Aggiungi al carrellosewn soft cover with flaps. 12.5 x 21 cm. sewn soft cover with flaps. 112 pages. Edited and foreword by Gerry Leonidas. Many typefaces created today are related to types of the past, and interest in older letterforms is stimulated by the great number of visual resources available. We are surrounded by digital fonts based in one way or another on historical models, but it is clear that we cannot consider all of them as revivals. So, how to distinguish a type revival from a typeface that is loosely based on historical forms? More reflection on the subject in necessary, both to help navigate the landscape of contemporary typefaces, and to give greater clarity to discussions on the history of type. A concise publication that will show a practical perspective and fresh content, fueling the conversation among and between designers and scholars. The content is organized into four parts. The authors begin by defining the theoretical ground, including a definition of revivals and a discussion on the boundaries of a revival project. The second part introduces the framework of analysis developed for recording the relevant design features of the type used as a model. In the third part, Olocco and Patané apply the framework to the roman type cut by Francesco Griffo for the De Aetna (1496). Based on this analysis, the fourth part showcases the process of reviving this historical type. Although the authors are focusing on defining a procedure to design a type revival, those suggestions can be adopted beyond the scope of a revival project. Their approach will ensure a strong connection with the original source and a substantial help towards understanding how to employ historical models in a today context.

Aggiungi al carrellosewn hardback. 21 x 26 cm. sewn hardback. 96 pages. The book contains contributions by Chris Lozotte and Jean Dykstra. Kathy Shorr, who grew up in Brooklyn, bought her first car at age 17 and has always loved to drive. The passion dates back to childhood, when still few residents of her neighborhood owned a car. As a girl she was inspired by her grandmother's resourcefulness: the only member of the family to own and drive a car. After graduation Shorr found work as a limousine driver, turning the vehicle into a photographic studio on wheels. For nine months, she captured a wide variety of passengers headed to weddings, final balls, quinceañeras and other celebrations. The sleek interior of the limousine served as a private space, allowing passengers from working-class backgrounds to embrace a temporary celebrity status. Shorr's work thus draws on two distinct genres in the history of photography: the road trip - think Elliot Erwitt's California Kiss - and the studio portrait. Like families who reached a photographer's workshop to capture a special occasion, Limousine's subjects entered the car in their finest clothes to experience a moment of celebration. As Chris Lezotte writes, although often stereotyped as being to weak to handle the 'motorized beast,' women have always defied gender stereotypes to claim the car as a source of autonomy. Shorr's grandmother used her Chevy primarily for family excursions, but also as a means of independence. Shorr, on the other hand, as a photographer and driver, affirmed the automobile to offer herself and her passengers the ride of a lifetime.

Aggiungi al carrellosewn hardback. 22 x 30 cm. sewn hardback. 344 pages. The book contains interviews with the following master calligraphers: Maria Eugénia Roballos, Francesca Baisetton, Christopher Haanes, Carl Rohrs, Ewan Clayton, Thomas Ingmire. Do the Write Thing, Luca Barcellona's second monograph, represents the "travelogue" of a multifaceted artist who has been moving in the world of letters for nearly two decades. Ten years after the bestseller Take Your Pleasure Seriously, Barcellona gives new suggestions through a large selection of new works - commissioned or personal projects - with which he recounts the maturation of his own taste and creative approach. From more traditional calligraphy works to works on large surfaces, passing through graphic design, illustration, engraving and typography, and arriving at recent experiments with letters through VR. Hundreds of calligraphic artwork and lettering for packaging, record covers, labels, murals, and logos, as well as live performances with musicians and collected in the experience of the lettering world; a true school of life, starting from aesthetics to the spiritual path, what seasoned calligraphers know as "the way of writing." This is a more introspective book than its predecessor, reflecting at bottom the practice no longer of a calligrapher but of an artist using calligraphy. In addition to an authoritative opinion on the state of the art of this discipline, corroborated by contributions from some of Barcellona's most internationally important and recognized colleagues of the day, the book offers a new and rewarding visual experience. Its 344 pages bring together more than 500 images in an elegant volume, aimed at calligraphers and calligraphy enthusiasts, designers, communication professionals, teachers and students.
