The purpose of this monograph is to investigate a suitable way to recognize the registration plate from an image of vehicle. An enhancement method for License Plate extraction that overcomes the illumination problem is introduced using YCbCr color model and Wavelet Transform with promising results. The proposed algorithm recognizes the Arabic words and Hindi numbers within the plate area. The focus is on the design of algorithms used for extracting the license plate from a single image, isolating the characters of the plate and identifying the individual characters. The performance of the system has been investigated on real images of about 221 vehicles. 78% of total plates were successfully extracted using the uniform-illumination module and 85% after using non-uniform illumination module. 83% is the success rate for Segmentation step and 72% for recognition. 72 pp. Englisch.

The thesis explores kernel-based statistical methods. Two algorithms ar…e developed for visual tracking that are robust to noise and occlusions. In the first algorithm, a kernel PCA-based eigenspace representation is used. The de-noising and clustering capabilities of the kernel PCA procedure lead to a robust algorithm. In the second method, a robust density comparison framework is developed that is applied to visual tracking, where an object is tracked by minimizing the distance between a model distribution and given candidate distributions. The superior performance of kernel-based algorithms comes at a price of increased storage and computational requirements. A novel method is developed that takes advantage of the universal approximation capabilities of generalized radial basis function neural networks to reduce the computational and storage requirements for kernel-based methods. 116 pp. Englisch.

Hexagonal and FCC Ge2Sb2Te5 electronic and vibrational structures as well as optical properties are computationally calculated implementing the density functional theory, the density functional perturbation theory, the kramers-Kronig transformation and several optical equations. The resulting electronic and vibrational band structure and density of states, as well as the refractive index, the extinction coefficient, the absorption coefficient, the dielectric function, the optical reflection and the optical transmission successfully match similar calculations or experimental data available in the literature. 76 pp. Englisch.

Epilepsy monitoring units measure the electrical activity of the brain using electroencephalography in an attempt to locate the epileptic brain tissue. However since seizures occur unpredictably and are generally infrequent, long recording times generate massive quantities of data. Automating this process using a seizure detection algorithm will ultimately save time and money, allow for superior and safer care of patients, and provide a better diagnostic tool. Although seizure detection has been well studied in the laboratory and clinic, a widely accepted algorithm has not been developed largely due to the fact that automated routines do not perform as well as a neurologist. In order to improve performance, we tested the hypothesis that multiple algorithms would work better than any single approach. Multiple algorithms were used as feature extractors and were implemented into a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. 76 pp. Englisch.

However, although the standard transmitted reference scheme produces low complexity tag receiver structure, it is not energy efficient and the error performance is not as good as a full rake receiver. In this work, two transmitted reference scheme, which are known as transmitted-reference 4 pulse interval amplitude modulation (TR 4PIAM) and its enhanced version TR hybrid 4PIAM, are being studied analytically and verified through simulations. The two schemes improves the energy efficiency of the transmitter while maintains a low complexity as compared to a full rake receiver. This work should be useful to anyone else who may want to understand the analytical performance of the variants of transmitted reference scheme in the application of radio frequency identification. 84 pp. Englisch.

In this work, a stochastic model has been developed for analysis and synthesis of mechanical error in diff…erent Rapid Prototyping (RP) processes. Tolerances and clearances have been assumed to be random variables. The mechanical error has been found for a grid of points on the work surface in the (Fused Deposition) FD and StereoLithography (SL) processes and analyzed. A synthesis procedure has been developed for allocating tolerances and clearances in RP processes. Stringent values of tolerances and clearances reduce the error at the tool tip. However, the cost of manufacturing and assembling such a machine may become prohibitive. The tolerances and clearances are optimally allocated for FD and SL processes so to restrict the mechanical error within the specified limits. The methodology presented here is useful to the researchers performing the analysis and synthesis of mechanical error in RP and other machines as well as for the manufacturers to reduce the cost of manufacturing the machines. 120 pp. Englisch.

The traditional simulation-based solution to this problem is computationally expensive, because of the large variety of…possible circuit behaviors that would need to be simulated; it also has the disadvantage that it requires full knowledge of the details of the circuit attached to the grid, thereby precluding early verication of the grid. We propose a power grid verication technique that can be applied before the complete circuit has been designed and without exact knowledge of the circuit currents. We use current constraints, which are upper bound constraints on the currents that can be drawn from the grid, as a way to capture the uncertainty about the circuit details and activity. We propose one technique where we verify the worst case voltage as an optimization problem. Using this voltage verication and the constraints we also check the worst case delay of critical paths within the design. Lastly we implement a method of partitioning that allows us to verify grids of an industrial size within reasonable simulation times. 104 pp. Englisch.
