In the spirit of Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet and conceived of as a modern-day vade mecum, Letters to a New Vegan consists of 32 epistles chosen from the hundreds that Tedrowe and Van Kleek received. Paperback. Condizione: Good. Orphaned in her early teens and shuttled between abusive foster homes, Tatiana Forero Puerta found herself in her early twenties in New York City, haunted by the memories of her tumultuous youth and suicidal. Following emergency hospitalization, she was advised by her doctor to take up yoga. Over days, weeks, months, and then years, she embraced yoga's honesty and discipline--delving more deeply into its wisdom, literature, and, vitally, its practice. In so doing, yoga healed her scars, opened her soul to forgiveness, and allowed her to reconcile herself with a past that had threatened to snuff out her life. Yoga for the Wounded Heart is an unsparingly honest memoir of a childhood lost and of courage and resilience gained. It's also an exploration of the fundamentals of yoga: as a technology that focuses our awareness; as a practical application of mindfulness and attention to what is really going on in our lives and bodies; and as a vehicle for the body to guide the mind and heart toward healing.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. What about plants? Don't animals eat other animals? There are no perfect vegans, so why bother? If you're vegan, how many times have you been asked these, and other similarly challenging, questions from non-vegans? Using humor and reason, Sherry F. Colb takes these questions at face value and also delves deeply into the motivations behind them, coming up with answers that are not only intelligent but insightful about human nature. Through examples, case studies, and clear-eyed logic, she providesarguments for everything from why veganism is compatible with the world's major religions to why vegetarianism is not enough. In the end, she shows how it is possible for vegans and non-vegans to engage in a mutually beneficial conversation without descending into counterproductive name-calling, and to work together to create a more hospitable world for human animals and non-human animals alike.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. A gritty and inspiring memoir of a dog rescuer in rural Tennessee and the obstacles and insights she encountered in her attempt to rescue one animal in particular. What would you do to save a dog? Night delivers a litter of eight puppies in a poor neighborhood in Springfield, Tennessee the week before Melissa Armstrong first meets her. As a volunteer for a local nonprofit, Melissa has experience with strays and plans to rescue Night and her litter within days. But nothing goes as planned. For the next six months, Melissa and a ragtag cast of characters try to trap the mutt with nets, catchpoles, spring traps, cheeseburgers, hot dogs stuffed with Benadryl, and the dog's crying puppies. They fail so many times that Melissa is on the brink of giving up. But when she learns about the brutal way the local police department controls the overpopulation problem in Night's neighborhood, she reaffirms her promise to a dog. She vows to rescue her, no matter the consequences. Catching Dawn is a beautifully written story of how Night became Dawn, and of the other dogs who have brought joy and heartbreak, moments of transcendence and despair, and unconditional love to the author's life. Catching Dawn is also a vividly told and thoughtful reflection on the many highs and lows of caring for animals and humans in difficult circumstances; a gritty exposé of the consequences of animal overpopulation in the rural south; and the story of how a homeless dog helps a woman move through personal grief and upheaval to rediscover the meaning of family.  .…

Thomas Keating's latest volume on how we might develop our intimacy with God and our experience of the Christian contemplative tradition. Thomas, in which he examines concepts of the divine-including the astonishments, playfulness, and transformation available to the individual willing to open the door to God. The second section consists of thirty-one brief homilies, which range over topics as diverse as the Trinity and the message of Epiphany, spiritual evolution and cultivating interior silence, and the treasure of spiritual poverty and the beauty of chaos.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Thomas Keating has spent more than fifty years in sustained practice and devotion to the spiritual life. The results of this creative, humble activity are now summarized in this remarkable book, Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit. As Father Keating says, the spiritual journey is a gradual process of enlarging our emotional, mental, and physical relationship with the divine reality that is present in us, but one not ordinarily accessible to our emotions or concepts. The spiritual journey teachesus, first, to believe in the Divine Indwelling within us, fully present and energizing every level of our being; second, to recognize that this energy is benign, healing, and transforming; and third, to enjoy its gradual unfolding step-by-step both in prayer and action.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Manifesting God is about the principles of contemplative prayer - the retreat into the inner room" mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 6:6, where the individual is able to meet God. In the inner room, the silent space in which God unloads the burdens and false selves that govern our individuality and our daily lives, God acts as a divine therapist, healing us and forcing us to recognize how many barriers we put up between ourselves and an authentic relationship with God. The process whereby thishappens is the foundation of centering prayer - a technique of prayer that Keating and other contemporary mystics have revived out of the ancient mystical traditions of the Desert Fathers and the medieval mystics. Abbot Keating explores in this book what it means to enter the inner room and the transformation that takes place there. It explains the guidelines of centering prayer and offers advice on how to develop the relationship more deeply. ".…

Paperback. Condizione: Fair. Wangari Muta Maathai was born in Nyeri, Kenya in 1940. In 1960, she won a Kennedy scholarship to study in America and earned a master's degree in biology from the University of Pittsburgh and became the first woman in East Africa to earn a Ph.D. Returning to Kenya in 1966, Wangari Maathai was shocked at the degradation of the forests and the farmland caused by deforestation. Heavy rains had washed away much of the topsoil, silt was clogging the rivers, and fertilizers were depriving the soil of nutrients. Wangari decided to solve the problem by planting trees. Under the auspices of the National Council of Women of Kenya, of which she was chairwoman from 1981 to 1987, she introduced the idea of planting trees through citizen foresters in 1976, and called this new organization the Green Belt Movement (GBM). She continued to develop GBM into broad-based, grassroots organization whose focus was women's groups planting of trees in order to conserve the environment and improve their quality of life. Through the Green Belt Movement, Wangari Maathai has assisted women in planting more than 20 million trees on their farms and on schools and church compounds in Kenya and all over East Africa. In Africa, as in many parts of the world, women are responsible for meals and collecting firewood. Increasing deforestation has not only meant increasing desertification, but it has also meant that women have had to travel further and further afield in order to collect the firewood. This in turn has led to women spending less time around the home, tending to crops, and looking after their children. By staying closer to home, earning income from sustainably harvesting the fruit and timber from trees, women not only can be more productive, they can provide stability in the home. They can also create time for education opportunities--whether for themselves or their children. This virtuous circle of empowerment through conservation is serving as a model throughout the world, where women both individually and collectively are entrusted with money and material to invest it in ways that make a difference to their daily lives. Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement is a great example of how one person can turn around the lives of thousands, if not millions of others, by empowering others to change their situation. Wangari's road to success was by no means easy. During the 1970s and 1980s, she came under increasing scrutiny from the government of Daniel arap Moi. She was frequently the target of vilification from the government, as well as subject to outright attacks and imprisonment. She refused to compromise her belief that the people were best trusted to look after their natural resources, as opposed to the corrupt cronies of the government, who were given whole swathes of public land, which they then despoiled. In December 2002, Wangari Maathai was elected by an overwhelming margin to Parliament, where she is the Assistant Secretary for Environnment, Wildlife, and Natural Resources in the democratically elected Kibaki government. Even though she is now being protected by the very same soldiers who once arrested her, her voice on behalf of the environment is still strong and determined. In October 2004, she capped a lifetime of incredible achievements when she was awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. In The Green Belt Movement, founder Wangari Maathai tells its story: why it started, how it operates, and where it is going. She includes the philosophy behind it, its challenges and objectives, and the specific steps involved in starting a similar grassroots environmental and social justice organization. The Green Belt Movement is the inspiring story of people working at the grassroots level to improve their environment and their country. Their story offers ideas about a new and hopeful future for Africa and the rest of the world.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. For twenty years, a group of spiritual seekers from many religious traditions met in various places around the United States under the rubric of the Snowmass Conferences to engage in the deepest form of interreligious dialogue. The experience was intimate and trusting, transformative and inspiring. To encourage openness and honesty, no audio or visual recording was made of, and no articles were written about, the encounters. When these encounters came to an end, it was agreed that reflections on what had happened emotionally, spiritually, philosophically, and theologically during the Snowmass dialogues should be written down. The result is The Common Heart. Here is an extraordinary exploration of the wealth of the world's spiritual traditions combined with dialogue from the heart about the differences and similarities between their paths of wisdom. Paperback. Condizione: Good. New Tenth Anniversary EditionWhat is so simple as eating an apple? And yet, what could be more sacred or profound? Food is our most intimate and telling connection both with the natural order and with our cultural heritage. But it is increasingly clear that the choices we make about food today are leading to environmental degradation, enormous human health problems, and unimaginable cruelty toward our fellow creatures. The World Peace Diet presents the outlines of a more empowering understanding of our world, based on comprehending the far-reaching implications of our food choices. Incorporating systems theory, teachings from mythology and religions, and the human sciences, Will Tuttle offers a set of universal principles for all people of conscience, from any religious tradition, that show how we as a species can move our consciousness forward--allowing us to become more free, more intelligent, more loving, and happier in the choices we make. Since it was published in 2005, The World Peace Diet and author Will Tuttle have reached hundreds of thousands of people around the globe and created a whole new movement of people making a conscious connection with a healthful diet and cruelty-free living, and committing spiritually, psychologically, and socially to nonviolence and genuine sustainability. This tenth anniversary edition contains a new foreword, new resources (including recipes), and a study guide.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. In Force Under Pressure, Dr. Lawrence Blum, who has devoted his life's work to the survival and wellness of those who serve, describes the sources of danger, injuries, and victory to police officers in a down-to-earth, readable style. Blum argues that there are missing ingredients in the training and socialization of police officers. These ingredients include techniques and tools to condition the officer's decision-making and concentration during conditions of emergency; internal controls necessary to maintain the will to survive; and aids that will prevent officers being defeated by any threat. Distressing and/or disturbing physical and psychological reactions are common in a police officer's workday, and the officer must be prepared for them. Blum's work has uncovered many of the casues of compromise to officer safety and wellness, and he contends that police officers will be well prepared to cope with unanticipated or rapidly changing encounters if they possess the right tools and the know-how to command and control field encounters and life's pressures. Here Blum provides practical tools for survival in law enforcement, by combining his clinical knowledge with true stories of police officers for an attention-grabbing and informative book.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. An Unchanged Mind begins with a clinical riddle: Why are American teenagers failing to develop normally through adolescence? We are presented with case studies from a therapeutic boarding school for troubled teenagers: All new students had been deemed treatment failures after conventional psychiatric care. All were bright teenagers, full of promise, not obviously ill. Yet they found themselves unprepared for the challenges of modern adolescence and inevitably failed--at school, at home, and among their peers socially. An Unchanged Mind is the discovery of the essence of this problem--disrupted maturation and resulting immaturity. The book explains the problem carefully, with a brief review of normal development and an examination of the delays today's teenagers are suffering: the causes of those delays and how they produce a flawed approach to living. There is a solution. With a sustained push to help troubled kids catch up, symptoms abate, academic and interpersonal functioning improve, and parents pronounce their teens miraculously recovered. This remedy is not a matter of pharmacology--and the cure is not in pills. The remedy is, instead, to grow up.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Amidst the challenges of our times, many of us yearn for transformative healing in our personal lives and in the world. Through a simple, compassionate change in what we eat, we have the power to uplevel our emotional and spiritual well-being, find greater purpose and connection, and heal our planet. Many of us long to create healing and transformation in our lives--to thrive in mind, body, and spirit. We yearn to live authentically, with a deep sense of purpose. We desire vibrant health and vitality that allows us to engage in life fully. And we seek meaning and connection in a world that feels increasingly disconnected. Science shows that a plant-based (vegan) lifestyle can improve our physical health and reverse many common chronic diseases. But what about the impact on emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being? As a psychologist and vegan, Dr. Angela Crawford has been fascinated by that very question. Contrary to the common perception of veganism as restrictive or depriving, her research finds that many vegans describe a sense of abundance and freedom. By honoring our core values and eating more compassionately and healthfully, we can experience greater emotional fulfillment, while protecting animals, humans, and the environment. Through revealing surveys and interviews with vegans, Dr. Crawford discovered seven core transformations that create richer, more meaningful lives. These include: Living aligned with core values Extending compassion to all sentient beings Sense of purpose in creating a kinder, healthier world Connection with others who share similar values Greater emotional fulfillment and well-being Taking charge of health through plant-based nutrition Deepening spirituality and interconnectedness with all life Wherever you are on your own journey--whether you are curious about the benefits of eating more plants or are already vegan and want to experience greater impact and joy--The Vegan Transformation is an invaluable road map. With research findings that illuminate the path to well-being, inspiring stories of transformation, and exercises and meditations that support your journey, this book is a faithful companion in forging your own compassionate, healthy, and purposeful life.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. While some suggest the problems we face today can be solved by updating Christianity or ridding ourselves of religion altogether, The God Who Is Here demonstrates how the rediscovery of the contemplative way can lead to a deeper relationship with God and a vibrant way of worship. This work draws on the rich tradition of Christian mysticism and contemplative prayer (as expressed through the work, most recently, of Fr. Thomas Keating). With deep biblical insight and poetic expression, The God Who Is Here speaks to those longing for spiritual guidance with the promise that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Presbyterian pastor Peter Traben Haas draws on his own life experiences and his personal witness of Christians from across the denominations who are engaged in deep spiritual practice. Haas has constructed a contemplative theology that allows both a more profound connection to the essential truths of Christianity and an expansive vision of faith within the miraculous discoveries of science and cosmology. Passionate, evocative, and deeply committed to the wonders of a daily connection with God, The God Who Is Here is a stirring new contribution to the Christian community by an important new voice in the world of Centering Prayer.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. On September 6, 1989 Norris Chumley was at a crossroads. At 330 pounds and rising, it was simply a matter of time before he would again tip the scales at the 400 pounds he had reached many times before. He had been on virtually every diet, and they'd all failed. He felt hopeless, and, in rare glimpses of honesty, secretly admitted he was slowly committing suicide. The Joy of Weight Loss is the dramatic story of how Norris Chumley turned his life around. It details how Chumley came to accept his conflict about food and body image and finally looked long and hard at his weight fluctuations and diet history. Chumley shares his experiences and secrets of success--of how he discovered joy and lasting happiness, with permanent freedom from obesity. Unlike other weight-loss or diet books, The Joy of Weight Loss is a weight-management book that offers a fresh new solution to everyone's quest for health and happiness. There are no magic pills, no starvation or binge diets. There are no crash courses or deprivations. Chumley instead counsels a sensible diet, taking pleasure in pleasurable movement rather than a punishing exercise regime, and, most importantly of all, learning to surrender yourself to a higher power and discover a true form of self-love that is at once accepting and transforming.…

Paperback. Condizione: Fair. Harvard-educated theologian Gary Kowalski argues that many of the ills of the modern world--from the rise of fundamentalist intolerance to secular society's endless (and empty) search for thrills--stem from the mistaken view that science and faith are antagonists rather than natural allies. Both science and faith, the author suggests, compel us now to move beyond materialism toward an understanding of the world that includes the realities of consciousness and spirit. In the twenty-first century, human beings have less reason than before to feel they hold a privileged or special position in the cosmos, but more cause than ever to feel connected and akin to all that is. Christians and Jews, skeptics and seekers alike will find that this brief, persuasively written volume sheds new light on the old questions, Who are we? Where do we figure in the larger scheme of things? And what can we honestly believe.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. For many parents of troubled teenagers, a therapeutic program that takes the child from the home for a period of time offers some respite from the daily tumult of acting out, lies, and tension that has left the family under siege. However, just as the teenager is embarking on a journey of self-discovery, skill-development, and emotional maturation, so parents too need to use this time to recognize that their own patterns may have contributed to their family's downward spiral. This is The Parallel Process. Using case studies garnered from her many years as an adolescent and family therapist, Krissy Pozatek shows parents of pre-teens, adolescents, and young adults how they can help their children by attuning to emotions, setting limits, not rushing to their rescue, and allowing them to take responsibility for their actions, while recognizing their own patterns of emotional withdrawal, workaholism, and of surrendering their lives and personalities to parenting. As such, The Parallel Process is an essential primer for all parents, whether of troubled teens or not, who are seeking to help the family stay and grow together as they negotiate the potentially difficult teenage years.…
