Paperback. Condizione: New. At the beginning of 1942, more than two years after the start of the Second World War, much of mainland Europe and North Africa was under the control of Nazi Germany. Despite this great damage had been inflicted on German and Italian (Axis) shipping from the island of Malta, a vital British base in the Mediterranean. Malta had suffered massive bombing since June 1940 and was running out of food, fuel and ammunition. By 1942 the siege seemed to be bringing Malta to the verge of surrender, a potentially decisive blow to the British Empire's prestige. In a desperate attempt to save the island a convoy of fourteen merchant ships was dispatched, escorted by the largest naval force protecting any convoy in the war. In the face of constant attack, five of the merchant ships made it to Malta. Their arrival changed the fortunes of the island and the course of the war. On board HMS Rodney, one of the battleships, was a 17-year-old midshipman called Michael MccGwire. This is the account of Operation 'Pedestal' from his Midshipman's Journal.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. As deaths mount during the coronavirus pandemic a retired history teacher reflects on the much greater personal impact of the death of her sister death 12 years before. Looking through the lens of the lockdown, Pam Dearly looks back on her and her sister Pauline's childhood, and how their family was affected by the Canvey Island flood of 1953. When they both settle in Sheffield they begin to lead very different lives, Pauline outgoing and sociable, Pam reserved and insular. After Pauline's death Pam finds herself more involved with her sister's daughter and grandchildren than she had planned. The Great Sheffield Flood of 1864 resonates with her and she uses it for a local history project for her students, but she is not expecting to find herself and her new family affected by floods themselves, or to be the one who has to find a solution to their problems. 'Watershed' is about loneliness and families, and unlooked for deaths. It speaks of how events can change the course of lives, and how, in the end, the smallest of human interactions can make a difference. Susan Day skilfully conveys the many and complex manifestations of grief; how it affects people so differently, how pervasive and long-lasting its reach really is. There are no tidy endings here, no happy ever-afters - just an acceptance that life does and must go on.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. The Enneagram shows us nine key drivers (types) that energise us, which Eric Salmon explained in his first book "The ABC of the Enneagram." Now in this follow-on book Eric explores the three subdivisions of each type - otherwise known as "subtypes." The subtypes show us the most visible part of our type; they help us to become aware of our everyday automatic behaviours. As such, they are the crucial key to helping us get back into contact with our true self, so we can free ourselves from our unconscious habits and more readily accept other peoples. This specialist book on Enneagram Subtypes outlines a new approach to Enneagram studies, which can help your personal development and your professional and personal relationships to flourish. It will help you to operate in the world in a more free and focused way.…
