It also analysed the various factors affecting ability and desire to participate in ROSCAs. Primary data were obtained from six towns. The study adopted stratified random sampling technique in selecting the towns from which the samples were drawn. Data obtained from the respondents using questionnaires were analysed and processed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that highly educated people and that public sector workers participated in ROSCAs contradicting the assertion that only the poor, uneducated and semi-educated people participated in ROSCAs. The study concluded that participation in ROSCAs paid off for the participants and hence increased patronage of diverse groups cutting across levels of education, sex, marital status and age. 112 pp. Englisch.

Bangladesh is lacking the port infrastructure and inland transport facilities to balance with the increasing containerized trade and thus suffering from inefficiency. This is resulting in persistent congestion at the port yard and as a consequence shipping and port costs of Bangladesh are higher than those of some neighboring countries both in terms of price and timing. The study finds that without congestion, road and rail both can save some significant cost of $136/TEU and $38/TEU accordingly. The FOB (Free on Board) of a T-shirt is reduced to $1.266 from $1.28 resulting from the savings, which is very significant for the competitive garment sector. The trucking share of the export and import charge is down to 20% from 36.73% by the improved scenario which is expected to have a strong influence over the competitiveness for the export sector. 100 pp. Englisch.

Its main goal is to describe how the financial crisis influenced the Prague Stock Exchange. Employing stand…ard statistical methods, ARMA, GARCH, and VAR models I examine on daily data the following phenomena: volatility, price jumps, the day of the week effect, validity of the efficient market hypothesis, and information flow between the stocks. The results imply that the financial crisis had stronger impact on the banking sector stocks than on other stocks. The crisis was mainly characterized by rapid growth in volatility and correlation between the stocks. It also influenced the information flow and the day of the week effect. However, the crisis did not trigger growth in the number of extreme price movements, and it did not cause the market to be less information efficient. 60 pp. Englisch.

The study was conducted in Hatcliffe Extension settlement; a low-income community located tw…enty kilometers from the capital, Harare. Two low-income housing projects were assessed with one being supported by a local non-governmental organization Dialogue on Shelter and the other being assisted by the Zimbabwean government s Operation Garikai programme. A qualitative research approach was used and the data was generated through in-depth semi-structured interviews with three participants from either project. The findings from the study provided a wealth of information pertaining to the two low-income housing development approaches that were adopted by the two institutions. Notable aspects of the two approaches that were more prominent in results relate to their participatory nature, capacity-building mechanisms, empowerment benefits, social cohesion and scope for sustainability. Not only income from the off farm activities represents a significant share of the total income of rural households, but also off farm jobs absorb an increasing proportion of the r…ural labor among the rural poor without land. Although Uganda s agricultural sector has tended to receive some policy attentions like National Agricultural Advisory Development Services (NAADS) in rural areas, the rural poor derive their incomes from multiple sources. The data used in this study was from the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) 2005/06. A LOGIT MODEL with the binary outcome being the off farm participation was used. The study concluded by suggesting that the supply and demand sides in the labor market shape off farm employment. Local village conditions and demand factors as well as individual characters from the supply side act as major key aspects in determining individual s decision to participate in off farm activities, typical policies such as improvements in human capital and rural infrastructure could act as important tools for promoting and making the poor benefit from the income opportunities from the off farm sector. 84 pp. Englisch.

The sampling frame constituted 154 and 193 producers of Kalabang and Begnas study sites respecti…vely. For the study, 30 percent of the population that is 47 from Kalabang and 58 from Begnas was selected by using simple random sampling technique. Total of 10 finger millet traders were selected for studying the marketing aspects of finger millet. Household survey was carried out to collect the primary information from the selected finger millet producers and traders by using the pre-tested interview schedules. The mean area allocated by the sampled households to finger millet cultivation and its productivity were declining but the price was increasing over time at both the research sites. Lack of other alternatives was the major reason for cultivating the finger millet in bari lands of the farmers. The mean quantity of finger millet use was higher (147.99 kg/household) in Kalabang than Begnas (86.81 kg/household). The cost of production (NRs. 23847.60/ha) and gross revenue (NRs. 24638.23/ha) were significantly higher at Kalabang than in Begnas. 84 pp. Englisch.
