Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This Reader, published as part of the Litwin Books Critical Book, Publishing, and Literacy Studies series, brings the study of print and literacies culture (and its ancillary topics) into critical conversation with a variety theoretical discourses, so that we can better understand their roles as normalizing agents in the unequal distribution of social, cultural, and epistemic power. From rampant systemic racism, political unrest, the rise of nationalist ideologies, the increasing exploitation from capitalist and neoliberal structures, and widespread environmental catastrophe, print culture has a role to play in both how social problems sustain themselves, as well as how we might, potentially, find ways to reimagine new social formulations and cultural imaginations to counteract this effects. The aim of this collection is to think beyond geographic boundaries, and to formulate how print culture scholars, educators, and professionals, can decenter the epistemic frames common in the scholarship of print, visual, and literacy cultures, that perpetuate, overlook, or ignore these power relations.Sean Pessin is a writer, editor, and educator whose work bridges creative writing, digital humanities, and sustainability studies. He teaches at California State University, Northridge, where his courses invite students to engage critically and creatively with literature, games, and multimodal storytelling. He mentors students in publishing through The Northridge Review, the university's long-running literary magazine. His pedagogy emphasizes writing as both an art form and a social act. Beyond the classroom, Pessin develops innovative digital projects that explore the intersections of narrative, technology, and community. His scholarship and teaching often foreground sustainability and ethical inquiry, guiding students to consider the material and social dimensions of creativity-whether through supply-chain mapping assignments, diagramming the fields of various forms of literary production, or environmental case studies. As an editor and advocate for small press publishing, Pessin champions process-oriented approaches that highlight the collective labor behind literary production. He is committed to supporting emerging voices, fostering inclusive workshop practices, and cultivating spaces where writing and publishing become vehicles for discovery, dialogue, and social engagement. Whether in print, digital form, or the classroom, his work reflects a dedication to craft, community, and the imaginative possibilities of language in shaping more connected and sustainable futures.Robert D. Montoya is the Martin and Bernard Breslauer Endowed Professor in Bibliography; Chair and Associate Professor in the UCLA Department of Information Studies; Director of UCLA California Rare Book School, and Director of the UCLA Library, Ethics, and Justice Lab. Montoya's research trajectory focuses on special collections and rare books; book history; knowledge organization; international library development and publishing; information representation and positionality; and critical, ethical, and justice-oriented LIS work. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Intensified erasure of Palestinians-through genocide and censorship-increases the need for librarians to protect and provide access to resources that support critical thinking and aid in distinguishing constructive truth from racist or politically motivated fiction. But what happens when libraries become the focus of politicized attempts to control information about Palestinians? How can librarians fulfill their professional and ethical obligation to defend intellectual freedom in the face of threats to their reputations, their jobs, and even their physical safety? The diverse pieces in this anthology explore research and experiences at the intersection of Palestine and libraries. Part one examines how Palestinian librarians, archivists, and individuals resist erasure by preserving Palestinian materials and narratives and by ensuring Palestinians' access to library resources amidst recurring cycles of destruction and confiscation. Part two explores how librarians in the United States respond to pressure from right-wing and pro-Israel advocacy groups that are quick to label any effort to include Palestinians and their histories as antisemitic.About the editorsNora Lester Murad is an educator, activist, and author of the award-winning young adult novel, Ida in the Middle, among other books about Palestine. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book is a personal account of our experiences with Magnolia Cartonera, our handcrafted, in-home, and independent publishing house. Since 2014, we've been writing, publishing, and crafting cartonero books, which are books with handcrafted carboard covers, as well as zines, which are small self-published magazines made entirely by hand and independently. When we say handcrafted, we mean that our books are made from cardboard boxes we collected ourselves. We repurpose, paint, sew, and bind the cardboard by hand, and the only machine used during the entire process is a home printer. That means we work with paint, thread and needles, cutting tools, scissors, and our home printer. It also means that the production process relies entirely on manual labor, so that every time we create a new copy, a new story begins.Aside from sharing our experiences, our goal is to offer practical information and helpful ideas to solidify your desire to publish cartonero books with covers made by hand. We want to encourage and support people who are thinking of going into independent self-publishing, but who haven't found any literature to help them understand the process of handcrafting a cartonera. We understand that part of our work as independent artists is to share information about our own practices of writing, publication, and graphic arts at Magnolia Cartonera so more people are able to access it. This book is our attempt to help anyone who wants to establish themself as an artist or writer create their own cartonera books and publishing houses.Although lots of people know about cartonero books in our communities, we've noticed that the simple techniques of hand binding carboard boxes to make them into book covers remain largely unknown.Through this text, we hope you learn Magnolia Cartonera's techniques for manufacturing books and that you feel encouraged to write and to publish. We wrote this book for people who want to cultivate and solidify their own autonomy over their creative efforts. We'll show you how we got our start and how we carry out our daily cartonera activities to inspire you to do the same.- Daniele and Juliano This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Archival pedagogy - the teaching of archival knowledge and skills - is practiced worldwide but remains under-examined in the scholarly and professional literature of archival studies. What might we learn about, and how might we deepen our practice in archival pedagogy if there was more international exchange on the topic? That question drove the compilation of Archival Pedagogies, a new edited collection that brings together some of the leading archival educators from across the globe, with an equally international editorial team and editorial board, to explore the frameworks, methods, contents and challenges of teaching recordkeepers and records users. This book gathers authors from various countries, most of whom present local, context-specific perspectives on the subject, describing the archival-pedagogical landscape they are most familiar with. This approach enables readers to gain insight into different challenges and methods in archival education. Such an understanding can inspire reflection on local strategies and programs of study, potentially leading to widened understandings of other professional contexts, new thinking about the curriculum and its delivery, and the mutual exchange of instructional practices. Just as it benefits practice, for instance in technical innovation, standards setting, and cultural diplomacy, cross-cultural exchange has benefits for archival education: such exchange could help shape future pedagogies that prepare students for local specificities within a globalised world. The EditorsMagdalena Wisniewska-Drewniak is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of History at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland.James Lowry is a Professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, Queens College, City University of New York. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Emergent Strategy in Library Instruction: Stories, Reflections, and Imaginings brings together a rich collection of voices that illustrate how library instruction can be enhanced through the use of emergent strategy, pioneered by adrienne maree brown in her books Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and Holding Change: The Way of Emergent Strategy Facilitation and Mediation. Emergent strategy is a feminist, afrofuturist exploration of human relationships to each other and nature, responses to change, and our capacity to dream for and enact more just and beautiful futures; its use in libraries has the capacity to help librarians, students, and collaborators teach and learn in authentic, meaningful, and impactful learning communities, even when they're together for only brief amounts of time. This collection of experiences from a diverse group of librarians sheds light on the benefits, challenges, and joys of embracing an emergent teaching practice in library instruction. By reading about the lived experiences of library colleagues, readers will find practical ways to incorporate the nine emergent principles in their own teaching, and quite possibly discover the ways in which emergent strategy concepts are already at work in their classrooms and teaching practices. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Information, Power, and Reproductive Health encourages readers to explore the inextricable intersection of reproductive health information and power. Rooted in a framework of reproductive justice, it explores the ways in which power plays a central role in how reproductive health information is created, controlled, withheld, and shared. Deeply entrenched ideologies about which bodies are deserving or undeserving of reproductive care, which facets of reproductive life are worthy of research, which issues are taboo or frequently dismissed, and how to control bodies considered unruly all affect what health information is easily accessible or perhaps hidden from those who need it. Legislative, bureaucratic, medical-scientific, economic, and familial systems and structures shape reproductive health information, and framing information production and consumption as a social act can help us to trace these structural and ideological forces in the reproductive health landscape and locate transgressive sites of information sharing that speak back to power. Chapters address the continued and more-urgent-than-ever interest in reproductive health, feminism(s), womanism, critical theory, and praxis in librarianship and information studies.Gina Schlesselman-Tarango (she/her) is Associate Professor and Science Librarian at Grinnell College. She is an interdisciplinary scholar and educator who writes about critical information literacy in academic libraries and the gender and racial dynamics at play in information work more broadly. Alanna Aiko Moore is the Librarian for Sociology, Ethnic Studies, and Critical Gender Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Alanna holds a bachelor of arts in Sociology/Anthropology and Gender Studies from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR, and a master's of Library and Information Science from Dominican University. Alanna has published book chapters and articles on queer parenting, cross cultural mentoring, emotional labor, activism, and issues affecting women of color librarians. Renee A. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. What is slow librarianship? Julia Glassman first brought up the term slow librarianship in the 2017 article, "The Innovation Fetish and Slow Librarianship: What Librarians Can Learn from the Juicero." Since then, Meredith Farkas has defined slow librarianship as "an antiracist, responsive, and values-driven practice that stands in opposition to neoliberal values. Workers in slow libraries are focused on relationship-building, deeply understanding and meeting patron needs, and providing equitable services to their communities." Slow Librarianship: Reflections and Practices is an edited book that compiles chapters from librarians working in many different libraries throughout the United States, Canada, and Italy. The authors describe what slow librarianship means to them in their work and roles while sharing concrete practices and ways to enact the tenets of slow librarianship in your work.
