Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. TV producer Jimmy Fyffe starts taking anabolic steroids to restore the 'manliness' he has lost in a disastrous career and unhappy marriage. His plan works - a little too well. Soon he is a cocaine dealer, carving out a market in Dublins more affluent suburbs. This draws him into conflict with tw…o established drugs gangs. He is kidnapped, beaten and terrorized, and is linked to the killing of a drugs-lord and two Gardai. Testosterone, Dublin 8 describes the effect of the 'male hormone' on an individual, and the wider society, told against the backdrop of a gentrifying Dublin. It is a moral tale wrapped in a classic thriller that gets to the heart - and veins - of modern Ireland. Is Jimmy next to die, or will the same newfound machismo that landed him in trouble also help him escape it? Things get worse before they get better; ultimately, the answer is found in an ayahuasca ceremony in the Wicklow mountains. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Leading figures from the worlds of politics, entertainment, religion and the arts contribute their recollections of - and reflections on - the papal visit in September 1979. Many of those who were personally or professionally involved in the visit offer their impressions of those unforgettable t…hree days. The Pope's visit to Ireland in September 1979 attracted more excitement and interest than any concert or sporting event ever before - or since. Nearly everybody it seems, believer and non-believer alike, recalls what truly was a national event. More than a million people turned out to greet John Paul II at Phoenix Park, in the largest single gathering of people in Europe in modern times. Tens of thousands of young people heard him say the famous words "Young people of Ireland, I love you" at the Youth Mass in Galway, and large crowds gathered when the Pope visited Drogheda, Clonmacnoise, Maynooth, Knock and Limerick. In fact, the visit could be said to mark a high-point in the history of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Who would have, or could have, predicted the changes in Irish society and in the position of the majority church that the intervening decades would bring? 3 Days In September is a handsome hardback collection of people's memories of the visit accompanied by (over a hundred) both color and black and white photographs from the various gatherings and venues the Pope attended. The book features an introduction by well-known cultural commentator Mary Kenny. The contributions range from the polemical (Frank McGuinness) to the personal (the flower girl Liz Jackson, now in her thirties), from the nostalgic (Maeve Binchy) to new interpretations (Tim Pat Coogan). The book is sure, given the Pope's passing, to generate interest and perhaps controversy - as well as take us back to what, it seemed at the time, were more innocent days. The royalties from the book go to the Simon Community of Ireland. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. RTE correspondent Richard Crowley's examination on the tremendously divisive Israeli - Palestine question and the prospect for its peaceful resolution - casting an analytical eye on the disastrous implications for the greater Middle East should it remain unresolved. The creation of a Jewish stat…e in the Holy Lands after World War II and the forcible displacement of the Palestinian people has had long-term violent consequences for all parties in the region - the repercussions of which has influenced much of the terrorist activity directed against Western countries in the past several years. No Man's Land draws on Richard Crowley's extensive experience as RTE correspondent in the region since 2003 - here he interviews people in the homes and political offices of Palestine and Israel, reflecting the full gamut of opinions and involvement on both sides of this most complex and very human conflict. From Irish Jews who have emigrated to Israel and moved into the contentious settlements, to Palestinians who lived in Ireland as well as high profile protagonists from both sides; the book poses the almost impossible question to the residents themselves, of how to solve this long standing dispute for land and the Holy City of Jerusalem - and seeks to imagine the realities of a future there without peace, of the sustainability of existing in the toxic mire of an escalating conflict with no end in sight. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In From the Press Box, Peter Byrne gives the reader a ringside seat to the key sporting clashes of the past seventy years, beginning with the Republic of Ireland's historic match against England at Dalymount Park in 1948 (which was followed by a state reception for the England team, hosted…by Taoiseach Eamon de Valera) and ending with the crowning of Kilkenny as All-Ireland hurling champions in 2012. Byrne writes superbly on all of Ireland's sporting heroes of recent times, including greats such as Ronnie Delaney, Roy Keane and Brian O'Driscoll. All the major sports are covered, from Gaelic football, hurling and soccer to athletics, rugby and cricket. Relive the high points of Ireland's sporting history in the presence of one of this country's master sportswriters, a forty-year veteran of the Irish Times who was also a regular contributor to the Daily Telegraph and the News of the World. From the Press Box features a foreword by legendary distance runner Sonia O'Sullivan. In recalling seventy years of sports journalism, Peter Byrne has produced an engaging collection of sports essays and anecdotes covering eight different sports and highlighting the many moments and sportspeople associated with them. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Michael Murphy's second volume of reflections deals with the fact that life goes on and details the progression of those we met in the first book, including himself. His writing is powerful and engaging and takes an unflinching look at difficult subjects, particularly the lingering and distressi…ng physical effects that prostate cancer had on his body, and the confusion of guilt and pain accompanying his decision to place his mother into a nursing home. The book touches on many important people in Murphy's life and compassionately and courageously discusses the passing of his friends, Steve McDonogh (Michaels previous publisher) and Aengus Fanning (former Editor of the Sunday Independent). The book finishes strongly with an account of the civil partnership of Terry and Michael. The genuine affection between the couple and their obvious joy on the day of their Civil Partnership ceremony shines through and offers a very personal perspective on the historic changes taking place regarding gay rights in Ireland. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The trial and conviction of Catherine Nevin for her role in the murder of her husband Tom monopolized the attention of the country for weeks. It was the main topic of conversation in pubs, homes and workplaces as newspapers daily carried new and salacious details of the "Black Widow's" scheming,… as well as images of her glamorous and expansive wardrobe, on their front pages. In the days before murders became a daily occurrence in Ireland, the allegations of contract killers, extramarital affairs, fraud and involvement with Republican organizations seemed better suited to the big screen than a small town pub. Pat Flynn led the investigation against Catherine, a woman whom he had encountered several times before these events unfolded. He had witnessed her fabricate accusations of sexual abuse against his Garda colleagues while she continued to enthrall his superior officers and Judge O'Buachalla. He describes how holes in her version of the events on the night of the murder were found, along with evidence of how she had been plotting for years to have her husband murdered. Flynn also reported Judge O'Buachalla for granting Catherine the license for the pub solely in her name through irregular channels, after she had been charged with murder and as rumors of an affair between them had become rife. Although O'Buachalla was discussed in the Dail and a judicial investigation ordered, the results were never publicized, despite promises to the contrary from the then Minister for Justice, and the judge continued to sit in court. For a man who spent his working life enforcing the law, this could not be allowed to pass without at least an official explanation. Catherine and Friends presents the complete truth behind the infamous "Black Widow" and how ultimately, no amount of scheming thwarted Pat Flynn's search for answers. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. It's June 1941. Paul Duggan, a young Irish military intelligence officer, is on a secret mission to Portugal to uncover German intentions towards neutral Ireland and, even more secretly, to find out who had informed the Americans of an Irish Minister's undiplomatic comments while in Lisbon…on his way to Washington to plead for arms. Meanwhile, an unmarked American plane crashes in Ireland and its cargo of beer, cigarettes and caviare make their way into the local black market with unforeseen consequences. Then it turns out there was something more than booze on board a piece of secret military hardware of great interest to the Germans. Duggan and his colleagues find themselves in a complex game of diplomacy and disinformation as politicians in Ireland and America fall out and the spy agencies of Germany, Britain and the United States manoeuvre for political and military advantage. With the help of his Special Branch friend, Peter Gifford, he tries to unravel the plots and avoid the pitfalls. To do so he has to return to Lisbon, the war's spy centre, where the interlocking intrigues threaten the future of Ireland's relations with America, put its neutrality at risk, and finally threaten his own life and that of the woman he loves." This fast-paced and gripping novel is politically/historically/factually accurate and details the political, military and human aspects of conflict in 1940s Ireland. Paperback. Condizione: New. While Ireland (like much of the rest of the world) was in lockdown in Spring and Summer 2020, we scratched our heads and wondered what to do to help lift people's spirits. We decided to join forces with Irish Pensions and Finance and run a competition celebrating Irish people's love of a good story -…and a good laugh. There were only two requirements: make it funny, and make it (fairly) short. We were overwhelmed by the response: we received hundreds of entries, from all over the island and points beyond, by people from all walks of life. There were only three winners - but we decided to gather the best stories into a book. And here they are - from the sublime to the ridiculous. Think Graham Norton's Big Red Chair to Samuel Beckett's dark humor - and all points in between. The result is: Brevity is the Soul: Wit from Locked-Down Ireland.
