure the expression of such concepts. Yet while the nominal and adjectival exponents of this system have been intensively studied, their verbal counterparts remain comparatively underexplored. This volume takes up that challenge by asking: which classes of adjectives serve as inputs to verbalization, what syntactic and semantic alternations emerge in these derived verbs, and what do these patterns reveal about the status of 'adjectival roots' in Indo-European and beyond The contributions collected here investigate the morphology, syntax, and semantics of deadjectival verbs across the older Indo-European languages. By situating these formations within the broader typology of adjective derivation, property concept encoding, and primary vs. secondary verb formation, the volume forges new connections between typological generalizations, theoretical models, and historical-comparative evidence. Formally, prosodic prominence relations are redundantly expressed by several acoustic parameters, such as changes in fundamenta…l frequency, duration, and intensity. Functionally, prominence relations encode meaning, e.g., the information status of a word or referent. Both the formal and the functional side of prominence facilitate inter-individual variability. On the one hand, redundancy inherent in prominence marking enables individuals to use different parameters in their production and perception. On the other hand, differences in communicative skills may influence which meaning aspects language users pay attention to and how strongly they encode them.In this book, inter-individual variability is analyzed in two production studies and one perception study. Production data is elicited in listener-directed reading tasks and analyzed using prosodic annotation and acoustic analyses. Perception is probed via a prominence rating task. Individual differences are explored via careful descriptive inspection of the data and statistically via cluster analyses. Results indicate that speakers differ in how strongly they encode prominence relations, which parameters they use to do so, and which meaning aspects they predominantly mark - which in turn is partially modulated by their communicative skills. Listeners also vary in their sensitivity to prominence cues.These findings highlight the importance of looking at the individual speaker or listener in prosodic research and allow for a new perspective on established concepts in prosodic theory, such as the dichotomy of tune and metrical structure, relationality and redundancy in prominence encoding and decoding, and the probabilistic nature of form-meaning mapping. 200 pp. Englisch.
