Vol. 1 of 6 From the flap: "Polybius (born ca. 208 BCE) of Megalopolis in the Peloponnese (Morea), served the Achaean League in arms and diplomacy for many years, favouring alliance with Rome. From 168 to 151 he was hostage in Rome where he became a friend of Aemilius Paulus and his two sons, and especially adopted Scipio Aemilianus whose campaigns he attended later. In late life he was trusted mediator between Greece and the Romans whom he admired; helped in the discussions which preceded the final war with Carthage; and, after 146, was entrusted by the Romans with details of administration in Greece. He died at the age of 82 after a fall from his horse." In early manhood an admirer of Socrates, he later founded the famous school of philosophy in the grove Academus. Much else recorded of his life is uncertain; that he left Athens for a time after Socrates' execution is probable; that later he went to Cyrene, Egypt, & Sicily is possible; that he was wealthy is likely; that he was critical of 'advanced' democracy is obvious. He lived to be 80 years old. Linguistic tests including those of computer science still try to establish the order of his extant philosophical dialogs, written in splendid prose & revealing Socrates' mind fused w/ Plato's thought. In "Laches", "Charmides", & "Lysis", Socrates & others discuss separate ethical conceptions. "Protagoras", "Ion", & "Meno" discuss whether righteousness can be taught. In "Gorgias", Socrates is estranged from his city's thought, & his fate is impending. The "Apology" (not a dialogue), "Crito", "Euthyphro" & the unforgettable "Phaedo" relate the trial & death of Socrates & propound the immortality of the soul. In the famous "Symposium" & "Phaedrus", written when Socrates was still alive, we find the origin & meaning of love. "Cratylus" discusses the nature of language. The great masterpiece in 10 books, the "Republic", concerns righteousness (& involves education, equality of the sexes, the structure of society, & abolition of slavery). Of the 6 so-called dialectical dialogues "Euthydemus" deals w/ philosophy; metaphysical "Parmenides" is about general concepts & absolute being; "Theaetetus" reasons about the theory of knowledge. Of its sequels, "Sophist" deals w/ not-being; "Politicus" w/ good & bad statesmanship & governments; "Philebus" w/ what is good. The "Timaeus" seeks the origin of the visible universe out of abstract geometrical elements. The unfinished "Critias" treats of lost Atlantis. Unfinished also is Plato's last work of the 12 books of "Laws" (Socrates is absent from it), a critical discussion of principles of law which Plato thought the Greeks might accept. Of a dozen other extant dialogs & also some letters a few may be genuine. Six other extant dialogs have been rejected as spurious since ancient times. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Plato is in twelve volumes. * The LOEB CLASSICAL LIBRARY is the only existing series of books, which, through original text & facing English translations, gives access to all that is important in Greek & Latin literature. * SHIPPING: We carefully wrap, label & custom-package this Excellent Loeb Classic for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL w/ rates for expedited domestic delivery & international shipment available upon request.

Hard Cover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. First Edition. Later Printing. Publisher's full green cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt medallion on cover. English translation by W. R. Paton. Text in Greek and English. Polybius (c.200 c.118 BC) was a Greek historian of the Hellenistic Period noted for his work, The Histories, which covered the period of 264146 BC in detail. The work describes the rise of the Roman Republic to the status of dominance in the ancient Mediterranean world and included his eyewitness account of the Sack of Carthage in 146 BC. Polybius is also renowned for his ideas concerning the separation of powers in government, later used in Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws and in the drafting of the United States Constitution. Polybius's theme is how and why the Romans spread their power as they did. The work is a vital achievement despite the incomplete survival of all but the first five of forty books. . Both the volume and the unclipped dust jacket are in perfect, unmarked condition. AS NEW/AS NEW. Loeb Classical Library Series. Vol. 160. 16mo 6" - 7" tall. (vi), 536 pp.
