Octavo, navy blue boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 208 pp. Fine (As New)in a Fine (As New) dust jacket. From dust jacket: Operation Goodwood, the largest tank battle involving British armour ever to have taken place, has been a perpetual subject of controversy. As a former senior army officer and highly experienced Normandy battlefield guide, Christopher Dunphie is ideally qualified to analyse the background, aims, actions and consequences of this ambitious undertaking. During his detailed research he has not only unearthed the relevant records and walked the ground but has tracked down and interviewed numerous veterans of the battle from both sides. Through these varying perspectives, The Pendulum of Battle addresses such fascinating issues as whether the Operation really was intended as a breakout; to what extent did it lead to a crisis of confidence in Montgomery's leadership; was it, indeed, a success or failure? Military History, European History, World War II, British History, British Military.

Royal octavo, blue boards (hardcover), gilt letters, [125] pp. Near-Fine, with bookplate; in Fine dust jacket. Heavily illustrated in full color. From dust jacket: In the summer of 1940, with the rest of Europe already conquered, Hitler's armies prepared to invade England. There seemed little to stop them. Britain stood alone, her armies driven from the beaches at Dunkirk. All that remained was for Hermann Goring's invincible Luftwaffe to sweep the pitiable remnants of the RAF from the sky, and the invasion could begin. That invasion never took place. Goring's Luftwaffe was confronted and ultimately defeated by a handful of British and Allied pilots -- a tiny Band of Brothers to be known forever as "The Few". For fifty years theirs has been a story that has inspired all those who honour courage, selflessness and duty. Now this specially commissioned 50th Anniversary tribute brings to life England's finest hour -- and one of history's finest moments. Aviation, Battle of Britain, Military History, World War II, Second World War, WWII, British History. yslic.

From Preface: Florida At War is an effort to analyze the impact a catastrophic event, World War II, had on the development of modern Florida. It is also an effort to convey to two generations of Floridians the significance of the contributions made by an earlier generation of Americans to this entity we know today as "The Sunshine State." It is also an attempt to provide a foundation of knowledge for younger generations who will eventually seek to understand the whys and whos of their own existence. Finally, it is also an effort to look at the totality of the war experience on the American people. Although Florida is the focal point of these essays, the vents, experiences, and actions of Floridians during this period of national emergency can be applied to citizens of all the United States. Unlike any previous war and certainly unlike the wars that were fought later, World War I was a shared experience, replete with common efforts and sacrifices by all Americans. From 1941 until 1945, Americans from all walks of lie, of all races, and of both sexes worked together in a united front to defeat the forces of militarism and racism. Americans had never been involved in a fight with more clearly delineated objectives of with a higher moral purpose. Even those Americans who had preached isolation during the 1920s and 1930s quickly joined the war effort and worked shoulder to shoulder with their fellow citizens to eliminate Hitler, Mussolini and the Japanese warlords. For Floridians, World War II proved to be the single most important event in the state's long history. As such, it deserves to be commemorated.
